And its for all the states, not just for red states that don’t have safe storage laws etc, so they try not to give advice that would be illegal in blue states
I am 72 and live alone. I put my fully ready pistol on my nightstand facing in a safe direction. If I have to get up at night, my friend comes with me. When I am awake , my M&P is on my hip where it stays until I take a shower or go to bed. Works for me!
@@Gunsncarsnstuff you do realize it would be a hazard anyways right? exploding ammunition is more dangerous if it is not in a chamber to halt the expansion as it is basically a fragmentation grenade at that point. Also people don't just spontaneously combust unless they are near magma and at that point it is self inflicted so that is just a stupid concern to bring up plus it has to be really hot to ignite the gunpowder in the bullet to fire so you can just throw the gun aside while you burn or try to take off the clothes that are on fire
I checked out when this guy told me NOT to store a revolver loaded. One of the prime advantages of a revolver is that you can keep it loaded without worrying about magazine complications. Keeping an automatic chamber empty for home defense is feasible because you need only cycle the action once and it's ready, but forcing yourself to fumble with a speed loader in a crisis is the height of foolishness.
One of my three guns is always either on my hip or within easy reach. I don't store them, I keep them loaded and available for instant use. A gun in a safe is the same as having no gun when danger comes knocking.
I keep my 45 acp loaded with one in the chamber right by my bed. I used to have a pushbutton lock safe under my bed when we had kids in the house, but as empty nester it’s just out and open right now.
Agree 100%... Borderline paranoid this fear of a fire which is at least as remote if not more-so, than having an intruder. If it's in a quality safe box the metal box should contain the round. One must consider the risk of being in the dark, under stress, no round in the chamber - will you REALLY be able to get the firearm loaded. Maybe yes maybe NO. Your life may depend on it... Round in the chamber! Always... AND in a quality steel lock-box. I think the fear of fire stuff is silly.
ALL of my guns are in one lockbox….A 2300 sq ft lockbox I like to call MY HOME. It has locks on all doors and windows. And when and if someone breaks into my “lockbox” I damn sure dont wanna fumble around with yet another lockbox before I can handle the situation.
I think this way too. However, question: When you go outside your lockbox to check the mail, water the lawn, tinker in the driveway, do you lock the doors behind you fully, as if you were leaving your property for groceries, etc.?
This is introducing far too many failure points during a high stress situation where any one failure can mean death of you or a family member. The real solution is while awake have your gun on you and when going to bed have it on your nightstand where you can just grab it because that's the only way you can be ready and reduce precious seconds to respond to a intruder. Just imagine crossing your house to go check on kids unarmed while there's one or more intruders in your home somewhere and then trying to open up a gun safe with adrenaline at max levels and worst of all now putting your children in the line of fire if the intruders shoot at you. While these videos are usually good advice, this one leaves way too many chances for the bad guys to gain upper hand and risk your family's lives.
My wife sleepwalks, to the extent that she can work doorhandles and has even gotten into and turned on the shower. The last thing I particularly need is for her to sleepwalk, grab a gun, and use it for whatever her dream is about. So I will keeo mine in the safe, where she has to do a lot more work to get to it, instead of out on the nightstand
That’s kinda like carrying a gun with one NOT in the chamber. In a panic situation you need access ASAP. Be smart about it. I am an empty nester so there are no kids in my house. So every gun is loaded. I understand the point of view but in an emergency and if your bedroom is upstairs and you kids room is downstairs you may need that gun sooner to save your kid. Just be smart when you have a gun
That's better said then the video in an emergency why would you check on family first, no offense I'd rather run into a situation armed rather than walking into a fight with nothing .

