1967......#1 U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 U.S. Cash Box Top 100, #5 UK Singles Chart, #1 Canada, #4 Australia, #4 New Zealand
Original video edited and remastered with HQ stereo sound.
"The Letter" is a song written by Wayne Carson that was first recorded by the American rock band the Box Tops in 1967. It was the group's first and biggest record chart hit, reaching No. 1 in the United States and Canada. It was also an international success, achieving the top ten in several other countries.
The Box Tops lead vocalist Alex Chilton sang "The Letter" in a gruff blue-eyed soul style. The song launched Chilton's career and inspired numerous cover versions. English rock and soul singer Joe Cocker's 1970 rendition became his first top ten single in the U.S.; several other artists have recorded versions which also reached the record charts.
Rolling Stone magazine included the Box Tops original at No. 372 on its list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time"; the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame added it to the list of the "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll". In 2011, the single was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
"The Letter" reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 singles chart published by Billboard magazine on September 23, 1967. It remained at the top position for four weeks and Billboard ranked the record the No. 2 song for 1967. The single sold more than one million copies and the RIAA certified it as gold.

This is yet another 4:3 aspect ratio video inexplicably stretched to 16:9. "Original video edited and remastered" may have improved the colour or sharpness, but why change the aspect?

I think they are making the best of what some might feel is an embarrassing situation: having to pretend to be performing the song the audience is hearing. If you are going to be in such a situation, instead of making it look real, might as well mock it.

In 1967 The Box Tops single had just hit the airwaves...we didn't know anything about the band but one of my buddies asked me if I had heard THE LETTER on the radio. Agreed, we loved the voice and the message. These guys sounded hot....only other tune I was familiar with was CRY LIKE A BABY....that was another great and memorable song from the height of the British Invasion. And these guys were American.

I always hated the smirks on the players' faces. The guy who wrote "You Only Get What You Give" smirked and bad-attituded his @$$ into one-hit-wonder-dom that way. This cat made it obvious that he thought the video was bs and you can see it on his face at a couple of points in the video, IIRC. He made the video director dislike him, too apparently, to let a product that bites itself out like that.
