This is the point where Ellie becomes THE Ellie, sadly. Such an amazing episode and, give Bella Ramsey an Emmy! Her acting throughout the series is incredible and her acting at the end was just amazing! Pedro's as well, amazing as Joel. The baby girl at the end just broke me.
@@wooshbait36 Wholly disagree. That would have been a horrible decision and all the people that give Bella Ramsey s*** or did give her s*** because she doesn't look EXACTLY like game Ellie (which is ridiculous in and of itself, it's a video game character 🫠) probably wouldn't have even bothered to watch the show. Let's bfr...
@@wooshbait36 she's really not and it baffles me that so many people say this. She's not a conventional ✨️MODELESQUE MOVIE STAR✨️ and that's because Ellie isn't either 🙃 she's literally just your average teenage girl. So for people to say a person portraying a 14 year old needs to be more "attractive" to fit the role is major ICK. She is beautiful, she's just not f***ing Scarlett Johansson or Keira Knightly "beautiful" and that's fine! 🤗
After Joel finds Ellie, you can see how panicked she is, and you can slowly see the awareness come back in her eyes until she recognizes Joel. And after the "Baby Girl", you see the broken watch and he closes his eyes as he really lets her in his heart... that BROKE me...
Joel comforting Ellie and calling her "baby girl" was the most beautiful way to end this heart-thumping episode! SO not ready to have this season finish - I simultaneously want episode 9 to be here right now, and never happen!!
Never seen an episode of television show a moment when Childhood was so traumatically and irrevocably ended. Phenomenal acting from Bella Ramsey.. give her that Emmy.
Incredible episode, gut wrenching, powerful, very emotional and traumatizing. This was where Ellie became a force to be reckoned with. Outstanding performance by Bella for sure. Fun fact: James is played by Troy Baker who played Joel in the games.
We see just how smart and resourceful Ellie is! Distracting them with her being infected, then capitalizing on their fear was brilliant. I love how the actors for the game get to be part of the show!!
AS the first scene begins, Verowak says "I don't think I'm ready for this." and I'm thinking 'Little do you know!' We learned the name of pure evil was: David. Then we were warmed by the greatest seven word payoff in TV history: "It's okay baby girl. I got you." Great react!
James, David's right hand man (and the one who Ellie killed with the cleaver when she was on the table) is played by Troy Baker, who actually played Joel in the game.
@@VerowakReacts Would be amazing if you play Part I and II and post it here. Part I so that you see the OG masterpiece coming from the show and Part II but please avoiding all spoilers.
@@solidsnake8572 Part II would wait until Season 2 if anything lol Though I've been told that some things from Part II are in Season 1, so I'm not sure
Great reaction as always! Little cool thing: the guy that went to get the medicine for Ellie and that got the cleaver in the neck at the end is the voice actor that plays Joel in the video game! Edit: Just seen that many others have already mentioned this 😅
Thank you! No worries if others have said it, it shows me just how many people have played the game and know this fun fact! When I do a rewatch, I'll know he's Joel in the game!
You touched on just about everything I was thinking. The only thing that I can add is that if anyone was going to kill David (Preacher) I'm glad it was Ellie because she's a potential victim of his. I do really like the bond/relationship that Ellie and Joel have.
@@VerowakReacts The makeup department would have had very little to do for those scenes, just have the actors stand outside for a few minutes. 😂 I was thinking though, when David says "I'm not speaking in code, James, do as I say" does that mean that they DO speak in code other times? Like "Spotted a couple of deer" actually means "Spotted a few people?" To eat, that is... 🤔
Damn, that episode was amazing! Love the relationship development throughout this series but especially the last few episodes. Amazing characters and acting 🥰 Thanks so much Verowak! Great reaction video as always🙂
For the quote trivia, this quote was said by Tess outside of the museum in episode 2, talking with Joel, before she dies. I enjoyed how you could see her growing desperation in that one line.
Hands down my favorite episode. Shows you the ruthlessness of Joel, the desperation during the apocalypse, the vengeance of Ellie. She exacted justice to exact person who deserved it. OMG!!!! This episode is so good! Thanks for your react, Verowak.
