I always look forward to your balanced reviews, and I think Apple definitely hit a home run with the MBA 15. My guess is that it's going to be their best selling laptop. I think there is still a place for the 13, although I might be biased because I have the M2 MBA 13, but it perfectly fits my use case. It's crazy portable so it's perfect when I travel, and it isn't my primary computer, I have a Mac desktop and 27" monitor for home use.

What a pity that it isn’t equipped with the M3 chip due to a delay in production. It would be in a better position for this 15-inch launch to justify its launch given this period (where the M2 chip has been out for quite some time)

Started with a mid-2012 MBP 13" that is a bit souped up. Then to the 16" M1 basic. Wow! An aluminum-encased monster! Wanted an in-between, so MBA 13" M2. Too small. Traded after about six months (Lost about $300) for the 15" M2 MBA. I love it ! Fits in perfectly, and I agree with most of the stuff in the video, (you guessed it...) BUT if Apple comes out with the M3 chip AND an extra 'C' port, (both, not one) I will trade up one last time. Bob

Its horses for courses, this macbook air is hardly a workhouse laptop, but for a lot of people, it's a perfect solution. It will only get better with a M3 chip upgrade. Not the type of machine you would use to run multiple monitors or for heavy video projects. Compared with what was on offer when the macbook air was first launched, this computer is amazing.

I’m glad to hear a positive statement about the M2 Air cause a lot of people have been very negative on the M2 Air that it gets too hot or anything else about it. I ordered the 15 inch M2 Air and excited to try It! Especially I got the 24GB RAM with the Base storage. Just note: I’ve seen benchmark videos but seem way too mixed and seen more negatives than positive reviews but glad to see videos that are positive about the M2 Air

Glad you got the Starlight color, I just got Silver color with the 13.6 inch M2 MacBook Air with 16 gigs or ram memory, and 512 SSD storage. I'm a longtime Windows user since 1999 with Windows 98. My last Dell desktop had Windows 7 pro with 2T hard drive cause I had a website, and built my own web pages. This is my first laptop, and I love it, very user friendly. You are right about the sound. 15 inch is louder but, doesn't sound much better than the 13.6 inch Air. I think the 15 inch Air is great for those people that have a desk to put it on. For those of us that want to sit on your couch with legs up on chaise, or portable on the go, 13.6 inch Air is the best. Last Friday I had the Soho Apple Store, help me set up my laptop. After finished, I put it in my laptop crossbody briefcase, and it didn't put a strain on my shoulders at all. Was so light weight to carry all around Soho, and Chinatown, then home on the subway.

I have been very critical of this model, knowing my Apple hardware well, I had great trouble positioning this laptop. I know a lot of people were looking at this model. You have a great point to mention the small flaws in the internal design. I went to the Apple Store last night as I received my 14" MBP yesterday, I was in the area, and I always get pulled towards the bright white lights (like a moth). First thing I found, the chassis feels great to type on, the rounded corners are less sharp than on my 14". I have changed my stance, and had a great conversation with some other people at the store. I still think that the laptop should have 16Gb and a 512Gb SSD, this is in my opinion the golden standard. Even when today the price gets into MacBook Pro territory, it is not up to me to tell people what to spend their money on. With the back-to-school season starting up here in North America / Canada soon, this will be a very important computer. Will it replace the M2 MBA 13.6 inches (yes, also almost 14" inches). Price wise, I am over the fact that people are willing to spend the money on this 15". As I was admiring the laptop in the store, I never, ever, heard any of the sales geniuses mention upgrading the laptop. They keep pushing the laptop, even when a parent was asking about the other models. "You really want this one, it is..... " Oh, and parents, here is some advice: Do bring your kid to the store and let them try it out, you will notice they flock to the bigger screen.

There isn’t a replacement for multi screens imo I hate using spaces.
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery Год назад
I guess you could use an external display and an iPad in Sidecar mode. There are workarounds using the DisplayLink software drivers and a compatible hub, which might work for some people. It is possible to run three external displays with these third-party drivers and software, but that won't suit everyone.

