It's 1981 and Tyne Tees Television announcer Neville Wanless says good night and has a special message for the engineers at the local transmitter. Plus the Tyne Tees clock (the time here at Tyne Tees is just coming up to the twentieth century). And don't forget to unplug your set! Proof that television was so much more exciting in those days -- it could burn your house down at any moment!
By the way, Tyne Tees didn't fade up the audio of the national anthem too late, I've cut out that bit of sound myself. When I recorded this in 1980 I was messing around feeding a tape player into the VCR. So the original VHS recording has Kenny Everett saying 'the only station with Queen Anne legs'. Which ruins the effect a bit.

When I think Tyne Tees Television I think of Neville Wanless. He has a really warm personally that oozes out of the television set into your room. Happy days.

Okay, back in the 1980's my regional (now defunct) TV station was Grampian....but when visiting my relatives in Lemington outside of Newcastle, we'd of course, be watching TTTV, I remember Neville Wanless. Brings back a few memories allright.

There was that feeling that TV was an old trusty friend, reflected in the continuity announcer saying, "A special goodnight if you are watching on your own". With generic itv, that sentiment is now sadly impossible.

ITV threw all of that away in the 1990s. After building those much loved regional companies for 35 years.

There was a chap on Anglia in the late 80s who used to say that. Always had the feeling that he looked even lonelier than I was! Bless him. Heavy-set grey-haired guy in his late 50s, wish I could remember his name.

Both Tyne Tees and Yorkshire were part of the same company in the 1970's -- Trident Television. I believe they were forced to become more separate by the IBA. As Tyne Tees covered North Yorkshire too, I guess there was some reason why the Emley Moor transmitter would be mentioned.

Emley Moor was the Regional Operations Centre which would have been monitoring and remotely controlling Pontop Pike and Bilsdale.

Good Morning and welcome to tyne tees, broadcast from the pontop pike and bilsdale transmitters. And now: TV-am with anne diamond and roland rat.

You're quite right. We had an ancient TV aerial at the time.

Why shouldn't there be regulations which force companies to make lower profits if doing that is in the best interest of the public rather than a handful of shareholders? It was only "the way" because the government allowed profits to be put before what was best for viewers in the north-east. The companies claimed they wouldn't be able to make a profit in the digital era unless they were allowed to merge. In fact they probably would have been perfectly fine the way they were. We were conned.

The answer to the mention of the then IBA transmitter on TTTV is probably because TTTV was at one stage tahen over by YTV and the joint parent company was known as Trident Television. Some time in the 1970s.

I didn't know Felling had been bypassed? That's shocking!

agreed Sloppy, and i think having a flesh and blood continuity presenter, as opposed to a "flat straight to the point voice over," gave a more friendlier impression of the regional station(s)

God how many clocks were on screen due to that ghosting?
@doubledeckers

It depended on how windy it was. My dad was too mean to get a new aerial. In the end I had to pay for one!

Well said and now licence fee payers are having to pay up to £300m to move BBC departments to Salford. Which is partly an attempt to replace the regional ITV broadcasters that were destroyed by greed but also the BBC production centres that existed but were then run down for no good reason (Pebble Mill, BBC Newcastle). In effect the cost of the move to Salford is nothing more than public money being handed to ITV shareholders.

LOL I have this clock set as my screen saver!! Was this the only clock for Tyne Tees? Also was the clock meant to have a sort of reflection. My screen saver doesn't.

Was weird i lived in Barnsley but we were able to get a better picture for Tyne Tees than YTV, not complaining though Calendar was shit :-)

1218174 - I think that's what's known as 'ghosting' caused by a poor TV signal!
@joannegray5138
@joannegray5138 5 лет назад
I'd welcome the days of ghosting back -better than the pixellation and irritating screeching from Freeview when a bird passes within half a mile of your aerial and upsets the entire signal for the entire length of the programme you're trying to watch.

I think this is a myth put about to allow them to dumb down. Despite predictions of doom and gloom the audience has held up pretty well for the established broadcasters. They aren't at early 1980's levels anymore but compare very favourably to the 1960's. And there's an argument to say that if ITV had kept the regional structure they would have even better viewing figures and a greater pool of creativity to draw on.

Hear, hear, I would rather eat a plate of wasps than watch some of the rubbish the modern ITV churn out. Tyne Tees was a well loved brand that has been destroyed so ITV can waste money on rubbish like Red or Black.

Rest her soul, Kathy Secker's ad for Co-op "fud" stores used to make me cringe.