I totally agree. In a high stress situation, there’s always a few seconds of confusion/panic. Valuable second for you to repel an aggressor are lost when you have to fiddle with a box. To give me more time to respond, I’ve installed a high grade deadbolt that has extra length screws that go deep into the stud. I also have an alarm and a four legged alarm equipped with teeth. Additionally, Everyone in the family is trained in firearm safety and use. Now if I’m going out of town, I lock it in my large gun safe.
Sorry, I will never keep a self defense weapon without a round in the chamber whether in my home or on my person. My home protection guns are always safe from my kids but I will never lock a firearm that I need immediate access to.
Primary: rifle within arms reach with inserted (loaded) mag and empty chamber, safety selector in semi position. Secondary: pistol within arms reach with inserted (loaded) mag and loaded chamber. Safes are for locking your firearms when they are not in your possession. My family is definitely not gonna die because I couldn't get my gun into the fight fast enough.
Yeah, I'm sorry, but this all sounds like HORRIBLE ADVICE. In an emergency situation, where seconds count and adrenaline is pumping, you want to remove as many steps as possible in order to reach your firearm. Telling people to store their home defense weapon UNLOADED and LOCKED UP is just bad advice. At the very least, if you have it locked up, it should be with a round in the chamber. The "what if" concerning a fire and putting firefighters in harms way is not a good enough reason to add extra steps to the process of getting to your firearm. Unless you have children, I don't see any reason whatsoever for anybody to follow this advice. I sleep with my pistol on my nightstand, with a round in the chamber. I want to be able to pick up the pistol and be ready to fire right away if needed. I don't want to fumble around in the dark, trying to unlock my lockbox, then fumbling trying to insert a mag (or God forbid load a revolver), THEN rack a round into the chamber, when I can just easily do away with those steps and grab my gun and go to work on the idiot that thought it was a good idea to enter my home uninvited.
Great content as expected….. but 2 things struck me as a gun owner for over 55 years and retired from a risk management position. When I stage/stash a firearm I always 1) have one in the chamber locked and cocked with safety on, 2) pointed in a safe direction and 3)always in the holster which covers the trigger. To me the actual chance of a house fire is rather slim vs. a home invasion in many parts of the country. So rather be prepared for that and take my chances which might be right for some but not others. The other point is it’s only my wife at home and no kids so I stage my firearms without a biometric or lock box and out of sight. Strategic location and access is key….. And again, to each their own. 👍👍 Stay safe.
I agree . I live alone . I am ex-Leo - and have several staged , safely, and only I can get to them first and I have a dog . 1 block from a dangerous area that I used to patrol . I'm good . Lock box? -BS .
I usually agree with your videos, but I have to disagree on staging your gun without one in the chamber. Even if you use a biometric safe that is quick to open, you still will be at a disadvantage because it is already not on your person. So have to rack the slide will put you in a bigger disadvantage. Yes a fire might make it fire, but that is a risk I would be willing to take. I would just make sure your gun is pointing in your safe in a direction that is least likely to be a danger.
I keep mine in a safe by my bed with one in the chamber. My reasoning is. In the middle of the night if I go to grab it I will be half asleep. And may forget to rack the slide. Andbif I need it. I want to be able to just point aim and shoot. And not hear. Click.

