I wish I had seen this video a few weeks ago. I injured my sciatic nerve badly and had to undergo an MRI due to unbearable pain. The pressure of the treatment seemed effective at first, but later it caused me a lot of pain. Thank you for this informative video. I am truly interested in your channel and will keep following it.
First, I am so sorry you ended up in more pain and lots of medical carry-on! Love Will's videos because they are so useful and so clear! You might want to seriously consider buying the book. I just got mine, and am very happy to have a print version of much of the information he uses to underlie his videos. Lots of exercises, too!
I'm so sorry to hear about your injury and the pain the pressure gun caused - I hope my video can help to prevent further issues as the result of pressure gun use to help you avoid pain - I wish you all the best in your recovery also!
@@hollish196 hi there - I just wanted to say a big thank you for purchasing my book - it is great to hear you have found it helpful! Wishing you all the best :)
Thanks for your guidance! I’m 63, in good health, except I have plantar fasciitis. I was just about to treat my heel with my massage gun. So glad I watched your video first.
Six - add the neck - on the sides and front especially! And seven - face? I can't even imagine anyone doing that, and I hope people will avoid injuring themselves! Love your videos - very, very informative!
Yep, great video. I understand that At high speeds it could damage your capillaries, the tiny blood vessels present everywhere in your body. But at low speed equivalent to soft tapping with finger tips should be safe ?
that is not that easy, there are muscles in these areas and sometimes it does work, to use gut, but know exactly where and with what pressure and heads.
Bob and Brad also have a video about places not to use the gun including the neck, head and jaw. Everyone should watch that video if they use this thing (I have one). But this is good info too. Thanks!!
I love all of your videos Will! You're doing a wonderful job explaining as well as educating all of us. I am an LMT of 17 years in Florida and am 62 years old, I find your videos very beneficial, as well as guiding me to safely use free weights!
It depends on what massage gun accessory used. I use it for sciatica and my IT band. Makes it feel sooo much better and heal a lot faster. I press gently against areas needed and keep it on the lowest setting. Only use for 10min at a time. This has to be used in conjunction with physical therapy.
Appreciate the recommendation. I got the Bob and Brad massage gun. This video is very helpful as I wanted to be sure to use it correctly and not cause further injury.
Super helpful video Will!! Thank you!! It would also be very helpful if you did a video on where to safely use a massage gun around neck, shoulder, and back!Keep up the great work. I’m passing on your RU-vids to my 50+ friends and family. They all appreciate your work!!
Hi there - thank you for your comment I have added it to my list of future video recommendations! Thank you for sharing my work as well, it really helps me to continue doing what I'm doing!
Hi Will! Hamstring stretches are what healed my PF and they keep it away. A friend told me she had a special PF massage done that focused on the hamstrings so I just did the same with my stretching and it immediately helped! Just wanted to share my experience. Thanks so much for all you do!!
This is a great video, a couple of weeks ago I was in the emergency room with a horrible IT pain, they could not tell me what it was, even after X-rays, send me home with pills. Now I know what it was. Thank you Will.
Just to add an exclamation mark to not using gun on your neck. I was at the Consumer Electronics Show in January and an exhibitor was showing a massage gun to the bystanders and without asking me, held it against my neck. In less than a second i became disoriented and started to crumple to the floor. I reacted fast enough to push her hand away and caught myself from falling.
Could you do a dedicated video on massage gun and relieving tension in neck and shoulders please. I'm also struggling with sciatica so your advice here was greatly appreciated.
I don't risk going to any therapist now, after going in with a sore back and coming away with a vertebral compression fracture. I think now that older people should be checked out for bone density before any form of treatment. He didn't use a gun. Just too heavy handed.
hi Will, you help us so much -thank you! I learned new info here today, so that's good. Thought I read or saw not to use massage gun on neck because of lymph nodes, is that right? Thanks again for the videos. I find your teaching style to be so helpful.
66 years old. Two weeks ago I had a very sharp pain at the sciatic notch after a 1 1/2 hr drive . The following day it was worse . Just took codeine and a NSAID . The next day I loss all power to my right leg quadriceps . No numbness no pain down the leg. I fell over 5 times before I realised what had happened. Went back to hospital MRI showed L4 L 5 bulge . Very slowly I began to get power back in the quad 1 kg lift 2 day 2 Kg lift day 3-6, 4 Kg lift day 7- 1O, 6 Kg 11 -14. Intially I was trying to lift the all whole leg but after watching one of your videos realised that I could irritate the nerve. The pain from the sciatic notch is now migrated to the spine and knee. I now can walk up up stairs once a day using the weak leg. I am being very cautious tried to get detailed advice how to physio therapy the condition with no joy. Lucky I’m retired so have just been very careful and avoided Mackenzie exercise at this stage and only easy going non painful movements like cat cow, balance on one knee and opposite arm facing down , and walking slowly until pain intensifies often throughout the day.
Nice video. Pretty sure you do want to hit the IT bands. There can be trigger points and sticky fascia. Also, targeting tendons are good if you've got scar tissue. there
So glad I came across your video. I just bought my deep percussion massager and was about to use on 4 of the 5 areas you showed😮🤦🏽♀️ Thank you for this information bc the pamphlet only really highlights avoiding the neck.
