Neverwhere Review 

This was not my first Gaiman but ranks as one of my fav books. Perhaps having lived in London for 2 years personalised me to the concept of London Below.

Neverwhere was the first Neil Gaiman book I read. It's wonderful. I hope you'll start posting again.

If you enjoy Gaiman, I would highly recommend looking into an Author named Kate Griffin. One reviewer described her debut novel titled "A Madness of Angels" as a Neverwhere for the digital age. I enjoyed Neverwhere, but it is very evident to me - having come to Neild Gaiman's writing via some of his later work - that this was his first novel. So while its merit and value to the overall artistic evolution of his writing cannot be overstated, it doesn't number among my favorites by him. I think this is the novel where he is the most referential. I can clearly see the inspirations of C.S Lewis and Lafferty and Zelazny in the writing. I feel he found his unique voice more thoroughly with ensuing works.

Have you read his book The Ocean At The End of the Lane? It's pretty short, but I absolutely love it.

I absolutely love Neil Gaiman - not all of his books as he writes many genres - but if I like a book by him I tend to absolutely love that book. I completely agree with your point about him showing a different way to write fantasy. My favourite by him is The Ocean at the End of the Lane, but I know it's not many peoples favourite. As far as comparisons go it's a tough one, I haven't found one completely similar. But for his books like Coraline and the Graveyard Book I feel Diana Wynne Jones books have a similar tone. The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly is a book I thoroughly enjoyed and that reminds me of Gaiman's works as well, that one is quite creepy and very steeped in fairytales and fables. He's written Good Omens with Terry Pratchett and if you like a little more humorous books I'd recommend Dodger by Terry Pratchett as well, it's a stand alone and not a part of his giant discworld series (it's not even a fantasy, but kind of a re-telling of Oliver Twist) but I thought it was really good as well. The Shades of Magic Series by V.E. Schwab I enjoyed a lot as well but I wouldn't say it's similar to Neverwhere. It's a fantasy series with different Londons, but that is where the similarities stop.
