Thanks for the comments on how negative number's work ;) I'm aware, but please keep in mind that I've tried to explain it in a way that would make sense to the majority of viewers and included the graphics to remove any confusion. Happy flying!

Excellent Video! Yesterday I lost my ZOHD Drift in a field with tall grass and could not find it for 20 minutes. Then I remembered that I might use signal strength and watched your video on my phone to see how to do it. At first I walked past my plane several times because I assumed that I would see a number close to -25 db near the plane, but with -65 db I was almost on top of it already. Holding my TX antenna to the RX I get about -27 db. So thank you very much for helping me recovering my plane!

Did the same with FrSky and FlySky radios a while ago. This finding method indeed works. Still it is good to have a buzzer in your model. And even better - with batttery backup, because batteries may detach. Racing/freestyle pilots will understand.

lost a toothpick in salt marsh, loose power lead on the VTX meant I had little idea where it came down and it had the quietest becon sound and in the windy conditions it may as well not been on. Genuinely thought I’d never see it again. The ELRS signal strength telemetry saved me… although it took me a few minutes of wandering around in panic before I figured out I could use it to get a zero on where the quad was. Very useful!! Also I had no idea if it would work or not but I wandered away from the area I thought the drone was until RSSI bottomed out and then did my first spin, then realised it may just work.

Seeing that you still have telemetry is always a relief. Our best recovery of a 'wayward' model was almost 2 miles away using this method!

You can also check for the weakest signal by pointing the null of the antenna where you want to check. That works better sometimes. I have GPS as well as a self powered buzzer. Also just got the mandatory RID module and suppose that might come in handy for finding a downed model as well.

Yes, I have done this! Lost my quad in a large field of dense grass, bushes and thorny things. I got close but still could not see it. In addition I had a very loud beeper on the pre-arm switch. The kind of beeper that must also be connected to 5V power. Afterwards I could hardly believe how easy it was.

I have used this 8 years ago by setting up a switch on my x9d plus radio which can be pressed to play the sound for RSSI in db so that I would know which direction I should go in search for my drone in the field. 😊

Keep in mind that you can have dynamic power set in ELRS and that can confuse this method.
@tubamanandy2
@tubamanandy2 11 месяцев назад
Agreed, numbers will change with different power levels but if you still walk in direction of lowest value (strongest signal) you should still find your model ?

I've used this system but I've also spun up the motors too as a way of finding it as long as they are able to spin up freely(for a few moments only).

Long while ago based on DIY ELRS TX using ESP32 I make somekind of bird tracker (tracking RX position) using the same method. Add some buttons, oled and buzzer for setting & notification. while for the RX I'm using the Matek PWM RX and add buzzer on a channel to locate the bird if we're close enough.... 😄

I've been using GPS telemetry to find my way to lost models. Can put the coordinates into my phone and it'll usually get me close enough for the beeper. It saved my Dolphin after the motor burned and it "landed" in a corn field. With some GPS models costing as little as $15, they're just going to go on anything with a spot for one.

You had me confused here. To me the lowest number is the number that is most negative. So with all RSSi values on the radio being negative, -100 is lower than -50. I realize that it's different from FrSky, so we'll done that you took the effort to explain it.

Pair this technique up with a gyro and radio manufacturers could have a great built in feature.

Perhaps a lua script could display an arrow based on this feedback? I don't know what graphics libraries are available. I did this once by connecting my cell phone to my go pro and once I found the camera, I searched in increasing radius for the drone that had rejected the battery and the camera on impact.

There is a LUA script already (see link in description) but the idea of it storing the values and heading, like the motion tracker in ALIENS, is a great idea!
