A tribute to the late Athelston Williams, a semi-regular identity parade guest who recently died of prostate cancer, Aged 83. RIP Athelston Part 1: • Never Mind The Buzzcoc... Part 2: • Never Mind The Buzzcoc...
They dedicated an episode to his memory when he died. I do hope they include him in the compilation of classic Buzzcocks moments that's supposed to air, though
I'll be surprised and upset if the last episode isn't basically this set of clips. There's been nothing of Athelston in that 'best of' series so far and he is Buzzcocks's ultimate cult hero.
It gets more ridiculous every time - 'Okay this time put Athelston AND the pirate in there', 'This time Athelston and TWO pirates,' 'Now they're all pirates and Athelston...', 'Now Athelston is also dressed as a pirate!' 'Now it's three pirates, Athelston in a pirate costume, and the GUEST is dressed as a pirate!'
I’m sure I remember Athelston’s appearances in the line-up getting to the point where Lamarr would run through numbers 1-4 then just go “Or is it Number 5: Athelston?” Am I misremembering? Did all that tequila and Smirnoff Ice back in the early 00s rot my brain?
He was always the funniest part of Buzzcocks for me. Does anyone know if they had a tribute to him when he died? Even if it was just a screen at the end, it seems horrible that they wouldn't remember such a well remembered part of the show.
