Loved the video, great information but I think you left a few things out like rushing your approach, your eyes drifting off of target or you are looking up at the pins to soon all these things can also cause you to pull the ball and even miss outside your intended target. I've found with my students that when they rush through their approach, they tend to pull the ball more times than not and every once in a while, they'll go outside their mark. I always tell them remember to take the time to get set on the approach and get fully focused in on your target before you start your approach. Next keeping your eyes on target, a lot of bowlers have a big problem with this. When I was young and our dad was teaching us to bowl, he would make us come back and write down where our ball hit on the lane (I make all my students do this today) i.e., were we one or two boards outside or inside our target or did we hit our target? If we couldn't tell him or write down where our ball hit on the lane that meant our eyes drifted or we looked up before we actually thew the ball. While practicing and even during league play or tournaments make it a thing to write down where your ball hit after each throw, after a while you'll be able to make note of it in your brain and you can correct your mistake from there. He taught us to keep our head down and eyes on our target until after we saw the ball get past it's intended target then we could look up to see how the ball shaped down the lane and where it hit or missed in the pocket, and we could adjust accordingly for the next shot. A lot of bowlers think they must look up quickly to see what their ball is doing down lane and where it is hitting in the pocket and that's just not the case. Keep up the great work and I hope this information helps someone who may come along and read these comments. Y'all have a good, safe and blessed weekend.
I’ll Agree soon as I throw the ball I’m looking up just a mindset thing like I’m going to throw it in the gutter if I don’t see how my ball is moving lol
Of course there is always more things! We just wanted to state a few for someone to keep an eye out for without having to watch a 45 minute video. Short and sweet for the first one, we will do some others touching on other things! Thank you for watching and supporting the channel! It means a lot!
I think aiming and focusing on hitting a specific mark leads to bad rolling balls. Looking down lanes helps keep the ball deep and right. Your teaching is basic and outdated.
4:30 LOVE how Nathan explained that if you push the ball away LATE, it means you will be EARLY at the release. Cuz it means everything will have to catch up. Was struggling with that for YEARS.
I have had to fight my way through each issue in this video without any help except using my phone to record myself bowl. And it takes months and months to figure that out. I’m so glad you’re helping people avoid that time that isn’t necessary that they can spend practicing the right things instead of reinforcing the wrong things !
Finally it makes sense to me why bringing your shoulders forward first is bad. I've heard it before, and have issues with that, but was never explained why. Great demonstration!
I'm a right handed bowler and a pretty big guy. I use the 5 step approach and my coach has me startng with me holding the ball more to my side instead of the ball over the target and with my hips in an open postion before I even take my first step. It has made a world of difference for me keeping the ball in the slot when I let the ball drop into my back swing and follow through. Watching this video, now I see why it's so important to have that room for the ball to swing in the slot freely so you're not rotating your right shoulder over. Thanks fot this video it's a big help.
This is great, compiling all the common issues into 1 video. I have figured it out most of the same, but took me 2 years. This helps confiming my experiences. I'm sure this will help others get there a lot faster if they follow everything you demonstrated. Great job. Truly helps us wannabes that want to improve their game the correct way. Thanks for sharing!
You both did a great job with this coaching video. This was a lot of information but you both articulated yourselves in a clear and concise manner that made it easy for the viewer to understand.
I learned how to keep my shoulders and hips lined up with my target throughout my approach. I did greatly cut down the times that I would tug it but it didn't completely eliminate it. I just kept doing my best to like I said not only keep my shoulders and hips lined up with my target. But I also would walk toward my target.
You know, I saw y'all up there while I was practicing, and didn't know if it would be weird to just walk up and say hi while y'all were practicing or not.
Absolutely golden information! Wish I'd seen this 20 years ago. To remedy early timing, I recently tried to start the last step at the same time the ball starts down. Based on what I am seeing here with Nate, the left foot should already moving forward by the time the ball hits it peak and starts down. Will be on the lanes tonight to try it out!
Make sure your foot is flat on the ground before the ball drops I just got. Lol my trail leg is my struggle to help with opening hips.i keep dragging my foot straight instead of putting all my weight on my slide for I'm guessing. Also. Not understandinf the swipe at release. I do like and 2 and 3 step drills as well as at home in yard but once i get in to bowling a game im go right back to my old ways loke im pitching softball again. Throwing my hand out. 😢😢
I was +39 for 5 games today focusing on early timing and shoulder alignment from this video. This was easily the best travel league series I have had this year while struggling through my worst season in quite a while. I am anxious to see what else you talked about previously and in the future. Thank you.
What's your advice if you're finding out the approach is so worn out that you can't get much of a slide out of it? I have major problems being encountered so far after being away from the sport of so long. I bought adjustable shoes so I can change the pads. Can you help me out?
@@NateandElise Especially the parts about early timing and the problem with having too short of a slide step as it relates to flat spot. I'm gonna have to try it out, but the short slide step might be causing my shoulders to over-rotate... a lifelong issue for me.
on the approach and delivery are you saying to do a cross over step to get out of the way of the ball. i've seen it mentioned in other videos but have never tried it. it makes sense and would probably help me, thnx for the help.
When bowling. I try not to have items in my pockets, such as keys cause I'm more focused on them than my shot, but stay aware of theft from other bowlers and passerbys.
The most common cause of me tugging it inside is when I try to accelerate my arm rather than wait on it, this causes me yank it inside. BTW: WOW your feet are BIG Nate! What size do you wear?? Looks like 14.