if there's a fire and I'm evacuating, the guns already in my hand. I sleep with my head on my pillow and I'm looking down the hallway and my auto is under my pillow
I prefer to keep my gun on my hip in a holster at all times around the house when I am awake. At night, it's holstered on the nightstand. We have no kids in our home.
Staging a firearm for protection means putting somewhere accessable, available and appropriate for the task. That will take into account who you live with and your situation, but does not mean it's locked away in almost any circumstance. For me, it means it's within arms reach at all times, it's loaded and ready to use.
" Staging " Wow you've never apparently had someone break into your house at 1:00 AM if so you would throw the lock box out with the bathwater ! A hammer locked in the shed can't drive a nail..
The sense I would think would be to keep unauthorized persons from accessing the firearm Ie kids and yes some states do require you lock up your handgun
Florida, notorious for home invasion's, requires a much different approach to firearm staging readiness for pistols and rifles. Waking up after someone has already gained surprised entrance while asleep, it may be too late to be chambering a round that may cause a malfunction during the manipulation. I can't imagine fumbling around trying to use a biometric safe that has as much of chance of failing as every electronic device I've ever owned has done or spinning that last dial number on my safe to retrieve an unloaded pistol or rifle. I somehow sleep much better at night with my AR mounted next to the bed on a Vertical Gun Rack with a round in the chamber and my pistol on the nightstand. I really want to have to do 2 things should it be necessary, identify a target and flip the safety just before firing. This video was interesting to see how others approach these issues.
Our phones not recognizing our finger print immediately since most of us lock our phones with a finger print should be the exact reason we dont use bio security.
Ft. Knox and Shotlock sell steel boxes for firearms that use a mechanical simplex lock. I use one on my bedside nightstand. I stage it with the box actually open when I go to bed. This allows me instant access to my firearm. If I am leaving the home, the box is closed and locked. I'll never trust any electronic or biometric lock with my life.
One aspect that isn’t covered a lot in these types of videos is fortifications to our house to slow the bad guys down to buy you time in minutes vs seconds. Security doors and windows. Alarm systems, motion detector lights, 6ft high fencing with locking gates; all these things slows the bad guy down and alert you so you have more time to get into a defensive position. By the time the bad guy is in the house you only have seconds at best, I’d rather have minutes. Then calculate or estimate how much time you think it takes for the bad guy to get through your lines of defense. Another thing if you have minutes your stress level will be much lower and you will be able to think more clearly to work your plan and put yourself in a offensive position rather then a defensive position and or most likely a combination of both. The best thing is keep the bad guy outside your house if all possible.
Yes, thats my number 1 concern with a proper form of defense that i always try and tell people about instead of hyperfocusing on the right gun safe, or the right gun.. having more time means less to worry about when you have to do things like get to your firearm or go rally the family and dog
I was raised with loaded guns in the house...I raised my kids with loaded guns in the house...my grandkids are being raised with loaded guns in the house...instruction, training, continued education, yes it takes time out of your life...I have a fire extinguisher in 5 rooms as well.
All members of my household are allowed access and use to my firearms therefore I don’t need to lock my firearms away. I keep them all chambered and in a holster. I keep my semiauto rifle chambered on a rack w/safety on.
Whereas I realize the use of a lockbox, I am having reservations because, In a real emergency, I wouldn't have time to go find my keys & doubt whomever is wishing harm, would allow one to go unlock their tool. I often think of my lockbox & what it would take to access in a emergency & I personally feel that all these "proper storage law's" are putting people in harms way by mandating a firearm be locked up. No would be robber or murderer will allow one to go retreated their firearm.
I tend to agree with you. Perhaps I'm misinterpreting this video...as easy as some lockboxes may be to access, if it's 3am and I'm awoken by a home intrusion event, I don't want to have to put my thumbprint or whatever on my lockbox to access my pistol. I just would reach over to my nightstand and grab my chambered and holstered gun and be ready to work. Never even thought about a house fire event. Would be curious to know house fires per year vs home intrusions per year.

I simply don't trust lockboxes to function properly when needed. Safe storage laws are ridiculous. I'll keep mine loaded and within reach. My Long guns are placed around my home out of sight but readily available at a moments notice.
Precisely. Concealed but easy to access is the best. Fumbling with a storage device... or a safe(!!!), when it's go-time and you have seconds is ridiculous. And if you have children, simply keep the ammo/magazine separate and hidden, but also easily and quickly accessible. Get creative... and practice!
I second that, Have seen plenty of biometric failures when things like sweat and panic are involved. I have a key safe for my rifle, and when im not carrying im sleeping with it.
I had a lock box in my Truck when I was a longhaul driver and the keypad was to fiddlely where some times it would work other times it would not then it just stopped working I was glad I had the key with me otherwise 1k in cash and my Glock would have been as good as not having them

For storing, I understand leaving the mag out and no round chambered. If you have to leave hour home in a hurry because of a fire, it's the safest way. For the gun I keep in my nightstand inside a lock box, I want it ready to go in case I need it, I mean loaded, with a round chambered and the safety off. I assume if I'm going to be taken by surprise, in the middle of my sleep, while I'm most vulnerable, I won't have a lot of precision (or time) to start inserting a mag and racking the slide... but that's just me.

