ProRes does not turn off sharpening and tone mapping. Apple Log does that. It's literally in their white paper. You could easily test this because you can shoot ProRes without Apple Log (the normal camera can do this), and you can shoot Apple Log without ProRes. Its been possible to shoot ProRes since the iPhone 13 Pro...why didn't we have this sharpening and tone mapping turned off since then? Direct quote from the Apple Log White Paper: "The Apple Log profile is a scene-referred encoding using a logarithmic curve and a wide color gamut. The purpose of using this type of profile is to best preserve video data at capture time, with minimal processing." ProRes is just a codec...it does provide slightly better quality because of the lack of inter-frame compression (only uses intra-frame compression). This also makes it easier to edit, as every frame is independent of other frames, so its less processor intensive.

Would you recommend filming in H.265 or pro ress ?

@@JROSS1998 if you have storage for ProRes, it can reduce some artifacts, useful if you are going to do any VFX over it, but if you are just going to throw a quick color grade on it and post it, h.265 is probably good enough. I personally think that ProRes 422 LT is a nice compromise. I find it is about half as big as 422 HQ, but quality is still very good. One last thing, if your computer is not too powerful, ProRes is easier to work with, because instead of having to say "to display this frame, I have to go back 4 frames, and then put together all the differences" (this is inter-frame compression), it just says "here is the frame you requested". h.265 is very good, but it is also very compressed and it is not as easy for computers to play it back, so when you are editing, you might get stutters with h.265.

@MaximoJoshua thanks a lot for your share. The last paragraph at your last reply is the point ! We ( me and my team ) tried a lot before this video to use only Apple Log without ProRes to avoid dealing with the huge size of data. We couldn’t achieve that because our computers and to be specific our Adobe couldn’t understand the video clips ! We could playback the video files within the player but once importing them at Premiere, lot of errors keep popping out ! Something like using HDR Dolby Vision at iPhone 12 Pro .. the H.W computer should support this codec to deal with !

That means that is not so good when your settings is display LUT on, Rec. 709 conversion Lut in the LUT selection, record LUT to clip is on and the colorspace tag is to Rec. 709?

How are you importing LUTs? I have the LUTs App but I can’t access the LUTs from my Files app

The app used here is Blackmagic. You can add luts that are stored in your Files system from there. What app are you using?

You can use a pro mist or a diffusion filter to reduce the digital sharpening or you can reduce the sharpening in editing softwares such as Adobe Premier Pro or Da Vinci Resolve.

Yeah what Steve said, although for DTM there’s not much to do except for not shoot in those higher contrast/lower light situations.

Hi guys can anyone help me I need to do a decision to buy some lens, short story I bought an iPhone 15 pro max for my wife she’s a manicurist just to use it for nail photography to her clients but I had a shocking surprise pictures are bad so about environment it’s a living room with a big window and 2 white lights one on celling and one on lamp 1200 lumens, problem with iPhone when we do pictures it’s picture everything defects everything example nails are perfect but hand skin looks bad in reality, iPhone show defects as well but if she make same picture with an old s10 Samsung quality of colours degrade a bit but hands get corrected and skin looks ok , do some 100 mm lens will solve my problem? Or some ideas pls? We need for close photography max 20 cm away from subject

The number one thing is to make sure you’re shooting RAW, and depending on the app that would be Apple ProRAW and confirm it’s setup to do the Max setting at 48MP. This of course is using the main 24mm camera/lens. And then, yeah add a telephoto or a macro to that and you’ll get good results. And if you’re in low light make sure to adjust the exposure manually, if you let it auto expose it will increase the noise. But using ProRAW then you can edit the photos in Lightroom or whatever app you prefer and they look great.

Maybe the answer is obvious, but why don’t you want to bake in a lut when using Apple log Pro res?

Because then you don’t have the ability to change the grade in post. You lose the flexibility of shooting log.

If you wouldn’t mind sharing some insight, I do have another question. I use Dehancer to edit clips on my iPhone, and when I import clips into the app, it auto converts Apple log footage to a rec. 709 colorspace. However, the colors are too intense for my liking, and I prefer the look of a LUT I actually bake into footage on the Black Magic Camera app. As far as having the ability to change the grade in post, would the Dehancer auto Apple Log conversion have more flexibility than the baked in LUT footage? Or would the flexibility be the same?

You have more flexibility using Dehancer b/c you’re working with the log footage then and you can dial in the look you want. And you can lower the intensity of the Rec 709 profile it uses, at least on the computer version. I’ve played with the mobile version but I don’t subscribe so I don’t have a lot of experience with it.
