You are lucky. When I was 10 years old, this game didn't even exist, and neither did the internet itself. I am not very young anymore, but I am happy to enjoy all these nice videogames and music nowadays.
The music elevates this game. Without it, it would still be a good RPG, but nothing special. The soundtrack really makes it stand out from the crowd. I actually used it for a DND campaign set in the Forgotten Realms a few years back and it set the tone perfectly.
@@304enjoyer3 Yeah I have no idea how I actually handled complex quests like the Tombs of Neverwinter. Having been at elementary school at the time, and Dutch so my English was certainly sub par. But I did remember the tone being strong in the first act, the quests being the best in the second act, and then the ending. Now if you remove the doomsayers and just have the music, it misses something vital. For a beginners RPG, its excellent.
I started playing it for the first time yesterday (enhanced edition on XBOX one). So far, worth the 9 euros. Only issue I'm pretty sure I will have is that I don't have enough time for gaming.
When I was a little girl, I loved to watch my mom playing this game. I don't know why but I was really fascinated by it and I remember wanting to play it so bad !!
It was essentially the first true D&D style video game. You could also build your own server, with your own map, and create your own fantasy content. Most servers were recreations of books or movies, but a few were completely original and absolutely massive. I think it was the player generated content that made that game impossible to put down. Steam finally got the idea when they created the Workshop.
I realize your post is two years old, but you reminded me of fond memories. My introduction was watching my brother play it and wanting to as well. Luckily for me, I eventually got the chance... dang thing became quite the treasured part of my youth. By any chance, did you ever get the opportunity?
Moment of revelation, when you realize it was the same bloody composer for two of your most favorite games of all time, Morrowind and NWN...the music had to be an integral part to shape such a strong opinion. My God it all makes sense now
*cough cough* "help me" *dying sounds* *sick people* *injured people* that's all i remember of the city night's music is the sound of people crying & dying...
Beautiful soundtrack. This was the first game (along with Sacred) that I installed on "my" first gaming PC. I was so blown away that I had internet in my bedroom. Great memories. Great game.
This game has so much sentimental value for me and the soundtrack is such a rich addition. I got this game not long after I quit drinking and being able to spend a few weeks immersed in NWN was an instrumental part of that process. I'll never stop returning to this game from time to time and it will always be my favorite.
...but not all has been lost in the attack. From a bloody carnage at the Academy a survivor has stepped forward. A champion to carry the torch at this darkest hour...
Tracklist with clickable timestamps rather than individual track durations. This is adapted directly from track durations given in the description. Some of these will probably be a bit off but not by much. I took track lengths included in the original video description and plugged them into a spreadsheet that allows to sum numbers in time format (libreoffice calc does, excel should work as well)
I was listening to the Elder Scrolls Oblivion soundtrack and something about one of the songs reminded me of neverwinter nights so I decided to google and listen to the neverwinter soundtrack. There was a reason the oblivion song reminded me of neverwinter. they're both composed by the same guy! :P makes me happy knowing two of my favourite soundtracks are composed by the same guy
Ohhhhh, man. 41:23, Slums Night Theme. They re-used this in NWN2 in West Harbor after you win the first battle, I'm replaying it atm. This piece was always my favorite from the original NWN soundtrack, it's so well-done. Especially with the added ambient screams and howls of people in the background.
I will never forget the two persistent world servers i have played on: Lands of Lore, and later ALFA (A land Far Away). Unbelievable times. I have spent hours and hours, days and weeks and months on this game. I skipped school, work, literally almost anything just to be able to login to Lands of Lore PW and keep smashing orc skulls with my Paladin of Helm. Harm Spell was OP on that server. Man how I miss those times. And then, later, A Land Far Away, which was a project to actually recreate the world of Faerun. They had like 12 servers which all where connteced to each other. And they were huuuuge! On Server Waterdeep it actually took you almost 25minutes to walk from south to north gate. Those servers were roleplaying servers with PERMADETH and they had Dungeon Masters on them who would run campaigns and regular basis. I will never forget those memories. The Servers I recall were Waterdeep, Loudwater, Ice wind Dale, Neverwinter, Baldurs Gate, Skullport, Undermountain, Myth Drannor and many more which I cant recall right now. Absolutely stunning times.
i am with you totally, 2002-2003 were few of my worst years in israel, and neverwinter nights was such a magical world which i was able to escape into. so many wonderful memories, and that music, wow, those guys in bioware knew how to touch our soul, definitely.
cool, I had almost forgotten playing on the multi-player servers. I spent most of my time trying to kill the other players from off screen, though. ha, good times.