As a fire/medic I completely disagree with this. Feel free to keep your firearm loaded with one in the chamber. When we enter buildings fully engulfed we play a game of chance. The theory that you have one loaded pistol, that pistol has a round chambered, that barrel happens to be pointed in the direction of a first responders fighting the fire, the fire is burning hot enough in that area to detonate the round, and if all of this is true then that round could possibly hit the firefighter, is a wild gamble on a very LOW chance. Meanwhile, the idea that an intruder breaks in, you need to get to your gun quickly so you grab it and rack, unintentionally inducing a malfunction, is far more likely. Everyone has their opinions. Don't use pur safety as an excuse. What matters to us most is YOUR life. That's why we do what we do. Please don't limit your ability to protect yourself on our behalf.
As a fellow firefighter, I fully agree with you. Not storing a gun with a round in the chamber on the off chance you MIGHT hurt a firefighter is like telling someone not to drive a car because you MIGHT get into an accident and hurt someone. The benefit far outweighs the risk.
I stage my pistol in my holster on my hip when I’m home. So let me get this straight if someone boots your door you must get to your safe, open it and chamber a round before you’re able to use it. The nice part is the criminal will be able to help you with all that because I imagine by then he will be standing right there next to you.
I have handguns all around the house fully loaded with a round in the chamber. They are inside holsters so nothing can activate the trigger, they are pointed in a safe direction that if it were to go off would not travel through where anyone is likely to be.
When the gun heats up, the round in the chamber will fire and you have no idea where the fire department or your neighbors, et all may be. What walls will still be standing or some of the things it can go through.
@@357magstreet9 Of my eleven closest relatives, two have lost their homes in fires. My Mom's house burned down in ~1935 from a candle + curtain incident, and my cousin died when his water heater failed and burned his home in ~1995. I have never had a relative murdered that I'm aware of.
Watching ASP, USCCW and many other videos on YT channels, has convinced me of the need to have my firearm within immediate reach, loaded, and with one in the chamber, ready to go! Having said that, ASP and USCCW videos specifically, have disabused me of several previously held notions about the law (regarding firearms), and proper conduct of those carrying concealed. These folks are providing CC users a priceless, relevant, real-world education!👍
There is a loaded firearm in every room of my house unless a child is visiting. Some rooms have more than one. Loaded and in arms reach or you might as well have none.
Man I wish I had hundreds of dollars to blow to purchase biometric lock boxes for all my firearms around my house. Guess I'll just have to stick with keeping them hidden in weird places.

I live in a 5th wheeler its just my dog and I. I have three guns staged they are locked and cocked. The two pistols are in a holster and the shotgun is on safe in a closet. They are put of sight but they aren’t in lock boxes. If you have ever been in a 5th wheeler you know how small they are you can see the front door from every angle of the camper. So if i had to unlock a box i would be dead. And i dont let people visit me am I wrong for this?
By the time I was 4 years old, there wasn't a safe or lock in the house that I couldn't open, I was facinated with locks at a very young age and I'm sure I'm not alone.
When I was growing up our guns were never locked up, ammo was stored with guns and by the time I could reach high enough it gun safety had already been ingrained in me. My dad was serious about it and he made me serious.
@@ptaylor4923 This. There was no place I couldn't break into in our house, but my parents ingrained safety into me so to this day I don't really think it was a problem that I could get to my dad's handgun when I was 10-12.
Thats why my Grandfather and Father taught us little kids about firearms safety. They taught us to respect firearms and took away the curiosity factor by teaching us. We grew up shooting our .22 single shot rifles and learning to hunt and to protect and defend ourselves. We never touched our parents firearms even though they were loaded and staged in the home because we weren't stupid.
Depends on the state. I have no children living with me so I have my nightstand pistol loaded but without one being chambered. I can quickly grab it in the dark (if needed) and rack it to load it. I train doing this extensively.
Same here. I’ve always kept a round in the chamber but never thought about fire. When I get home I’ll take the round out of the chamber and have to rethink my process. I prefer to just pick it up and know it’s completely ready to go, but safety for firefighters is a good point