I love that we got to see Joel being ruthless. The things he does for love. Ellie is so smart, and it really shows in this episode, I loved it! Definitely tied for my favorite episode
@@VerowakReacts that was the thing, right?! He's officially her father now. This man will kill, fight infection (something somebody mentioned was that penicillin is actually a fungus, so the levels of irony of a girl infected with an incurable fungus administering a cure through a fungus to the man trying to deliver her as the cure to mankind 😱)
@@VerowakReacts The actor the plays Ellie (Ashley Johnson) in the next episode. Troy & Ashley’s incredible chemistry and performance in the game is the reason why it’s so successful imo
Quote trivia: Tess & Episode 2!! Whew this episode was INTENSE. As a huge fan of the game I knew what was gonna happen but it still made me panic during every scene. Especially the Ellie vs David scene bc it was so TRAUMATIZING and it breaks my heart that she had to deal with a man like that. But Joel coming in at the end to comfort her 🥹 made me so happy.
Correct on the quote!! The episode was intense and I loved it. They ended the episode on such a happy note, they're finally together and both conscious!
My favorite because it ended on a high note and a very touching and sweet scene after all the carnage. I can be pretty stoic about deaths of likable characters (I take myself out of immersion as a defense mechanism and I just get pissed off at the writers for killing someone off the show) but an uplifting bonding scene will have me tearing up. Joel was the emotionally scarred, reluctant guardian for a child and now he'll do literally anything for his adopted daughter's well being and she the same for him.
Omg at the end of this during the part where she kills David you could just feel Ellie’s fear, trauma, rage, and sadness at the same time. She was just in complete shock after what happened. And when Joel held her and said “it’s ok baby girl it’s me Joel!” after the way she started mumbling hysterically and then hugged him and started crying.. I have no words. That was so realistic. Bella Ramsey’s performance was amazing!
That torture scene was crazy good. My impression of it was They kidnapped the only thing that was keeping that menace locked up in Joel’s heart and when they took her it was straight demon mode. I have no doubt that if he had ran into anyone else before Ellie they would have probably gotten the same treatment.
The acting is so on point.... If you watched the scene where Ellie is on the table and are debating whether she is infected or not look at her eyes and the expression as sea sizing up the situation and she realizes that the cleaver is within reach.... It's subtle..... But she realizes that there's an opening for her to escape..... It's small but it's that little attention to detail that you subconsciously pick up and make seems like that much more intense.
Yes! That's one thing I love about editing, is that I can rewatch the show and certain scenes a few more times :D She sees them distracted and not looking at her for a split second and she acts on it
@@VerowakReacts I love Bella Ramsey she is a master of body language.....in the last episode when she is dancing with Riley even before she pulls her mask off you can see her body language subtly change. Btw love your reviews 😃
@@ianbrewster8934 Yes! There's way more to words in a scene and body language is so damn important for an actor. She does amazing in every scene, and thank you!! ☺
love rewatching these reactions again since we won’t get TLOU S2 for a while. I won’t get Bella’s screams out of my head for a while. David preys on her worst fear-ending up alone. I feel like she took all of her pent up rage, fear and grief onto him: each thwack was for Henry, Sam, Tess, Riley, her mom, and for Joel. I think this was the first episode where we’re reminded as the audience that yes, she’s such a brave, mature teenager, but she’s also just a little kid who needed her daddy in this moment after such a traumatic experience. My heart broke. Loved when Joel grabbed Ellie’s bag-it’s such a dad move, and you know had he been too late and Ellie had been killed, he’d want to have it as his last piece of HER. He probably thought she was dead (he saw her bag, the horse and the bodies), but he still didn’t lose hope. Pieces of people he’s lost bring him comfort (the watch from Sarah, the butterfly stickers in his room for Sarah, Frank’s flannel, Bill’s coffee, and he makes the rock memorial for Tess). I also loved the parallel: David considers himself a “father” to his people, but one of the first things he does when he has Ellie is strip her of her hat and coat and leaves her to freeze in the (probably frigid) kitchen. Juxtaposed with Joel, her actual father, one of the first things he does when he sees Ellie is notice she’s shivering and bundles her up in his coat to try to get her warm. I think we would all love a big bear hug from Pedro Pascal when we’re frightened. He just seems like the kindest, gentlest human being. ❤
This series has been just amazing. Rewatching it made me notice things I didn't before. I love your entire comment, it perfectly sums up this episode and why this series is so amazing!! 😍
This episode gives us some great insight into Joel, or at least 'Old Joel' when he and Tommy did terrible things to survive. Ellie tells Joel that 'Men are coming, if anyone comes down here, you kill them.' and that's all the information he was working with! He wakes up to a guy coming in and kills him with no questions asked or answered, just goes to work and then it's straight to torture time to figure out where Ellie might be. That's someone you seriously don't want to contend with.