I'm not going to lie. Sometimes I played NWN just to enter a tavern and listen to the music. The game is amazingly fun, but the music is out of this planet.
Brings back such good memories. A time when games are great because it immerses you, takes you to worlds and require a level of imagination from the player. Unlike now where graphics take center stage and the story-line is but an afterthought.
I spent so much time hearing just the menu music, crafting characters. But I love the other themes too, especially City at Night and the Forest at peace.
In Memories Eulania my best friend. She died in a cold night in January 2008. We played Never Winter all day long! That was the best time in my life with her!
Morality is subjective. While one person can view yours "lawful good", the other will view it "chaotic evil". That is what makes good villains in stories. Anyone has the potential to be both villain and a hero. It all depends on the person who is judging you.
This is why I like Guildmaster Dan's alignment breakdown of alignment (v=bSPtcpcMezk). Basically, Lawfull = Principled, Good = Selfless. Meaning, you adhere to your own personal code of conduct (which may or may not align itself with the law of Society and the land), and put the needs of others before your own. And I very much adhere to this code of conduct. And, often against my better judgement, put the needs of others before my own. This doesn't mean I haven't had problems with the Cops. mind you... Unfortunately, many of the "Laws of Man" are, imo, stupid, because they are born out of a desire to opress and separate the population. Such as prohibition laws.
Alignment works in D&D because there are real cosmic factions you can plant your flag with. It's easy to be Lawful Good when there's some literal god with a literal portfolio of Lawful Good-ness -- just march under his banner and you're good to go. But in the real world, alignment isn't so cut-and-dry. But if you try your best, you'll be good enough.
@@ArvisSc The person maybe seen as lawful evil not chaotic evil... Morality also is not subjective. Morality of the promise made, a contract. No civilization exists now or previously where it was considered acceptable to make a promise and then break that promise against a peer. EG you give me 10 gold coins I give you 10 bags of grain. If you took the gold coins and didn't give the 10 bags of grain no civilization exists that says thats ok. That's because this is a basic morality and civilization couldn't exist without it.
@@givemeanameman1 That is an oversimplified example. Better way to put this is why didn't he give 10 bags of grain if he was paid 10 gold? Morality is not about what you did, but why you did it. This is what makes villains for example - relatable.
I Thought it was the game that i missed so much, but it was the Really Haunting memories that made this into a Masterpiece of RPG, and that tipped the scale of Pure D&D game play. 33:21
If it is not too much trouble, would you mind correcting the Tracklist, it is currently only a listing of the track lengths, and not the times for the beginning and ending of each track: "Main Theme [02:31] Castle Theme [01:14] City Night Theme [01:48] Crypt Theme 1 [02:00] Crypt Theme 2 [01:11] ... ... Battle Forest Boss [01:33] Battle Lizard Boss [01:48] Battle Rural [01:32] Ending Movie [01:23]" Much appreciated! :-)
After all these years, I'm still here, reminiscing the untouched childhood memories I had with this game, mostly role playing on dedicated servers (Siloë, Sendarie if any french player read it).. I doubt some day we'll be able to see anything like that happening again.
Undoubtedly some of the best music in any videogame... So many memories playing this, and the track are still so present in my mind. Truly a masterpiece of a game.
I remember this game on multiplayer, what a time! I was like 12-13, before the MMORPG thing took off with WoW and Lineage2, this was the time, and all those different servers with different people and worlds and rules. But the music was something that gave it all this magic.
I do miss playing dungeons and dragons offcourse im old school I played 2nd Ed but still tho game may of stop the love of the adventure still in my heart.