Iam so glad that my children are adults & are living elsewhere because I had a headache after listening but these videos are informative however it is just me & my wife so my firearm ( Butch ) is with me always 😀

Seems like stopping to load a revolver or fiddle with a safe and racking a slide is a way to ensure you can’t fight back. What good is your gun if it’s unloaded or inaccessible in a sudden event? I see your points, do you see mine?
Sorry bud but alot of this info is not a really good idea if you need to use your firearm in an emergency half asleep stumbling in the dark trying to quickly defend yourself or your family from a deadly threat in your home more than likely within 20ft of your exact position. Personally I lock my firearms in a safe except the one on my person if someones kids are in the house, and at night it will be within my reach if it is not directly on me . My experience that it is best if you own a firearm and have young children to take them to the range with you and teach them how to properly use a firearm and maintain it . Young children knowing first hand the saftey rules and also the first hand experience of the damage a firearm can inflict on inanimate objects such as wood, drywall, sheet metal, steel, and if possible even meat can result in them having more respectful for the firearm(s) . Hiding firearms from children just causes curiosity which can lead to an incident which is more the likely life threatening and could have been prevented by just teaching everyone in your household proper firearm etiquette.
I have watched quite a few videos of Kevin's, and almost always agree with what's being taught. As I recall, in most of them, he's said that you have to take into account your local and state laws regarding firearms. And also he usually says something like you have to do what's right for you and your situation. Having said that, I am a middle-aged woman living with only my 120# burglar alarm. I intend to keep mine close at hand, not locked away. I'm not as experienced as I think a lot of people who've commented here are, so I feel the need to just be able to grab and shoot. No one whom I let in to my house will need to know where I keep them.
In a lockbox, with trigger lock on it. No magazine in it. Empty magazine on the other side of the house in the basement. With box of ammo in the trunk of the car parked out on the street. Sounds like a plan.
My father in-law was a Vietnam vet. 3x purple heart recipient and a retired sheriff. He passed away and my wife and I had to empty his house and more her mother to a new house. He had guns stored all over the house. Every corner an every room. I recall pulling down a laundry basket in the laundry room and finding a snub nose .38 that almost hit me on the head. If nothing else, he was prepared to bring the pain if someone broke into his house.
Great points! There are plenty of right ways of staging a firearm and I believe your concepts definitely explain and assist in avoiding the wrong ways of staging a firearm. Many people are not excited about buying safes with their new gun and the location they would stage, but when they do, the weight and peace of mind is well worth it. Its pretty important for me to always have a firearm on my person. if its not on my person, loaded not ready (unchambered), holstered, in a locked controlled location, and able to reach it given different circumstances. Well, it’s just me and my lady, she has her gun staged where she wants it, and I have my guns staged in the house without a lockbox but it is in a safety plus we don’t have kids the only time I move them is when we have visitors. Trust me you have your gun all in a lockbox loaded or unloaded and somebody comes crashing through your front or back door you won’t have time to get to that gun and get ready to get into the fight. I keep my Ruger Compact 9 in the córner crack of my couch, live ammo with one up with the safety on in its holsters, then I keep my Ruger on the bedroom dresser one in the chamber with the safety on, and I keep my Bersa Thunder in my kitchen in the córner slot of the kitchen counter mounted to the wall. Did it for years and again, nobody comes to our house like that so their safe plus my lady os gun savvy so I don’t have to worry about her, that’s just my setup tho, always ready for action and have a gun in every room of my house ready for action
I am presently in the process of acquiring my very first gun purchasing permit. The question of where/how to safely stage a gun for home protection has been heavy on my mind. This video has been very helpful and has greatly eased my worries. Thank you so much. 😄
Please explain how, with a REVOLVER, having rounds in the cylinder can shoot if the house is on fire? For a revolver I don't see how that is different from loose ammo? For home protection there is no way I would want to require an extra 10 or 15 seconds to load the gun if somebody just broke into my house. Thanks
I wear mine in a holster from the time that I get up until I go to bed. That's the best form of staging that I'm aware of. Also, I doubt that my feline Daughters even know what is on my hip. They just know that it smells bad (gun oil).
It can vary based on your individual situation, Eric. For some who have no kids in their house having multiple safes may not be a need. For people who have kids, quick access safes would be a good idea so that your firearm is quickly accessible but still secure.
I've always had the opinion that if you have kids and guns ..you should train them too..I've got several uscca certificates of training and have passed that training on to my kids
@@kayakbob5715that’s true, YOUR kids should be taught early. But you may have other people’s kids in your home too (sleepovers, parties, just hanging out) and obviously it’s not appropriate to have a safety talk with somebody else’s kid. A quick-access safe takes all that out of the equation.

