Never Thought He'd Be Homeless in Hollywood

Brent worked most of his life as a law clerk. After he lost his job, Brent lost his place to stay, and then he blew the engine on his truck. Brent never thought he'd be homeless on the streets of Los Angeles. Brent looks for work, but no one wants to hire a senior.
Ageism is a severe roadblock to employment. Brent is 61 years-old. He says employers love his resume. He does great on the interview call, but when Brent shows up for the in-person interview, and they see that he's older, he never gets the job.
Brent shares the challenges of personal hygiene. He's able to take a shower once a week. Brent says the second biggest challenge they face is keeping their phones charged. He used to use the library because of CONVID-19, but now everything is closed.
Coronavirus has hurt and helped homeless people. Once businesses and restaurants shut down, there was no place for homeless people to use the bathroom or get water. The plus side is police have, for the most part, left homeless people alone. Usually, police force homeless people to move frequently. When a homeless person has to spend most of the day every day trying to find a new safe place to sleep, it makes it harder for them to get off the streets.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

It would be unreasonable for us to post a GoFundMe for every interview. If it’s safe, and the person wants it, we’ll add one. Just to be clear, unless there is a regular income, a GoFundMe will not help a person get out of homelessness.

Thought I would have a job by May graduation. It took me 450+ applications and 12 months of applying to nearly every industry to finally land a job in...sales. During 2 awful years of that, I started asking marketing and data analytics questions about the incoming sales. I eventually taught myself SQL/Python and am now a data science analyst director. We shouldn't judge anyone,who are we to judge. This world would be a better place if we helped each other more,if we built each other up. We need to take action. We need to educate people,help people understand more. Saying that some people genuinely don't care,if it doesn't affect them,why should they care. That's some people's attitudes,not everyone's. We need to make a stand,we need politicians that care. I would say we the small people need to do something & we do. But we need to make the bigger people listen. I mean we could do peaceful protests,let's all start playing a role. If we all just done something surely we could make people listen. It's so heartbreaking to see these people on the street. I am in England,it's like they try to hide our homeless people,move them on.out of sight out of mind. I really want to help,I have nearly been made homeless a few times,because of this bedroom tax & rent arrears. It's crazy. Right I am going to listen to the rest of this. Hope everyone is doing well&staying safe. Sending big hugs&loves to all,takecare,xx

I couldn’t agree more. I honestly don’t know how anyone can make it without family support. I’ve taken in several teens over the last couple years to try to help them. The problem is not having family or not, like Mary Jenkins said, your family can be poor and unable to help you or they can be violent and mean. The problem is not enough social resources against poverty to help and to give a chance to poor people to be able to achieve the same level of comfort as those who began with richer families and who have more opportunities from that position already have.

I was thinking/dreaming about a project that you build a smaller lighter version of the teardrop trailer. But make it so that you could pull it with a bike, manpower, or a vehicle. Be a you build two and get one system. Then you could sell the other one to pay for the supplies. I know it’s not an ideal solution. But it beats a tent or the sidewalk. A locking door would perhaps allow a little rest and security. And by selling one they would then become less of an eyesore or be recognizable with being homeless. A roof over your head no matter how humble gives hope. I just wish more could be done in a practical way.

Sounds like you have no clue about anything regarding the homeless lmao People need to survive on the street and most are forced to turn to less than legal means to somehow stay alive, it has nothing to do with drug dealing being "bad" it's about survival and people will do what they need to do, if you think it's somehow not true a lot of homeless may eventually turn to illegal means after they've been on the streets for years and years you're obviously naive as shit lmao And of course that only accounts for a few people, some stay true to their morality and that in itself gives them a reason to live.

I finally asked someone what was the significance of the red circle and a women told me it indicated that I was over 50.

If California lowered the incredibly high tax rates businesses have to pay to stay in business. The highest of any State mind you. they could lower prices or at least not have to raise them as often. The higher the taxes go the more businesses have to pass them onto the consumer or risk becoming homeless as well.
@danbuchner28
@danbuchner28 4 года назад
Rent is determined by the free market, not any state. Also, anyone can freely choose to live in any state they wish. It just so happens that California is one of the most expensive states in the U.S., with very high taxes also.

The speculators have found that they make their money on the rising price of property -- so they leave them vacant. Renting is such a hassle.
@jackandblaze5956
@jackandblaze5956 4 года назад
@@humboldthammer Exactly spot on. It's about time somebody said it and that's the damn truth. There are vacant investment properties all over LA county. If you're an investor you can write off all the property taxes (which aren't high in California btw), but if you're just a homeowner you can't. Little by little more homeowners get pushed out as prices rise due to investors. Some people who own dozens or hundreds of Airbnb's are hurting right now but that won't last long.

what an intelligent guy - someone needs to employ him and do themselves a favor
@Gitfidlpickr
@Gitfidlpickr 4 года назад
In California .. in order for someone to employ him they need to pay Workman's Comp in advance and have his salary in the bank in advance and they need to pay a huge fine if they do not have the money to pay him (labor board). They need to have $2.5 in the bank for every $1 paid to an employee (including health care plan). So businesses closed by COVID 19 cannot employ until their cash flow comes back. Businesses destroyed by riots need to have the money to repair all the damage and then buy all new inventory to sell (and then sell a lot of it) before they have the bank roll to hire employees. (and they need to pay rent per sq ft, electric and lights, and .. personal needs like lunch area and bathroom) It is going to be a while (if ever)