So what. This is an educational video, not a tournament or league vid. Besides, being as close to the foul line as a bowler can without fouling is important. Even the best foul, but it's extremely rare.
Thank you Thank you Thank you... This is really good information and something I've been trying to figure out. I'll practice on this and keep up the good work. Please post more videos like this with tips for us beginners.... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!
I know this video is 7 months. I do have a question. When reach the foul line, my foot is not straight. Example, toe at 21 board and heel at 17. This is varied through out the game. I discovered it on my videos. I’m working on it next week while I have time before leagues start in 2 weeks. Any suggestions to correct this problem. Also after the release my toe slides to the right.
Thanks guys for sharing your experience/knowledge with us. I never knew that by widening your slide will help with your flat spot, Will try at my next practice.
I agree with many of other comments nothing new from me, length of slide and flat spot relationship first time I heard that, feet being too close together at foul line and shoulder movement, big for me, I could feel it didn't understand the cause. Not everyone has or will have college level bowling coaching, two of you are helping countless others with their bowling game, more than you will ever know. I never had any coaching when I was young or ever till lately, you are part of my coaching team with your videos, you keep mentioning key factors that one can forget about while working on something else. 75 yrs old and grateful for discovering your online videos.🤜🤛👍😊🙃😊
As a 4 step bowler, taking a shorter 3rd step and a longer slide step has increased my scores substantially. Not pulling the ball now and more power. Thanks!!!!
Same 4 step bowler here. I found out the hard way that this one bowling alley slide surface is so GD worn out that I pulled a muscle behind my left thigh. I doubt I'll be using those lanes much. Honestly, I can't even think how I'll be able to bowl if 'ALL" the lanes near here are worn out. What I did was buy these really expensive shoes that you can replace the underneath sole and heal if you want. Are you familiar with any of those shoes? I'm trying to get up enough practice to perhaps join a senior league in the summer or something. I have just bought all new equipment, I bowled back in the days of plastic and hard rubber balls, I was in the mid 180's avg. then. I'm way older these days and wanted to take up the sport again. I can't be falling at the foul line or fall forward, I don't know what to do other than these things. Any ideas? I'd love to hear them.
Is there a video about aiming , and what your target should be on the lane. I have seen videos that say we should be aiming at our target, not necessarily just throwing straigt
Isn’t early/late timing where the ball is when your slide stops? It’s one of the reasons you project the ball onto the lane or into the foul line. I notice of late Nate is quite late and can’t project the ball towards his target, and With Elise instead of getting the ball onto the lane, she releases it at the foul line. Both might be considered pulls. One other thing is that Brenna Clemmer has her off arm out at the side her whole delivery and it rarely gets in front of her, and she’s not bad.
Pulling the ball is correlated to targeting and if you hit your intended mark. This has nothing to do with how a person physically releases the ball since almost every bowler has their own characteristics to how they release the ball… and ALL can still hit a target. Both Nate and I physically throw it differently off our hand but can both hit a mark 9 times out of 10. All bowlers pull it at some point… these are just ways to fix it!
We love watching you and Nate at Cityview in Ft Worth. Hopefully someday you and Nate will come back to Ft Worth and bowl in 1 of our tournaments. Welcome to Cowtown
I have subscribed to your channel for I’m so impressed with your content and help for I have several issues that you have explained an are going to start working on. I hope to go into more detail as I watch your videos in the future
Excellent ty so much I'm trying to get back into the game it's been several years and I do remember my stands were definitely a problem but I highly appreciate it so very much..
Great video. Does the balance arm play a role in tugging. Mine goes way up in the air too high, I don't know why and I'm having trouble correcting it. Any tips on this?
Yes, that can also be a contributing factor. Nate actually struggled with that problem being a reason why his shoulders moved early. Try putting a hand weight on your balance arm is the easiest technique but there are a couple other ways.
thank you for this, and didn't know Nate struggled too. I never see other people with this issue. I'm going to get a weight great idea, thanks! Love your channel.@@NateandElise
Would have to disagree. Timing is merely where your foot is when you are releasing the ball. Unless it is extreme, whatever is natural to the bowler is fine. Suggest you watch Bob Ross video about this. He isd former team USA coach and a gold USBC coach.@@NateandElise
I literally just asked about this in the comments after watching a video of Elise bowl in the PWBA Finals 3 days ago. Then 2 days later...VOILA! Not taking credit....just awesome timing on this(no pun intended). I got a new ball for Christmas that fits better than the other 2 and the tugging issue seems to have lessened dramatically. Who'd have thought! You guys gave me lots of technique to focus on if it creeps up again though. Very much appreciate this video!! ❤
@@NateandElise Every tip you gave are things I notice when watching myself bowl. I just lack technical knowledge to connect those things to tugging. Will be some hard habits to break but really appreciate having been given the tools I need to elevate my game. Gonna be sharing this one with some friends. 🤜🤛
Wow- learn a few new things everyday ! Thank you. As a left hander, my miss is usually left of my intended target. Be advised, I think I lose sight of target as my approach nears the foul line. Guess thinking swing instead of target ? Suggestions ? Thanks
Your whole theory on timing is completely flawed and could really ruin somebody's progress. This isn't what USBC or BTBA teach in their coaches courses.
@NateandElise then you should know that they teach you that you release should start on the second step in a 5 step approach. You got it right with a 4 step approach. Why would the timing be different? Time to go back to your notes.