I want to start by saying that I watch this channel a lot and I appreciate the content. That being said, I was not with you on this video. If you live in a state that regulates how you can defend your home and family, LEAVE!! As to some other points in this video, I have to disagree. It’s the middle of the night and you are going to go to your kids room? You may very well be leading them there and then you figure the best place for a potential firefight is next to your kids? Also, you don’t get to choose when or where an attack is going to happen. That’s why you should have a gun on you or within arms length and ready to rock n’ roll. In a home invasion things happen very fast and you may be still half asleep and it may be dark so the last thing I want to do is fiddle with a lockbox, and load a pistol or rifle. Just my opinion, but I imagine there’s a few people out there that would have a similar mindset.
If your gun is locked up you dont have a self defense tool, you have a novelty item that's useless in your time of need. People honestly believe a person trying to hurt you or your family will announce themselves with time to spare for you to go unlock a gun a come back.
Are you kidding me? .. I stage one of my pistols in a holster stuck to the siderail of my bed, loaded, ready to go where I can get it instantly. My wife has the very same on her side of the bed too. Nobody but myself or my wife are going to get to our guns and our guns are ready for action at ALL times .. period.

I’m 50 years old. My dad kept guns everywhere in the house to include the pantry/kitchen cabinet with the cereal. I still do the same. We didn’t mess with them without permission and grew up shooting them. People need to raise their kids better
We stage revolvers as we are wheel addicts. Actually hadn't thought of the house fire aspect, but it does make sense. Seems that leaving the cyl. empty under the hammer or leaving the wheel open (if the storage box or area has enough room) would take care of that danger. We're blessed in that our kids and grandkids are all grown. When folks come over to the house--whether they bring children or not--we simply lock the bedroom/office doors where the firearms are stored. Some adults are like kids! Silly as it seems to some, I carry even at home. If they made PJ's with holsters, I'd probably sleep with it.

I've been watching these videos for a bit now and I've seen a few where these nerds give terrible advice. This video is no exception. You want your weapon ready to go, you don't want to take seconds to load and rack rounds.
Everything he’s saying about safety tips, he’s right as a new gun owner I didn’t watch videos about safety but my Instincts told me that’s the best way to be safe and my family and also be quick for emergency, the only thing I Disagree is where he says to store your gun in the kids room, I mean it sounds logical but I wouldn’t be able to sleep, knowing there’s a lethal weapon in my son or daughter bedroom, kids are always curious and if somehow they can manage to open it that’s nightmare, but that’s just my opinion, I’m not saying, Listen to me , everybody is entitled to do what’s best for their families
He's right, for him. You are also correct in how you stage your own firearms. I choose to stage mine with my own safety and the safety of those I love as the priority. This means they're ready to go, with no locks potentially denying me access to them. I leave them loaded because if I need one, I need it now. I would also like to not make any "I'm over here and loading my gun" noises. I don't know what your walls are made of but mine aren't bulletproof. I don't want to tell an intruder which walls to start shooting thru to kill the homeowner that just loaded his gun.
Kevin, I had hoped this presentation would go in a different direction. I live alone in Georgia. There are no safe storage laws in Georgia because it is a state that supports the Second Amendment. Yet, you ask that I stage a firearm in a lock box without a round in the chamber. This is a recipe for giving the criminal an advantage. I am certain that the criminal will be carrying with a round in the chamber. Your recommendations would leave me unlocking the box, obtaining my firearm, and putting rounds in the firearm. I don't use semi-autos for defense. I use reliable revolvers. Your approach gives me at least a 5 second disadvantage. I believe in keeping defensive weapons in various locations, readily accessible, fully loaded. If someone gets to my firearms, they have already broken the law by entering my house unless they are my two or three close friends who are already carrying. My firearms are stored safely, legally, and with ready access when I need them. I am appalled that USCCA would give advice that delays a response to an attack. If you had conditioned your comments to include only people with others who are not qualified to handle the weapon living in the home, I would not have this issue. But, you provide this as a blanket approach for everyone. I think it is detrimental to personal safety. You may understand that I am not a supporter of this kind of information. Please revise your recommendations to reflect those of us who live alone.
It's not just people who live alone. Anybody who lives in a situation with only "safe" adults, no kids and no "untrustworthy" adults, can make very different choices than people with kids in the house.

