Use 2x10 or 2x12 lumber instead

It's like this: 2x3 and 2x4 lumber can be cut from very small trees. Those boards almost always have the pith (center of the tree) in them, which is the most unstable part of the tree. 2x3 and 2x4 boards, when used for furniture, are likely to twist and cup.
Instead, if you have the tools to process lumber (like a tablesaw), then I recommend that you buy the WIDEST BOARDS that you can. Specifically, look at 2x10 or 2x12 lumber.
These boards are bigger, so they need to come from bigger trees, which means if you sort through the stack you can much more easily avoid any boards with pith in them. In fact, you can very easily find boards with lots of nice straight grain, and even quarter-sawn grain.
Yes, you still want to make sure that the wood is dry and acclimated to your shop. I always buy the wood ahead of time and let it rest in my shop for several days or more.
IMPORTANT: I'm talking about BUILDING FURNITURE. When it comes to using these types of boards for construction, then none of this applies.

Why do so many of those larger boards have cracks in them? Sometimes multiple cracks?
@Wordsnwood

because the end grain is exposed and the board will dry faster from the end grain than from the side grain. This causes stresses which lead to cracks. People who process their own lumber from trees will paint the end grain of boards (with paint or waxy stuff) to seal it up and slow the drying process so it is more uniform.

@@Wordsnwood yes, but we see a grade of 2x4 lumber here that is amazing, it’s a “J-select” lumber, and I’ve found what are essentially quarter sawn 100% clear 2x6, yes a 2x6 that is eight feet long without a single knot, and it’s quarter sawn, not kidding. Even the 2x4s are generally good. An eight foot 2x4 in September of 2023 was ¥1,097 or about $10.11 CDN.

@@TokyoCraftsman Do you listen to the woodtalk podcast? couple months ago on the podcast Shannon (who works in the lumber industry) was talking about plywood and how you can get great quality plywood in Europe and Asia but in North America the market refuses to pay for top quality, hence all the talk about garbage plywood that we see here. sounds like your market is also willing to pay for quality 2x4 stock, at least as an option!

Lol 2x4's and 2x6 ,2x8, 2x10 all cut from same trees generally the size tree a commercial lumber mill will run is between 18-20 inches in diameter. Plywood sheets are turned off bigger logs and the leftover from that is turned into landscape timber and post.

I admit I don't work at a lumber mill... but it is certainly true about the pith being in most every stick at the local home center.
