My house desperately needs this done to it, my house is only 26 years old...and built by a cheesy builder. When the builder said the house needs to breath, he meant it. Now I'm to old and broken to do anything about it. Love all the new products to build a house these days. Really, that's why I started watching Matt's channel, when he was refurbing his house.

Board and batten or lap he is saying 30% less than 17-20/ft2 so 12-14/ft2 is not at all a bad price, that could easily be installed by a couple of competent craftsmen. Which would make it a great way to overlay a terrible appearing concrete or wooden building. heck you could probably use it to remodel 80's brick homes which had vinyl above the mid point or had wood accents on larger brick homes in order to make them more maintenance friendly.

There is maintenance involved. Reading the small print to honor their 15-year warranty. Required Maintenance. Depending on the Project Environment, follow the maintenance schedule as outlined in the Longboard Care & Maintenance Guide. Use a soft sponge or cloth, water and mild detergent, non-abrasive soap with the pH range of 5-9 to clean the powder coated area of dirt, grim and other debris. Pressure washing is not recommended.

I am not sure what they would say but I think they use a thin window type bug screen but ultimately they don't care because its cut off from the house and bugs can't eat through the exterior insulation. In some houses they don't even caulk because all the siding is doing is preventing the sun from degrading the wrap
@jhaveruk1
@jhaveruk1 5 месяцев назад
Typically bug screen is used, as the other commenter says. It’s cheap, easy to get and effective. There is an option to return the cladding with a perforated plank, but then you want to be mindful of reducing effective R-Value with this method (especially when going for passive house levels like this). Interiors are a great fit, thanks for the comment! Non-combustible and easy to keep clean. Cheers,

I wondered this too. I know Rockwool is advertised as 'rodent and pest resistant', but with the space and the hollow-back spacer, it seems like ALOT of space for either pest or rodent opportunities. If you haven't browsed Green Building Advisor, the rodent resistance has been challenged anecdotally by a few... what caught my attention in the video though, and might answer your question (maybe this is what @jhaveruk1 was referencing) is around 15:05 or so where it looks like there is another lower channel support for cladding that would prevent about anything other than some spider and/or wasps from getting in at the bottom.

So, stainless and aluminum are nowhere near each other on the galvanic series. The potential difference is at least 0.5 volts and maybe as much as 0.75 volts. Factoring temp and humidity puts this into the severe galvanic corrosion category. Relying on the powder coating to insulate the two materials does not seem like a good idea long term due to the relative motion between the two materials as a result of thermal expansion/contraction. Eventually the powdercoat will wear through a lnd corrosion will begin. What am I missing?

We used to have aluminum siding on our house until a super derecho came through and blew a bunch of it off. The guys that came out to replace it told us they don't make that kind of siding anymore, and they threw on this cheap vinyl crap that already has several small holes from little bits shot out while mowing the lawn. Its nice to see aluminum again....but this vertical style, it makes it look like one of those sheet metal pole barns.

@lessercylinder
@lessercylinder 5 месяцев назад
@@greypoupon1300 Interesting, since the panels are powder coated, I was under the impression they couldn't be touched up in the field. I guess there's probably a difference between the edge being cut, and say a large scratch across the face of a panel. I'd hazard to guess you'd have to replace those panels - or accept a difference in sheen between the repair and the existing panels.

@jhaveruk1
@jhaveruk1 5 месяцев назад
Great question! Acts like a mini gutter and you could drill weep holes if you choose. This project has both level and sloped bottom J’s. Ultimately, any moisture collected won’t add up to much, as it does find its way out the ends (12’ trims). We hold a rainscreen test report called AAMA 509 with results of W1 V2. W1 (water penetration) is a range of 1-11 (1 being the lowest level of penetration).

@Navy1977 the cladding was 2008 and the stainless installation clips about 2013. Originally, we used 304 stainless but we upgraded to 316 stainless as the Hawaiian market only accepts 316, so we made that the standard. The nobility of 316 & aluminum (6063 extrusion alloy) are very close. You’re correct that more humidity with coastal areas and the salt in the air has a direct impact, but the reaction is extremely minimal. I mentioned the finish warranty but I didn’t mention our warranty on the material integrity is 50 years, non-prorated. I appreciate your question, it’s an important one for sure!

Because your siding isn’t your sheathing. If bugs get behind it on a build like this it’s not as big of deal. They probably also use a bug screen on the bottom to prevent as many bugs from getting through. Rockwool is also, well, made of rocks. Unless the bugs are gonna tunnel through rock, they’re not gonna touch the sheathing. Plus, the actual sheathing is fully air sealed.

What is the advantage of the metal hitch system vs making it out of a tough reinforced plastic? I would expect it to be cheaper and provide that thermal break. The standoffs could still be made of metal.
@greypoupon1300
@greypoupon1300 5 месяцев назад
Plastic would be cheaper on a per clip basis but plastic would not offer the same strength to hold heavier weight claddings plus it is combustible. With plastic if you went with something heavier on the wall you’d be using far more clips to hold it which would not just increase costs (labour time but material as well) but would also increase the number of penetrations in the wall ultimately decreasing performance. There are some plastic type products out there but you often have to put a massive screw in from the z-girt/hat channel through the clip and into the stud which creates a massive thermal bridge.

I could never live in an aluminum sided house because of this. I am in Florida some of out houses are with what is type of plaster board. It is actually concrete siding.