It’s incredibly easy to properly load a revolver with the cylinder lined up with the barrel empty for carry and for storage. Then for use, single action or double action will cause the cylinder to rotate into position and ready to fire.
Question, if you might be responsible if someone gets hold of your gun what’s the difference legally between someone coming into your house and stealing an unsecured gun and someone stealing a small gun safe containing your gun and removing the gun later and using it
My buddy keeps his pistol unchambered and no mag in it. The pistol is in a combination lock box in his room. The mag is in the silverware drawer. The rounds are scattered about throughout the house in coffee cans and sugar bowls.

4:20 Yeah, you're crazy. Countless customer complaints about all brands and levels of lockboxes being able to be defeated by children. In some cases simply by prying or by fiddling with combinations. Best out of their reach and sight! Find a spot on the way to their room or to your panic room. Alternately, keep it where you spend most of your time (in addition to the bedroom), like a home office, or the kitchen.

I don't have a BOX. But I live alone! Owning only ONE firearm at the moment, it's with me almost 24/7! If I'm awake throughout the day, it's on my HIP. If I go to bathroom, it comes off my hip (weighs pants down like I got a ton of bricks in my pocket), for temporary staging, on the counter pointing away from me. It's only there long enough to handle my bsns, secure my pants, wash my hands, than I return the firearm to my hip and go about my day! If I take a shower, same thing, but barrel is pointing towards door sitting on counter near sink,, so if I have to grab it in a hurry, it's already pointing where I'm likely going to expect the trouble. For when I sleep. I don't put it under the pillow like many do. I used to put it on side of bed against the wall so my body was blocking it, but a few times, it's been pushed over the edge, and fallen into the space between bed and wall, and it's too risky to accidently grab or push the trigger, trying to recover it from behind the mattress! I don't want it accidentally going off, recovering it, whether I'm grabbing it in middle of night during emergency, or freshly waking up in the morning and returning it to my belt. Now it goes on a nightstand near my bed, arms length. But becuase I've discovered dust bunnies and crawlers in the barrel once or twice, I've sense been putting it on that nightstand with clip removed, and slide locked open! Every morning, i check it before inserting clip, and releasing slide action. Usually after I check it and make sure it appears clean, I release the action first, then insert clip, and it remains clear, no HOT round. IF i wake up to a disturbing noise, which one time a roommate showed up, who's hardly ever here, but I woke to sound of heavy steps coming up my stairs, I grabbed my firearm, inserted clip and released the action all in one motion, which chambers the round as the action closes, and it has a very loud SNAP sound (very distinguishing), and as I yelled "Who goes there" before I can finish my question, it was my roommate announcing himself, who knows I have the firearm... so he knew what the sound was. Only time I had go that length, and I'd say it was a swift reaction by myself! He hardly stops by... but that's another story! Mostly I live alone, and I keep my bedroom door closed/locked, when I go to sleep (He has another room he stays in, in my home, when he does come by), whether or not he stops by, or a stranger, they'd have to get into my bedroom to find my firearm on the nightstand. But it is left there without clip, and left open, so I'm not worried! Good information though! Thanks!
The lock box is for when you're not home, but your firearm is. I keep mine staged on my person with one in the pipe. When I go to bed, it's in the same condition, one in the pipe and firearm in the holster. My kids are adults who know my firearms are hot.
