The Guillotine Choke is the fifth fastest choke to put someone to sleep. Today Mark Hatmaker Will show you how to do this popular BJJ and MMA technique. The Guillotine Choke is a popular submission technique in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, mixed martial arts (MMA), and other grappling sports. It involves using your arms to encircle the opponent's neck in a manner that applies pressure to their windpipe or arteries, potentially leading to a submission. A standing Guillotine Choke is executed from a standing position, which can be particularly effective in self-defense situations or in combat sports when both competitors are upright. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to perform a standing Guillotine Choke:
1. Establish Control
Begin by facing your opponent.
Use one hand to control the opponent's head or neck. This can be achieved by grabbing the back of their head or neck, ensuring that you have a firm grip.
2. Position Your Gripping Hand
Slide the hand that is controlling the head under the opponent’s chin.
Make sure your forearm is positioned against their throat.
3. Secure the Choke
With the hand that is under your opponent's chin, reach up and grasp the wrist of your other hand. This is often done by wrapping the free hand over the opponent’s shoulder to secure a deeper grip.
For a more secure grip, some practitioners prefer to use a palm-to-palm grip or to lock their hands together in a gable grip.
4. Apply Pressure
Once your grip is secure, apply pressure by pulling up with the arm that is under the chin and pushing down with the other arm.
Simultaneously, arch your back slightly and push your hips forward. This increases the pressure of the choke.
5. Finalize the Submission
To maximize the effectiveness, elevate onto your toes to ensure you are applying as much upward pressure as possible.
It’s crucial to be mindful of your opponent's response and be prepared to adjust your grip or position to maintain the choke.
Safety and Considerations
Always practice this technique under the supervision of a qualified instructor, especially because of the inherent risks involved in neck submissions.
Be aware of your training partner's limits and tap out signals to prevent injuries.
Practice and Application
Practice this technique with partners of varying sizes and skill levels to understand how to adjust your grip and positioning.
Incorporate drills that start from different scenarios, allowing you to work on entering into the Guillotine Choke from various positions and situations.
Remember, the key to effectively executing any submission, including the standing Guillotine Choke, lies in practice, timing, and understanding the mechanics behind the move.

I learned mine from the chest not a headlock. The headlock is a beautiful aspect. I've seen both. Bas Rutten does it from the chest on his back from the ground as a counter to the mount. Using the environment to weaken a counter is brilliant.

The squat will allow you to push back for an obstacle but leaves you open for a single leg takedown. In a bar most likely not an issue, I wouldn't try it against an experienced opponent.
