way before nosler officaly brought 280ai , it was a wildcat cartage. we had to fire form the brass from 7mm express, or later 280 rem. to make 280ai brass. Parker ackley built me a 280ai barreled action and custom dies. I carved out a French walnut plank, and inletted the action, and glass bedded the beautiful FN supreme action that Parker ackley chambered in 280ai. the rifle was a pleasure to shoot and extremely accurate. took many head of game with that rifle. when I came back from Viet nam some one stole that rifle, it's still on stolen list. I replaced it with one of the first Kimber rifles in 280ai nice rifle, but not an original custom Parker ackley rifle! life it good!
Coolest long action standard cartridge out there - and in a cool rifle, too. The 280 AI deserves to be one of the most popular cartridges out there, because it will essentially accomplish anything the 7 Rem Mag will but more efficiently and with less recoil.
No kidding 😂 my wife loves i have a gun hobby instead of being at the bars and I still get her honey do's done! I can have as many as I want lol but also have to spend my own money 😂
I remember walking into the original Weatherby store as a young lad in the late 60's in Southgate, CA. I never owned a Weatherby but that place was cool. It was right down the road from where we rode our dirt bikes.
Little crow works proved it. I personally shoot a 195 in my 7 mag over 3000fps. A 280 ai can’t come close to a proper loaded 7 mag. I would own a 280 AI though before I touched a 7 PRC.
@@JD.307 195 is what I did. They don’t use Berger’s. 26” barrel and super slow powder. The point is made with little crow works is comparing all the same barrel length and saami chambers with 8 twist barrels. 7 mag beats 280 AI by a lot. That said 280 AI is a great cartridge and ticks the box for 600 yard hunting.
Excellent choice, Adam. Fantastic chambering. Undoubtedly, you've got lots of virgin Norma 280 brass to load up. The things you do for us never ceases to amaze. Thanks WTW!
Remington brought out the 7mm express Remington many years ago which was the 30-06 necked to 7mm. I think it was to compete with Winchester's 270 cartridge. It didnt sell well so they renamed it the 280 Remington. The 280 AI like you said is the 280 Remington that has an improved case. There's a whole family of Ackley improved cartridges. Did you know that the .277 diameter bullet for the 270 winchester is a more true 7mm than the .284 diameter bullet is. One 7mm I had you don't see anymore is the 7mm stw or shooting times Westerner . I would get awesome velocities from just a 24 inch barrel. A simple rechambering of a 7mm rem mag rifle was all it took to have a rifle in it. The 7mm stw was just an 8mm rem mag necked to 7mm. There's a cartridge to check out, the 8mm rem mag. My uncle used one all the time. Thanks for the video.😊 Enjoy the channel.😊
The 280AI is an excellent old cartridge with performance that (with proper handloads) puts it nipping at the heals of the 7mm Mag with less recoil + it tends to be very accurate. When this cartridge its combined with a fast twist rate and a long throat (& mag well to accommodate the long loaded round) it will shoot the longer 175gr + bullets and the very long ELD bullets exceptionally well at very long range
Finished my 280ai build late last year… the best and most efficient cartridge out there I believe. I’ve worked up several .25 MOA or less with loads from 140 and 160 Accubonds and partitions to as well as Hammer HHT’s. Settled on 2, yes 2, load that’s holding .25 MOA groups out to 300 yards so far with the 153 AND the 162 Hammer HHT over H4350 at 3005 and 3009fps respectfully. I could push them harder but with the groups holding together, the ES and SD numbers in single digits I don’t see a need. It will also shoot Nosler factory accubonds and the Hornady 162 ELDx factory stuff well under a minute! I’ve also heard that several ammo manufacturers are bringing back more loads in the 280ai due to demand!
Love my 280 ackley I bought the weatherby 307 range xp in the 280 AI I’ve been researching the cartridge for years and finally got one and have loved it since. Thanks for the video man keep up the good work God bless
280ai is my all time favorite. I was using it long before it was a standard cartridge. I find it shines with the 140 bullet. Hits like a 7 mag recoils like a 270.
