Before Cortnee Vine there was Cheryl Salisbury. Before Sam Kerr there was Lisa De Vanna. Before Mackenzie Arnold there was Melissa Barbieri. All making Australian football history!
Helen Barrow’s documentary Never say Die Matildas (2008) follows the Australian Women’s football team through the highs and lows in their 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign.
In this clip the Matildas take on Canada in their final game of the group stage. Having won their first game against Ghana and drawn against Norway they only required a draw to make history as the first Australian team to make the Quarter Finals of a World Cup.
It was a tense 90 minutes with Australia falling behind twice before captain, Cheryl Salisbury, scored a stunner in the dying minutes to equalise and send Australia through.