Troy Baker’s role "James" made me so happy. This episode was dark, but I loved it, because the stakes increased every minute. The finale next week will be something. I am so curious how they finish the first season.
Hopefully not too much is changed. The reactions will be particularly interesting as Joel’s decision will divide opinions like it has done for the past decade. 😄
Thanks for the review. As far as Joel is concerned the attack started at the University and he was continuing that battle if you think about it. It's the same conflict. Joel is an antihero all the way through. The brutality is shocking to me but understandable and killing all 3 men seems quite pragmatic. It's been days and they are still trying to kill him so he needs to remove the threat that started when he was attacked at the university. Ellie is a bit more complicated. She hasn't really killed except Riley. She is a small woman who knows she is at a massive physical disadvantage to the threats around her. So her fear is transformed to rage to accomplish what she needs to do. Fortunately it was enough to get the job done and she was training at a military school to, as she told Riley, kill Fireflies. Use of violence is expected of her in her world. Where people get confused is in trying to apply current day morality and behavior to their situation.
Definitely cannot apply current day and societal morality for this situation. The world has ended and just surviving is such a hard thing to do. Joel knows that the men will keep coming after him if he lets them live, so it only makes sense to get rid of them. From seeing all perspectives, if makes even more sense to me since Alec attacked Joel first at the University. They were just trying to leave and Alec came swinging instead of talking. Ellie has been forced to face the harsh realities of life in this episode, and I feel she's going to be affected quite a lot by it :(
Ellie has flirted with violence throughout this entire show, even being shocked by shooting Bryan in episode 4. Now she's actually killed someone up close and so viciously, how will this affect her going forward? Is the violence just a necessary tool of survival in this world? Because Tommy said to Joel, there is always another way! Or is she just becoming the personification of Joel... Truly becoming his daughter? I love your honesty of emotions throughout this series by the way... You show a good heart.❤ Oh, and the quote... It's Tess on the roof of the museum in episode 2. 😉
Correct on the quote! I do think part of what Ellie and Joel do is for survival. Though there may be other ways of dealing with it, sometimes when you're pressed for time, it's normal to not take a while to ponder what the most morally correct course of action is. I feel like what they do is for survival 😊
@@VerowakReacts Yeah, there is the survival aspect I agree wholeheartedly. But also, Joel said before she shouldn't have to do stuff like that at 14. And now that she's done the most violent thing she could do, how do you think Joel will react to it? Because it looks like he doesn't actually know what happened in detail in there. And would Eliie even tell him? Or just bury that trauma like Joel has buried his? Will they help each other to get past their traumas together by bonding properly as father and daughter? So many questions! lol
I get what you’re saying. There’s a difference between doing what’s necessary to survive, and actually liking violence. Before this episode, Ellie *liked* violence. She tried everything to get her hands on a gun, she experimented on the infected that got trapped in that basement, and she was fascinated by the dead man in her flashback with Riley. But now, she’s come very close to being killed or possibly worse by David and for the first time, she has to kill a human man to survive. And there’s two ways it could go in the aftermath: either she realizes that violence is not as fascinating as she previously thought it to be, it’s heavy and real and scary. OR, her trauma causes her to become more bloodthirsty, to exact revenge on anyone who poses a threat, because she never wants to get hurt again. The second game definitely explores this question, so we shall soon see the path ellie goes down.
This chapter was my very favorite from the game. Naturally the game involves a lot more avoidance and combat - the section where Ellie tries to lead them away from Joel on her horse, then gets knocked off the horse is where I really got engaged with what was happening.
I don't have the words! This episode was peak. Just wow, bravo everyone and especially Bella. The ending was 100/10, perfection sobbing crying etc. I have no idea how this is going to end next week and I am just in denial about it tbh.
NO clue how it'll end either, but surely they can't provide an episode that surpasses the amazingness and perfection of this episode... right? Bella is just simply amazing in this, and I'm so excited to see Joel be more active next episode!!!!
After i finished school, i took a job doing the most unspeakable things that i couldnt really talk about (involved a lot of state/govt and military jurisdictions). My daughter was in elementary school but i told her later stories here and there. Id never want her to see that side of humanity but she knows its there b/c I was knee deep in it as well. She changes in this episode, childhood is left behind and she has learned to be on her own for once. Ive played the game before, but its incredible seeing Bella and Joel bringing this story to life.