I have both the 280AI and 7prc. Both like the brand new Barnes factory loads. 280AI 22” barrel with the new 152gr lrx gives 2945fps. The 22” barrel 7prc with the new Barnes factory 160lrx runs 2977fps. The 7 PRC gives a little more reach and punch with 0.608 bc on that new 160lrx. It takes another 10gr of powder and quite a bit more recoil to get that added velocity. That 280AI is so efficient! 280 AI performed fantastic on a couple of black bears as did the the 7PRC on this year’s bear. One shot kills with both guns. Debating which to take on my elk hunt next week. So many good choices to pick from! 🤔
280AI is what I guess when you showed it I built one last winter using a old 721 Remington model B meaning it had a fancy checker stock from the factory I built it using a Shilens barrel 26 inch 1-8 twist
Good choice everyone who has a 280AI loves it great long range slinger and hits like 7mm mag less powder close ballistic what's not to like good luck think you will luv it
The .280 Rem. was once known as 7mm Express by Remington. They changed the name because bozos years ago were putting them in the 7mm Rem. Mag. and having "oopsies". Then the .280 A.I. came to be nips at the heels of the 7mm Rem. Mag., thus more efficient. Then you have the .30-06 A.I. which nips the heels of the .300 Win. Mag., etc. etc. .
Yeah Jim on backfire was raving about this cartridge for a long time . Just it being a little bit older cartridge watch your twist rates as it will not stabilize some of the newer longer boolights brother.. kind of like how I learned the hard way running the new bullets on an old 22-250... Too slow😢.. that's what's awesome about all the newer calibers.. better twist rates to stabilize our newer bullets..
This was a really fun video . 😂 I have looked at this one ( caliber) for a while and thought it was probably the ultimate hunting/ shooting round only drawback is bullet availability. I still love the fact it is easier on the recoil end . Great video can’t wait to see more . Thanks Adam
That is going to be a Sweat Heart of a Rifle. 280 A.I. is what I want for my youngest son. I have hunted with a 280 Remington in a Mauser 98k action she was the very 1st Rifle as an adult I purchased.
Nice round and really nice rifle. Because of ammo availability while on a trip would make me lean more toward the 280 or 7mm Mag. If I were a reloaded I would try the AI. I hope it shoots awesome for you.
280 Remington used to be called the 7mm express, a caliber that's been around for a while. It never became popular till they changed the name to 280 rem. Then somebody had to "improve" that! The 280 AI is a great round, derived from the 30-06 case.
That almost looks like a john lazaroni rifle. He made some super hot, fast , flat shooters about 30 years ago. His rifles were the first that I seen with the twisted fluting. 😊
It’s basically a 7 rem mag and it makes people who hate belts happy, nothing wrong with it I just went 7 rem mag for availability of factory ammunition offerings for a rifle I use for most of my hunting that requires traveling. My 7rem mag is the vanguard meat eaters edition Edit, certainly heard of it before, Mr Spomer is a big fan lol
I've always wanted to play with a .22 Jet for some reason. It was pretty cool in it's day. The rounds were also $0.25 each in 1960, so unfortunately they will probably be $25 each now. Might just be a .357 case with a full taper though, I'm not sure.
What You will discover is Nosler Loading Data and max speeds accomplished is extremely different than any other manuals that are more in line with reality. I've loaded and taken alot of game with the 7mm Remington Magnum and also the 280 Nosler AI and for anyone to say they can make a 7 mag out of the 280 AI Sammi approved version is seriously disillusioned from my experience with both cartridges. At best the 280 AI is about the same step down from the 7 mag as the 7-08 is to the 280 AI , 280 Nosler AI 7mm Remington Magnum it's not. Beautiful cartridge though and has other benefits besides velocity.
You are getting all of these old ball cartridge's now you can reload for them. This 280 is really cool Good luck with it. I will be expecting some 1/2 MOA groups with it haha
Well it never fails.. you always have something I want to have!! 🤦🏻😂 my wife is going to ban me from watching your videos before long.. 😂 Thanks who-tee!! 👍🏻
Man, you love all those big and fast cartridges...........so find a 700 in 8mm Rem Mag.....or it's necked down brother the 7mmSTW. A few big boys I can remember from back in the day.
I have a 280AI that I built last winter but I have a 7 mm STW for a long time it uses a 8 mm mag case neck down to 7 mm bullets they were popular in the 1990’s
Nice round for a handloader. I wouldn't touch such an obscure cartridge just for cost and availability reasons. How quickly folks forget what can happen.
anxiously awaiting the 'mossenberg' patriot 308 results!!!!!! AND would you not surprise EVERYONE if you start out a new video with, "Ya know, I have always read about this cartridge, how scandinavians Love this cartridge, even for their moose, started out as a military cartridge wayyyy back in 1894 but it is still going strong. The reloading data for this cartridge starts at 85 grain bullets to 160 grain bullets". " So , thanks to a subscriber named ed 'swedeshooter' I acquired a 6.5x55 rifle, " " Folks call this the first '6.5 creedmoor' but in a standard action. " I found ammunition for this cartridge is actually cheaper than the 6.5 Creedmoor but you get about the same performance" just sayin!
I've never shot 280 AI, but I went from "say what? Ackley you say?" about 5 years ago to really digging it. The Weatherby offerings and AI offerings are what America is all about. Why'd you make that cartridge? It does about the same thing as this and that. I don't know. I was just thankin'; be cool if I did.
