For many, the term "dumpster diving" evokes stomach-turning images of half-moldy rolls and recently-expired tuna salad snatched from the mouths of gnawing rats. But as many sophisticated urban survivalists know, there is an extraordinary amount of perfectly good, even gourmet, food set out every night in sanitary bags outside city delis, bakeries, restaurants, and supermarkets. The video above shows just how easy and clean the process of scoring great free food can be.

I work at grocery store, and feel I should explain some of this. many times stuff like to yogurt will com in a pack that is damaged, aka one busted, and by law (at least in my state) we have to throw that out. Other times a customer will return something and for what ever reason we cant put in back on shelf or a customer left a cold item out somewhere in the store, again making it to where we havet throw it away. Lastly the sell by dates on the packages don't necessarily mean that the food is bad past that date, but again we have to throw it out cause it's the law. At least it means we get a free snack sometimes when pulling food.

That sell by date thing is so crazy. LIke you go into a store and it says sell by September 10th and its an egg sandwich... so if I eat that egg sandwich on september 11th I'm gonna fucking die or get food poisoning? Its wild, I didnt realize how easy it is to do in NYC but never really thought of it. I'm gonna start looking at these garbages more often when I'm working in Manhattan from now on just to see how much shit gets thrown out.

That shit is real. I remember when I worked at Starbucks they used to try to make us do the same thing. Cakes, sandwiches, brownies, cookies and all kinda shit, TRASH. Perfectly good food just thrown away smmfh. I actually got in trouble for giving it to homeless people that hung around the store so I just started taking it with me when I left and giving it away in the neighborhood. Shit is just sad.

They get mad at you for giving homeless people expired food because its a potential lawsuit if they get diseases.. im not saying its possible.. but no business feeds the homeless from throwaway food.. its got nothing to do with niceness.. just protecting your business.. besides most homeless people are very good scavengers who know how to get your throwaway food anyway.. this way the business is protected from any blame and the homeless can have whatever the fk they want..

John Chen Well here is a way to to look at it. say the reporter was you doing what you do every night NO cameras just you looking for dinner, could you afford for your boss to see you doing that? Say you had a shitty job serving people, you would be fired the next day. If your boss saw you then potential customers could see you.

I'm not sure what you mean. But I know that the reporter is playing a certain type of character for the camera, and it's supposed to make the video more interesting for us as the viewer.

The whole foods markets in Boston are really generous with left over food. I volunteered with a group called student food rescue at Boston university and whole foods was by far our biggest supplier of bread, cakes, pastries etc. they were always happy to give to food pantries, sometimes 6 or more large trash bags full of fresh food, and they ended up feeding a lot of people in the Boston area!

Naldoking don't be scared to eat anything I have developed a very strong immune system due to myself not giving a fuck about expiry dates. Check organic food stores and farm markets they are very wasteful and provide me with nutrition and exotic organic foods. I am seventeen now and have overtime learned which locations are best to dumpster dive at in my area. If you have any pets go to pet stores they are by far the most wasteful people on the planet and love to throw out hundreds of pounds of high quality foods daily instead of donating it. Lastly, don't give a shit what others think. You will get much more if you don't care if people are watching you and continue to do your thing. Oh and if there is too much food for you to eat share it with others who need it or donate it. In the states they are more wasteful than Canada (where I live) so if you live there you are blessed with some damn good dumpsters, good luck

I used to visit my friend in Manhattan NY. Lots of restaurants there. Top restaurants would throw away 10 untouched pizzas, etc. The food was placed separated from contamination, perfectly edible.