I love that you're sharing these reactions with us! So great to see it with fresh eyes for those of us who played the game. "Baby girl" at the end still got me in my feels. Quote is Tess in Episode 2 🙂
His wound did not look the same. In the first shot before the antibiotics it was literally leaking out pus and looked pretty nasty. After the first shoot it was pretty much cleaned up, but still inflamed & swollen.
I think the next episode is going to be a really good one. There is only one thing that is going to make me VERY sad. It is also the grand finale which will hopefully set it up for season 2 and make us scream in anticipation.
The Last of Us is not a story about a zombie apocalypse per se. I mean it is, but at its core it's a story about loss, what it takes to survive, and finding love. Joel, ever since he lost Sarah, has had a void in his heart. And because of how he's lost Sarah he's been afraid to try to fill that void because all he knows is loss and he doesn't want to experience the pain of losing a loved one again. Which is why he was so distant and guarded with Ellie. But this is the first episode where you can tell he loves her like a daughter. And just like a biological daughter he'd do anything to protect her. Including letting the Berserk Mode Joel out. And Ellie has only ever wanted someone to love her and want companionship and Joel is finally that person she's wanted all her life.
Great reaction. Such a powerful, shocking episode. Amazing performance from Bella. And Pedro as always. Man I was rooting for them both so hard in this one. I really hope next episode they can have some healing, cause boy do they need it. But knowing this show and the general need for finales to go out with a boom, I'm scared that's not gonna happen aha.
@@VerowakReacts Yeah, you never know maybe they'll just let them spend the episode resting up, chilling and playing boardgames in a winter cabin somewhere XD
OHHH, I just realized why David told James the penicillin “wasn’t a code.” It’s because in the very beginning when they were talking outside, they were referring to what food they had left, calling it “venison” and saying one of the guys “found some more deer”, when clearly they both knew it wasn’t deer….
I think that may be looking a little too much into it. I think they were just talking about their men possibly spotting deer. They way he said "sometimes you see what you want to see " made you see how desperate they are. I think they would rather eat deer than people, it's whatever's available.
Great reaction Video . 22:30 i think he gave ellie the medicine so that she can lead them to Joel Poor ellie had no clue how easy it is to track footsteps in the snow . I think they not only wanted revenge but also wanted Joels body to eat . Great episode Def had one on edge from start to finish
2 things. 1: Joel called his daughter Sara "baby girl" in episode 1. 2: Yes both Joel and Ellie went beast mode in this episode. They did a good job of making even non-violent people happy with seeing the way David to his due in the end. Masterful episode.
A little detail i ve always loved about this in the vg is you dont hear joel say it. Most of the scene right after David s death is silent. Yet it speaks volumes
@@zardify_ I basically avoid anything to do with The Last of Us online since usually there are spoilers lurking about. I also don't look at the trailer for the next episode so I know nothing going in. She killed alternate universe Joel to me :D
Oh my God, I think I got equally as emotional when you said this was potentially your favourite series of all-time and is, at least, in the running there or thereabouts as I have done watching the show. It is an absolute joy to see people get into this story that means so much to me. I am still of the opinion that, as good as the show is, the game vastly surpasses it but because I have been so in love with the game for so long, I think that I was always going to feel that way and so my hope for the show has always been simply that people who do not know the game fall in love with these characters and this narrative like I did, irrespective of the medium. So watching this react series has been a big part of why I have felt fulfilled by the adaptation despite the impossible standards I set for it beforehand.
(Disclaimer: Just so you know my perspective, I haven't played the game.) As relieved as I was that Ellie had gained the upper hand and killed David, I was also absolutely devastated for her in that moment. Any innocence she still had was destroyed by what David did and attempted to do to her and by the fact that he forced her to hack him to death to avoid it. Ellie just lost a part of herself and will be forever changed and traumatised by these events. That guy was a monster. Joel, on the other hand, is an absolute weapon. The way he arose from his death bed and took out the men left behind to search for him, despite being wounded and nowhere near fully fit, was quite simply epic. As for that interrogation scene.... well, let's just say he wasn't messing around. I totally expected that Joel would burst in at the last minute to save Ellie, but I'm so glad they actually had Ellie save herself. She went beast mode. She's a true survivor. She is Joel's daughter. Anyway, I can't fault this episode and can't wait for the finale. P.S. If someone feels the need to tell you how good they are it's probably because they've shown you otherwise and as the old saying goes, "judge people by what they do, not what they say."
