Fun fact: the songs are 100% canon - they’re actually singing, it’s not just a performance. They reference this when they show that Connie actually recorded the ‘do it for her’ song on her phone. Gems in the show communicate both through speech and song.

The movie takes place after the events of the original series (seasons 1-5), so if you watch it before the show I don't think you'd have a very good experience having no context what so ever and spoiling basically everything from the original series. There is also a limited epilogue series called Steven universe future, which takes place after the movie and is a very good watch as well. So to summarize, if you were to watch the show in its proper chronological order you would watch: 1st: Steven universe seasons 1-5 2nd: Steven universe the movie 3rd: Steven universe future Idk if this helps but I did it anyway.

“It’s over isn’t it” is about Pearl (the one singing) was in love with a woman named rose Quartz who is also Steven’s mother and rose fell in love with Greg (Steven’s dad) and that’s why she said that rose “chose him”

Don’t watch the movie til you’ve watched the whole show or there will be a lot you don’t understand 😊

Is no one going to talk about how Steven has perfect pitch? He knew the note for a drill. How many people can do that, And at his age no less?

Just please do yourself a favor and watch everything in order!! Season 1 can sometimes be a bit repetitive and hard to get through, but there's important context everywhere throughout the whole season. And I know some folks don't like the "filler"/townie episodes, but I adore them. The thing with Steven, especially when he's younger, is that he gets the same amount of excitement over going to get the same donut he's eaten every other day of his life as he does for a new gem mission. He's a boy who is just so happy and thrilled and excited to be *alive.* It's built up wonderfully... and it's important to watch it while it lasts because the end of the series doesn't leave him the same way. But it does leave him hopeful that he can love life again in the future.

Fun fact! Deedee (pearls voice actor) went in so hard while singing "It's over isn't it," that the animators had to redo the scene to match the intensity.

What I always liked about 'It's Over Isn't It' is that in the beginning, Pearl gave a wistful smile to a Rose she picked up. Especially since she was singing about a character named Rose.

peridot (the green girl in the second song), takes things so literally because she is a representation of autism! she is on the spectrum, and conversations with loved ones and understanding human concepts were very challenging for her at the start. i’m glad you noticed that about her !!

Steven universe future "Disobedient"

The Movie comes after Season 5, and spoils pretty completely up to that point.

the second song is actually the first time we ever heard that specific character sing. it was a much waited moment in the fandom and yes, she takes everything literally

If you haven’t you should react to adventure time songs, The Creator Of Steven universe wrote music for adventure time.

The fact that he hasn't watched the full show and starts with Spinel kills me inside.

Fun facts! Most of the singers in Steven Universe have had Broadway experience! DeeDee (voice of Pearl) has done Broadway, I think Jennifer Paz (Lapis) has as well, Zach has an album out, and even later on we have Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole singing, both of whom are Broadway veterans. Garnet is actually voiced by Estelle who is also an amazing musician. Another fun fact: they ended up changing some of the animation for “it’s over, isn’t it?” Because of how Deedee sang it and added so much emotion and power behind it. This show takes its music seriously and it shows.

WATCH THE SERIES FIRST, THE MOVIE IS 100% CANNON AND NEEDS CONTEXT

After hearing all you had to say about the kids show Steven Universe being beautiful, have you seen Avatar The Last Airbender? There’s no singing character numbers in it at all but the soundtrack is gorgeous and the show is a *deep* masterpiece.

As a note, the lady who plays Spinel (Drift Away, Other Friends) is a Broadway/Off-Broadway legend. Many actors on the show have theater or musical backgrounds. Garnet's VA is a soul singer whose biggest hit was American Boy. Pearl's VA played lead on one of the tours of WIcked, the dad is a DJ who memetically sang a pop song on a dare, two of the antagonists who sang are literal queens of Broadway...

You should watch the show like this: Season 1 to Season 5 Then watch the movie And there after comes Steven Universe Future! That's how you should watch this

From what I've heard, the singer/voice-actress for Spinel (the one singing in Other Friends) did that on the first try, in one take.

I think my favorite part about this show is that so many of the characters have a broadway background. My mom was a performer in San Diego, so she got to know a lot of people in the business and actively recognized many of the voices and was thoroughly impressed that they took that extra step.

The gems poofed. When their bodies are badly damaged, they turn back into gems. They regenerate over time though, as long as nothing happens to the actual crystal.

Hey, I’m fairly new to the channel, but may I suggest Mother Mother? You may already listen to them since you’ve mentioned listening to a lot of like indie alternative bands, but if not I think you would really like them! Their sound is so unique and while it’s hard to exactly explain why, their music makes me really happy! on the song "it's over isn't it" the "she" she's singing about is called Rose, and she's pratically dead. So she sings the whole song holding a rose in her hand, but when she says "she's gone" for the last time, she throws rose away, like she's talking about Rose that she fell in love with

Yay! That Distant Shore is my favorite song of the whole series. I love and relate to the character who sings it. The context of the song makes me feel sad in a good way. And of course it also sounds very nice. PS: For the longest time that character did not have a song in this show which is a real shame. Her voice is beautiful.

The observation you made about lapis's song being something that could be more but still seeming like it was just enough as it was. Is really interesting because that's very much who lapis is a character.

One thing I’ll point out time and time again about It’s Over Isn’t It?: The look she gives the flower. “War and glory, reinvention.” The look of distain. Part of her misses that life she had before everything, even if she knows she can never go back to it

As a side thought: The best thing would be if you recorded/reacted to songs as you hit them. That way you had all the weight of the show behind them and you could dig into each of them as you go. I'm excited for you to hit a few songs. There are just so many and they're all *so* good. I'm sure you'll love the series even more as you speed through but hopefully we can at least get whatever highlights you can share! And most especially reactions to the music! (if possible)

The message he gave at the meddle of the video hit me sooo much. Im a singer and I just love singing but all my family spects me to sing in family parties and uplaod videos on social media WHY? my brother has told me "Why do you even go to singing classes if you just sing in your room??" cause I love it and I dont care. So much people spect me to be a singer just cause Im good at singing BUT I DONT WANT TO, what he said though it was short made me feel like Im not the only one in this kind of situation and that Im not wrong (cause there has been times I've thought Im wrong for not sharing my singing) this made me feel better. Other friends was actually my introduction to Steven Universe. I never paid much attention to what I heard of it before, but this song got popular and floated over to my side of the internet. I loved it, was just as confused as you about it XD
