I have been playing guitar for the past 5-6 years. I've taken lots of theory courses during that time. I discovered your channel last Friday and have been watching your videos all weekend. In those three days I learned more about the fret board then in the previous 5-6 years. Thank you, you are a great teacher
I’ve been playing guitar for almost 40 years and I’ve never really understood the caged system, I’m sure no-one ever talked about it in the 80s!! I’m a multi instrumentalist and having switched to bass as my main instrument in my 20s I have a good understanding of octaves and R-3-5 on the E,A,D and G strings, but I have never made the connection with the guitar chords and shapes until now. I’ve mostly been a cowboy or E and A shape barre chords kinda gal but now I actually want to learn the caged system properly! Thank you Ricky, I’ll be checking out your other videos now. Oh and none of this kay-po nonsense! Don’t we Brits say ‘cappo’ as it’s closer to the Italian? And therefore accurate 😂
This lesson is the one that made the caged system click for me. I've been trying to get my head round it for nearly a year watching Brett Pappa, Guthrie Trapp, Jack Ruch and practicing diligently. My playing has improved so much but I was still not confident in my understanding of the system. This lesson is the one that made it "click" finally and I can't thank you enough. You have also got me right into theory too!! The sign of a natural teacher if there ever was one!! Nice one mate! 🎵😁😁🎵🎶
I truly understand. Facebook is a mixed bag of emotions for me too! Love my group and guitar stuff. Hate the random politics and overthinking opinions. It’s worth joining though…disposable profile should do it! Hehe
Edgar Allen (Ca)Poe I get it haha us Americans cannot use proper english! We are all Mutts in the sense of the word- Tomato Tomotto- love your lessons you and Brian Kelly are the best on the net!!!
Dude this is brilliant. I am starting to understand it and thank the good lord you flipped it around. The mirror image on the other videos (referred to in the book) was melting my brain! This is the best and you are a fantastic teacher!
Ricky, you're simply the best! Out of all of the guitar sensei's on Facebook, Ive gained the most from your lessons. Your cycle of thirds is the one that just connected so much stuff for me. I'm thinking that your book would be a really smart buy for me.
Great lesson, thanks Ricky. As a beginner, you lost me a bit but I'll get there! Thanks also for the PDF. I'm going to buy your book as soon as I am next in the UK.
There’s A LOT to unpack in this lesson. Bookmark it and come back again once you’ve conquered what you learned from it. Don’t eat the whole elephant! Chop it into chunks!
I got pretty bored with the CAGED workouts over the years but your "CAGED OCTAVES" have me interested again. I am getting a fresh look at the system and a renewed perspective on the pentatonics because of the approach you have showed us. The patterns linking everything together are awesome. Is it possible I could finally get past some of my self imposed barriers? Ya never know.
If you say capo like that in America, YOU're saying it wrong! LoL! And when you're here, YOU have the accent! Great lesson, Brother. I wish I had known this while learning over a half-century ago.
Brother if I indeed said capo the way you do in Michigan they would definitely give me funny looks. But for shits and giggles I might just try it next time🤣😂😅
That's the beauty of RU-vid. Rewind, slow down, come back to it later. If I talk slow folks say it's too slow. Too slow too fast. I can't win. I do the best I can providing free lessons. My book is NOT a course. This lesson may be too much too soon for you.
I must be as dumb as a rock but I see nothing musical about the system. Academically, I get it but that’s it. Unless you memorize the fretboard there’s no freakin’ way you can compute the patterns on the fly musically. Oh well….
You kind of answered yourself there...Memorize the fretboard. The fretboard is the territory we MUST know. Not just patches and habitual playing areas. This is ONE aspect of CAGED. It ties in with triads. It's a layer of understanding amongst many that helps connects different concepts. CAGED isn't just chords either. It's a navigation tool to find explicit notes that sound great on top of chords to create tension/release ON THE FLY. Don't give up on it! I'm guessing you know your box 1 minor pentatonic. Watch this to see the utility of CAGED in action. ru-vid.comv7D2_pOwceg
Just joined the fraternity and all the information in this video IS worth its wait in gold but….the jumping and glitchy editing is so off putting and makes it harder to digest the gold being delivered. Please don’t go down the road of following so called trendy “edgy” editing!