If he was telling the truth then its stomach turning to think that David was a teacher before the apocalypse with access to kids, he’s a full on predator and I doubt Ellie was his first target or victim.
@@NPA1001 Yeah, the teacher aspect is terrifying. His comment to Ellie that he enjoys the fight also suggests this isn't his first time. Afterall, how do you know what you like about something unless you've done it before?
@@TrentRidley There were a number of kids in his “flock,” and I totally got the chomo vibe from his interaction with Alec’s daughter. This is an abuse pattern that happens with cults in our world _now,_ so imagine how much more likely and easier it’d be in _theirs._ 🤢
Yeah, I think everyone initially expected Joel to save Ellie, which would be fine sure... But the way the game/show gets her to be out of options and have to save herself like that, it's more realistic. Sometimes you're just going to have to help yourself, and it's going to be horrific, but that's the price of survival.
This episode might have been the first time where I really noticed the accelerated pace but for non-players it probably just felt like an action-packed whirlwind of an episode. But even with that minor quibble they nailed all of the important moments from this chapter, especially David revealing he knows who Ellie is and Joel's interrogation. Bella Ramsey has done an amazing job with Ellie's progression, the scenes in the cage and on the butcher's block were absolutely perfect. I'm just hoping that with how much stuff should be happening in the finale it is like 80-90 minutes long, will definitely need moments to breathe
I feel like the next episode must be longer than usual. I obviously don't know where part 1 ends, but I feel like there's a lot more stuff that needs to happen in order for Joel and Ellie to get to a point where they are somewhat safe. I did really enjoy seeing Joel do his interrogation, I really wanted to know what he was like for the past 20 years
I really liked this episode, Bella Ramsey's performance was splendid for me to see Joel in killer beast mode was great, David's character just as scary and disgusting, overall a great episodio👌🏻❤️
The hug at the end was just so heartbreaking and such a relief that they have each other again! I was so scared for Joel earlier, then Ellie, but for now they're surviving 😭😍
@@VerowakReacts i agree with you, i thought that joel was going to lose ellie like he lost sarah, but when he found her wow, bella she did her best in this episode, in this final scene of the two hugging, her reaction to seeing him and his welcoming her as a father, after so much time with the hard work, I felt that he had a grudge against his daughter's death and in this episode he saw that she is the light he was looking for and wow, how this scene got to me,it was really strong.😭💔
@@VerowakReacts Yes, totally, I love Pedro Pascal's energy when doing interviews or talking to the cast, with bella, you know, he's funny and very sweet with kids, good people, he reminded me of my teacher from today who wanted to be called Pedro and his name is Sergio🥰🥰. This show has been one of the best one... and Bella og Pedro...... MY GOD. they are insane. kinda sad that people talked shit about Bella and that she was not a good Ellie, she is amazing and the quote is from Tess to Joel when Ellie crossed the plank on the roof
I know people were upset that Bella didn't look like Ellie in the game, which is really stupid. I would rather have an actor that looks different but can nail the role, than an actor who looks the part but can't act the range needed. And yes! That's exactly the scene for the quote :D
@@VerowakReacts totally agree with you. but let's be honest. HBO have nailed all the rolls so far. just look at david. you can just feel its something up with him. so creepy and scary. even tho i know the plot, it was kinda scary tbh :D
Being a huge fan of the game and following the show, it's interesting to hear the reaction from those who haven't played it. I always thought the story would translate well to a show, so I'm happy HBO of all took the plunge. It's been a fantastic production with a great cast. I'm not going to say what I think about the game vs the show as to not color your opinion on either version, but the remastered version of TLOU hits PC at the end of March and I highly recommend playing the game if you like the show.
I really want to play the game, though I don't know if season 1 is all of part 1 or partially part 2 as well. The series has been just fantastic so I'm curious to see how the game storyline is!!
@@VerowakReacts The first season of the show follows the first game's story. There are a few nods towards part 2 in season 1 but it doesn't change the overall plot. Judging by the trailer for the last episode, this season will probably end where the first game end's as well.
I've played both games a dozen times and when I first time heard that Bella Ramsay was casted as Ellie I almost cried of joy. She was so phenomenal in Game of Thrones when she was just eleven years old. And that's why I knew she could play a violent girl that we would need in the show. She was 17 when they filmed these scenes. She's phenomenal.
You have to play the video game after. So much more detail, longer term investment in the characters, longer screen time. Not sure how much of a gamer you are but it’s worth it. One of, if not the best story video game of all time.
