Just find a reference point (grass) 2-4 inches behind the ball where you are intending your driver to bottom out. Look there and not at the ball. Slice will be gone and you’ll collect the ball on the way up. If you have a baby hook after just you drop your right foot back 1-2 inches it will work. Works for me! GL

3 to 5 mins is a good length for this. When other big youtubers are taking 10 plus mins to get the adds in its just long and drawn out and you lose the basic idea. Good stuff steve

I took this concept to the range yesterday and hit 10 driver shots either dead straight or slightly off center. It occurred to me that if this works with the driver it should work with all the other clubs, so I tried multiple irons and hybrids. All dead straight. This is what Mo Norman used to do but he never explained why. From his videos all he ever said is that's how he always did it. But I found that I must focus on a point about 4 inches directly behind the ball, place my club there before take away and continue looking at the spot throughout the entire swing. I never looked at the ball after setup, the club just went there completely squared. Anxious to see if I can repeat this. But, and here's the kicker - I must keep my left arm straight and my wrists cocked (lag) all the way back and through the swing. Thanks for this tip Steve.

Hi Steve. Thx for the video! I always enjoy your content. I’m finding what you’re explaining a little hard to understand. As I understand it, slices are caused by the face being open to the club path. What I’ve learned is that we need to square the face soon after starting the downswing while rotating through the ball. I think that the feeling you’re suggesting we should go for will definitely lead to an early release by dumping all the speed we’ve built up in the backswing well behind the ball. That would square the face and reduce slices, but the ball would go nowhere. Maybe I’m missing something. I used to slice like crazy and I learned to lessen it greatly in part by moving the ball a little further back in my stance and coming more from the inside. I mentioned squaring the face in the downswing, but this should just happen naturally if the grip is right (neutral to slightly strong). As far as club path, by moving the ball back a little (about 1 ball more towards the center of the stance), you’re contacting the ball more towards the bottom of the swing arc. That, together with a face more square to the club path (assuming a square swing path), should produce a straighter ball flight. For me it’s a 5 yard fade on my best shots. I just think that the feeling you talk about might lead to more frustration if implemented incorrectly. I think that early release together with over the top downswing and coming out of our posture to square the face is the number one killer of amateur golfers’ swings and this might lead to making it worse. Again, maybe I’m missing something. Please let me know what you think. Thx!

Thank you for this new explanation Steve. I still slice. I watch a lot of you tube videos. These say right foot slightly back, right shoulder slightly down. swing track is up at take away. But I could not yet learn that teaching of yours. I'm going to work on this. I just don't have an answer to this or not yet. I have handicap 7.2 so I can do it reasonably. greetings from the Netherlands.

Same exact idea, but the way I managed to really feel it, is to swing like I'm almost "pushing" the ball forward rather than actually hitting it sideways. It initially genuinely felt like I was swinging diagonally. I just had to keep my arms closer to my body, closing the face, and "push" my hands out as I released my upper body to keep it straight. This combined with a stronger grip eliminated a good 95% of that nasty, almost 90 degree angle slice I had. Now it's closer to a fade. For fairway woods, what helped the most was bringing the ball more in the middle of my stance, and making said stance a tiny bit narrower. I kept putting the ball almost as far forward as with the driver, which meant on release I was topping them.

Great way to get slicers to let their hands turn over , i have always thought that my old sliced driver was caused not by grip or stance and certainly not from coming over the top but purely through trying to guide the club down the target line and thus holding my hands off through impact , I cured my slice then pull then hook by simply allowing my my hands to go back down into the position i started and through , the main thought and feel being the action of bringing them down , straight down to the position of address . This caused a lot of very high faced shots until i opened my stance a half degree and put the ball to where i felt that the face was a degree past my low point , this got the ball into the middle and got me going at it like never before . In fairness it has taken years but i am and always will be a monkey with a typewriter ….

Oh my gosh, are you fricken kidding me. It works! I have this swing it looks good (in my launch monitor) looks really good. But, when I play and practice I’ll duck hook then slice and of course a beautiful draw down the middle. Just enough encouragement me to keep trying. Before I played today I hit about 50 balls. I went right to my driver and started fiddling with it. Then I remembered this video. I just went right to the time stamp 5:30 practice drill. “ How do you take this to the course”. I thought for sure I would cast my hands into the ground. No one else on the range so what the hell. I flushed it! Huh? Lucky strike, try again. Well you know I was killing it. I have a swing speed of about 85 I’m 62. I usually get 185 out of the driver when I hit it with a nice draw (in between my slice and pull hooks). I started this technique go on guess my club head speed …….. 92-101 from 85! Ball average 200 from launch monitor. Then I went out and played nine holes. I killed it! Unbelievable really. I noticed if I put a broken tee behind the ball about a club and a half I had a nice draw. Closer ball went straight. Zero slices! I have a Garmin watch and could review my roll out distances and I was average 230. That’s unbelievable for me. I didn’t loose a ball. Now if I could just putt! I have my practice on a launch monitor. I wish I could post my practice shots. I count 10 shots with my driver. I hit 3,5, and hybrid too. But I brush the ground with those and when i see the club brush in front of the ball. I step up swing away, I hit those nice too. I recorded about 48 shots total on launch monitor today. Man, I am so excited. All I can say is what the hell! Such a simple thing.