Great point. And I'm sure many hunters are glad it's out there. Myself? 😅😅.My head is still spinning from the number of hunting cartridges. Let alone the number of 6. this and 6. that. 🤔🤔
How many rifles do you own? Every time I open YT, you've bought another! Haha. Because I reload, it makes my wallet hurt whenever I think of a new cartridge.
Been shooting a 280 rem Ruger since 1983....deadly round. AI has a litle more so it is a winner in my book. I went with the 280 rem over the 7mm mag because it was lighter and kicks less. Ackley just made it a little better for the longer range stuff. Great round. 280 rem still ain't no whimp and deserves more accolades than it has received.
My brother was a 300WM guy forever. He bought a Savage in 280AI because it was on sale. He hunted with it last year. He is done with the 300WM. 280AI is a fine round. Anything tracing its lineage back to the 30-06 case is going to be a winner. With that 140gr bullet you will easily get 3000fps or more. Do not sell it short. It is a fantastic cartridge. It may a cartridge you want to handload. Not sure how available ammo will be.
I haven't had the means to buy any new bang bangs in many years! I'm a disabled veteran with a family of four and my Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation barely keeps food in the house and gas in the truck! God bless y'all!!
Such a classic cartridge. A friend I was hunting with dropped a huge sambar stag with a 280AI. It’s pretty much a handloader’s proposition but such an under rated cartridge. Thanks for sharing Hooty. 👍
I own one and handloading got 7mm rem mag speeds, but without the 7mm recoil. It is an awesome long range elk cartridge. You will love it. You really have to be a handloader to get the best from it.
@@usafret4709 factory has to stick to 58,000 since you can have 3k of spike due to wide tolerances on headspace of the shoulder. If you fully form your case to the shoulder and bump it back .002-.003 then you can run 65,000 and not have a random 3k spike. No reloading manual will show you this for a 7 mag. And a max chamber is preferred since you gain most of the powder space. My cases are 88 grains of water. 195 though is where you start gaining most of the efficiency of the 7 mag.
I messed around and made an 8mm-06 a few years ago because l like weird things. Don't like shooting things other people have. l took a 98 action went to town on it. Still fixing up a load. I'm getting there but it's picky for sure.
@@Buddha-of8fk my 338-06 is on a mark 10 action and my 280 is a mountain rifle by Remington and I had a model 4 in 7mm rem express that was a 280 rem just renamed all were stolen about twenty years ago now
@@billhatcher2984 It was in the early 80's l bought a dozen 98 actions at a yard sale. I did build a .280 Rem. 98 action. Two years ago l did a 7mm-08 for my granddaughter. Probably the only 98 with a lot of lavender accents. I built all my grandkids rifle. They pick out caliber and stock. Still have 2 actions left and no more grandkids.
@Buddha-of8fk Try some Hodgdon H-4895. From what ive seen the 8-06 loves it. With a 175gr sierra pro hunter we got a velocity of 2889, and its superbly accurate.
Fun fact .280AI brass is fire formed meaning you have to fire a .280 rem in a .280AI barrel which reshapes the brass from 30 degrees shoulder to 40 degrees shoulder
The 280AI is a cartridge on its own. You don't have to fireform the 280 Rem. You can buy 280 AI ammo. The AI chamber is cut so you can fire 280 Rem without issues. The 280 AI chamber has the 40* shoulder, it also has less body taper.
On paper the 7 mm AI is more efficient than the 7 mm mag, nearly matching its ballistics with a bit less recoil. But the 7 mm mag ammo is much more widely available and it has the reputation as the premier long range elk cartridge.
With some loads the 280 AI can exceed the 7 mm Mag. The 280 Rem is often within 150 fps with some loads. If reloaded up to proper pressure it cuts that margin in half. Another thing with most rifles the mag hold 3 or 4, the 280 and AI hold 5. The ex5a round may not mean much but it's there.
@@leonhart2452 the only way the 7 mm AI can exceed the 7 mm mag is with higher pressure. The 7 mm mag is already at high pressure so it's on you if you want to increase the 7 mm AI pressure over the recommended numbers. Probably a bad idea for a little bit more velocity.
7mm bullet from 160gr to 195Gr for ling range is king! Have a 30-inch barrel with a 1:7 twist for the 180's and 190's long pills. Kicks butt over the 6mm and 6.5mm
When I decided to enter the .284" diameter I thought about 280AI and 7-08 but went with the 28 Nosler. It drives a 162gr. ELD-X 3175FPS and smacks very, very hard. I think the .284" is the sweet spot for all hunting applications in North America.