I kept a gun as you described in a lock box in my sons room. My son and his friend one day saw this box containing the gun and it wound up in my sons friends backpack as he went to school. He and his friends were intrigued about the discovery of this treasure chest. All of the gun safety was talk to my son but that went out the window when his friends came to play in his room. I wonder …. Did I make the story up or could something like it possibly be true. Food for thought. Rethink what you do and how you do it.
I personally wouldn't keep one in my daughters room as its just down the hall and my nightstand is quicker access, but with what you said this really does come down to firearm safety and any good lock box wont be able to be easily accessed anyways. Mines like a mini gun safe.... you'd need to use the metal shop and a good bit of time to get into it without being caught lol.
Either you made this story up or you're a "weak link" who shouldn't have access to a gun. I wonder ... A gun safety talk is useless if it's just talk. Until you put a high-powered firearm in his hands and stand behind him to keep him from falling when he pulls the trigger, your child will not understand the danger. But after you catch him when he thought he was going to fall over backward, he'll know and remember forever. After that is a good time to teach him how to keep his cool and make a casual exit if one of his friends ever pulls out a gun to show it off. You can do this FOR your child or you can let him/her learn from video games and television. It's all a part of extending the life of your child. Storing a gun in your child's bedroom is foolish unless that's where you sleep.
Your points are valid. I have a purpose built "book" in my living room. its surrounded by about 30 other books on the shelf. If someone tryings kicking down the door, that gun is going to come out in under 5 seconds, ready to fire. My sons are 12 and 11. They are very familiar with firearms, and firearms safety. They know not to touch that book.
Bro, that is a HUGE mistake! My dad kept loaded guns in his nightstand and elsewhere around the house. (there were no real gun safes back then) You think when he left the house as a curious 7 or 8 year old boy I wasn't in that nightstand in 10 seconds?!! Looking back I can't believe I didn't blow my own head off. I picked up the guns and pointed them around, I was nervous and scared but excited as well. Please think twice about this strategy anyone who reads this. NEVER ASSUME because you told your kids not to do something, they will never do it.
I keep my revolver loaded but I use the "cowboy load". If you have never heard of it, you arrange the cylinder so ther is no round in front of the firing pin. This only gives you a 5 shot load but it is safe in case of fire and I actually carry it that way in my holster on my farm. If the revolver happens to fall out of the holster, it won't fire by jarring the firing pin.

I feel the need to disagree with most of the content of this video. I understand and appreciate the intent (legality) of it all and the intentions behind storing one's firearms safely is understood but, there's no damn way I'm going to be limiting myself to being able to instantly access my firearm in the event I need to utilize such. The bad guy kicking in my door is not going to wait for me to get a hold of my firearm and get it ready for use because he wants it to be a fair fight. I'm certainly going to do what I can to give myself as much of an "unfair" advantage as I can against any would be invader. I sincerely hope I never have to make that decision however. Just sayin.
Regarding 4:20, storing a locking gun box in a child's room is a really bad idea. Children are curious and will find it in their room and may mistakenly think that it is a play thing. Instead put the locking gun box inside the Safe Room in your home. The Safe Room should be the defensive fortress in your home rather than the children's room.
They used to keep a gun above the fire place, over the door, by the bed, etc. Precisely to have quick access to them. "But they didn't have fast open safes!" You say! No, I answer. They put it out of reach of children unwise enough to misuse the tool, and taught everyone else how to wisely handle it by the time they could reach it. Have a cabinet for storage. Stage out of sight and reach of small children, and raise your kids so it doesn't matter by the time they are big enough to reach the tool.