I'm pleased my video came at the right time for you! I also have the following video with my recommendations for the best areas to treat, which may be of interest :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TqMDHfU5aw8.html
Thanks for explaining WHY. I'm the type of person who will do something anyway if I don't understand WHY I shouldn't. 😅🤦♀️😂 I'm very cautious using my massage gun around my spine & neck, too. Of course, I avoid bones, but I'm not entirely sure whether or not I need to be so cautious. I'd love to learn more. (Maybe that's something that I should be asking a chiropractor?)
It comes with a manual which will tell you no bony areas like neck feel hands or near your shoulder areas to avoid injuries and the rest well he’s explaining well
Well I've learned a lot today. Thank you. In fact I was recently considering purchasing a more powerful gun for my IT Band and my feet. My IT Band is so tender so I use the gun on it, wow, who knew. My feet do not hurt I just like the way the gun feels of my heels and toes lol. Thankful I haven't harmed anything. I use the gun on my dogs pads and belly too thinking it's relaxing him, now I'm worried I've only been harming him.
Thank you. Thanks to you I learned I have something called plantar fasciitis and I now know what to go to my doctor for, and what I can (and can't) do to help it at home. Thank you! (My heel has been hurting so much for a while now, especially as you described it)
I'm so pleased I was able to shed some light on what you were experiencing so that you can access the appropriate support - I'm wishing you all the best in your treatment!
Wish i would of seen this before i used the high power massager my daughter sent me. Ive had two hip replacements and my hips were sore so i used the gun on the hip joint. Three months later and lots of intense pain later I am finally coming back. The pain went all over my right nigh my back and gluetes. Yes, now I have some favorite things i used. Mostly had to use Tylenol and ibuprofen ick!!!
I'm sorry to hear about the injury you experienced from your massage gun - I'm pleased the pain is slowly subsiding and I hope my video has been able to clarify how to use the massager safely to prevent further injury!
Is there a right direction to move the massage gun across the muscles (I noticed you don't follow any particular direction)? For example for the quads or hamstrings, move the gun from the pelvis down to the knee in one direction only (this is what some PTs have taught me)..
Great video. These are some excellent tips summarized in a short video in which, in addition to the tips, I learn something new. At first I wanted to check about the massage gun, but now I'm interested in - how you got rid of plantar fascitis? I struggle with the same everyday and I just haven't tried expensive footwear like cole haan sneakers and shoes yet.. Thanks and greetings from Bihac, BiH🇧🇦
I psched that massager after a previous utube vid you did. Never used it on anything other than as directed in ur vid. Am v surprised to learn(& v appreciative of the explanation/suggested alternative body areas TO massage) that there are some 'no massage spots'... Thank you for pointing these out.
Thank you for your video! I have this massage gun and use it daily. Could you do a video on easing tail bone pain? Great video! You are a good teacher.
Keep the massage gun off ALL tendons to prevent unnecessary soreness. Only works for more meatier muscle not ligamentous tendon attachments. Good to know.👍. Have been putting off using my mechanical massager on the Sciatic Notch for one reason or another. Would have found out the hard way that targeting that same spot would've been a mistakes. Thanks for the warning.
thank you very much for detailed and understandable explanation. I did know about never treat the bone parts, but to have more information, why - and especially, what to treat instead, to release the pain --- helps a lot )
As always informative content, thank you for taking the time your expertise and empathy is very appreciated. Good fortune and happy circumstance attend you, greetings from Melbourne Australia
How long do you recommend to use the gun in the same area? And, How often would you use it if you have the problems you comment? Like every day or every other day? Thank you!
New words for me : IT Band. I was worried it was neuropathy. I’ll start massaging everywhere around it from now on. Hopefully it will give me some relief. Thank you.
Don't forget behind the knee!! My chiropractor routinely massaged the back of my legs, including behind the knee, but one time he pressed quite hard and it really messed my leg up and l couldn't even walk properly. It took a month or more to walk well, and now, 2 yrs later, when l exercise, I can feel the area is still damaged!
Hi, can you please tell me when these massage mechanisms are sold, why do they not come with medical precautions and advice on where to and where not to use this massage device. Thankyou so much for educating us all with how to correctly use this drvice, saving ourselves from causing further pain, kind regards
Add the groin. I had a lingering tightness in my inner thigh and groin area so went to a chiropractor who hit me with a massage gun and activator there -- right where my pelvis and groin is. It gave me a hernia. Had to have surgery.
Hi Will, I have a question about a tens unit. I have sciatica down the front of my leg from my groin to my ankle. My kneecap is always hurting. Should I put the tens unit directly on the kneecap or should I put it above the kneecap?
Thank you very much for another useful video!I am actually about to buy a massage gun for my"nice"cervical syndrome...I'd appreciate if you let me know how to use it in order to treat this problem.Thank you in advance!
I'm really enjoying your content. It would be great if you had any advice on tight forearms, I have been suffering from this for years and I believe it adds to my wrist RSI. Thanks. 😊
Thank you so much, Will. Love all your videos, so full of information. I have been doing a couple of them wrong! Especially the sciatica notch 😂. I've saved this video so I can refer to it until I am used to doing them correctly. You rock🙏💖
IT band has been found to contain smooth muscle and therefore can respond quickly to massage so I don't agree on this one. It does make sense to work into the other muscles that attach to it too ( quads, hams, TFL,gluts)