It never ceases to amazing how a piece of music makes a room feel .........just so much more you know? the level design lighting and decorations do some work then the music fills in the blanks. like this is a dark room with some red candles lighting the room across the room there is a door but its got skulls decorating it and this is playing. Evil Temple Theme [00:16:35] . I can almost hear the generic voiced greetings of some NPC's when i speak to them ingame but hear the music.
I'm not sure I'd go that far, but it's certainly the best game ever in terms of longevity. It's still going in 2018, and now there's an Enhanced Edition available from Beamdog or through Good Old Games or even Steam.
@@JasonMasters It's the first rpg like this I ever played, so I get a lot of nostalgia about the first Neverwinter and accept a lot of its shortcomings in a way I wouldn't forgive those of other games. I played Planescape Torment shortly after...and that to me is the best game ever :)
I would love a remake of this game, mostly a modern graphical update, better character creation, and a few additions here and there, but keep the core gameplay intact
It doesn't need a remake but we need more complete CRPGs like NWNs that allowed players to add their own content without nickel and diming everything. Leave it to modders to remake stuff... developers are the cream of talent who should concentrate on creating a good example and providing the tools for enthusiasts to iterate on their work. Sadly it's all about the $ nowadays.
Yes, and now Beamdog, made up mostly of former Bioware programmers, has acquired the rights to the game and has re-released it as Enhanced Edition, with better graphics and many bug fixes. The Good Old Games version has now been replaced with the EE but they bundle the former GOG version (Diamond Edition) with the EE purchase so you can download and install either or both with the same purchase.
I haven't played this game or even though about it in 15 years and I still remember the music. What does that say about how amazing this soundtrack is?
This music is associated with some of the warmest memories in my entire life, this very kind of music, that deals more than half of all atmosphere in NWN, absolutely masterpiece
this game introduced me to the perfect personal rpg experience and is the reason why jeremy soule is my favorite composer.. ever every game he ever made music for hade me a slave for that very game through many hours. Thank you Jerry for inmersing me into the world of fantasy harmony and horror May odin forever bless you
as much as I love Jeremy Soule Soundtracks after playing KOTOR 1 and 2, NWN and the last 3 Elder Scrolls, I gotta admit they are pretty similar, again love them, could recognize them anywhere but they are kinda interchangeable between each other.
There is now an Enhanced Edition of this game, distributed by Beamdog which is mostly former Bioware programmers. They distribute the game themselves and also through Steam and now Good Old Games. Although the EE has replaced Diamond Edition on gog.com, I have been told that they are now bundling the original Diamond Edition along with the Enhanced Edition so you can download and install either or both with a single purchase. It does cost more than Diamond alone, but it's still affordable.
I used to run a PW called Calmwind... I had some nifty scripting in there such as tradeskills as well as a custom "soul weapon" system where you would select a weapon your character identifies with and it would create a soulbound weapon that as you use it it would track your stats and grow more powerful the more you used it and grew in level as well. A TON of great memories with this game and NWN2 as well. Might have to get the enhanced edition and/or NWN2 and do some creating again. :)
+Peaceful Machete You still can. Can't find the servers because master server is down and gamespy too, but theres a community made server list out there somewhere. The game is still surprisingly active after all this time.
+ThiagowwW10 What about Nordock? I remember playing on this when I was young. I'd like to go back and play on that server. I think that was in Gamespy too.
I have such mixed feelings about Nwn. It had great music and many memorable characters, but arriving at the heels of the BG2 and Torment its early 3D graphics simply couldn't compete to the earlier games' majestic isometric backgrounds. Its story was not quite up to the same level, the decision to not have a full, controllable party really hurt the game and their was not nearly the same tactical depth to combat.
This is the best game ever created. And she remains like that to this day. The second part was absolutely unsuccessful, a weak, clumsy parody of the original.
God I get goosebumps every second of Rural Theme 1, of my earliest years playing NWN HG PoA module, killing insanely powerful children of the corn on my newly minted epic character in the middle of cornfields and a lone scarecrow to the west...
I have not played this game in years nor have I heard the music since my last play but how these tracks bring back some great memories! I also played a good number of community created content and so many were so well done.