@@ConstantGeekery ye I tried it with my M1 but lag when your are doing intense work is downside. Tbh it’s not a big deal for the intended users but if your travel a lot and have a desktop and a laptop but the new M chips smoke the desktop so using it for both is a real use case and with the older intel models supporting 2 it is a downside

A question - how well does the Low Power Mode improve battery life? I don't watch movies or do any heavy duty stuff on my M1 MBA, but it might be useful when doing presentations on an external screen or for long meetings when charging is not an option? I got myself the 15 Air with 24GB RAM and 256 SSD, the reason why I went with the configuration is cause I use a gaming monitor as a 2nd Monitor display which can use significant energy when I have 2 windows open on an browser so that extra RAM is very useful and there is NO alternatives for extra ram while I do have a 5TB external hard drive which there is many alternatives and having a bigger screen on the MacBook Air for less then 2000 bucks is just insane value. I was thinking at a Pro version at first but just to have the 14 M2 Pro is already 2000 bucks + tax and I don’t really need the HDMI port since I already have a USB Hub, overall I love the portability of the MacBook Air 15 and upgrading it from my Intel 2020 MacBook Air is a huge Win for me! Even the 13" M1 supported HDR10 so does the new 15" M2 Macbooks. I'm not sure why you said they aren't HDR displays. Is it because they don't have 10,000,000,000 nits? Panels don't require a billion nits to be an HDR display.
@ConstantGeekery
@ConstantGeekery 9 месяцев назад
I'm trying to avoid confusion with viewers less familiar with the technology because most TVs and monitors claim to support one HDR standard or another, but the reality is far from straightforward. I think this can be misleading for consumers. You are completely correct, but I'd say supporting the HDR10 standard is not the same as being capable of displaying that content as intended by the creator. High Dynamic Range is more about the difference between the light and the dark areas of the display, not just how bright it can be. Contrast ratio and local dimming are more important to obtaining a greater dynamic range. The MacBook Air has a lovely screen with excellent brightness, and the contrast ratio is actually pretty good, but it lacks local dimming so it just can't get near the contrast ratio of the MacBook Pro. Nor could it display HDR10 content at its target peak brightness of 1000 nits. If the content featured something very bright in part of the frame, the darker areas of the frame will also appear lighter, because the display can't dim (or brighten) individual areas of the screen - it's all or nothing. So yes, the MBA panels can display HDR10 content, but if you put one side-by-side with a mini-LED display, such as the MacBook Pro, the difference would be very obvious.

if you can I would go 16Gb. My question to you is are you buying this because of the weight or? My eeco would be this. First off look more at the m1 mbp in 14 or even 16. All depends on your budfet. I just got the 16” m1 mbp with 32gb ram and 512gb for 1949 usd. That is basically the same price if you use these same specs on the m2 mba 15”. I get it’s a lb lighter but I have used and traveled with both and the added performance was worth it to me. That said it is personal preference so good luck with your purchase. One last thing. If you could use Davinci Resolve vs PR I would highly recommend that. PR to me as a video editor has always been a hog. No way PR or AE will work with only 8gb of ram.

I wanted the m2 mba but came to the conclusion thatif Ingave it 16 or 24 (which really does nothing) and at least 512 I could easily get an m2 mbp or an m1 mbp 16”. Yes I know it’s a pound heavier but I have an amazing bag that loads things so well it’s not bad. So anyways, I fould a new m1 16” mbp with 512gb abd 32gb of memory for 1949 usd. That is crazy. The entry level M1 MacBook Airs have two 128 Gb flash modules. By contrast the entry level M2 MacBook Air has a single 256 Gb flash module. This means that the 256 Gb M2 MacBook is significantly slower than a 256 Gb M1 MacBook. Sales of M2 Macs have not been as high as M1 Macs for this reason. If Apple want to make the M2 the hot seller that they want it to be then they should give purchasers an extra 256 Gb flash module for free. The component cost of a 256 Gb flash module is only around £50.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England Год назад
My MB Air M2 256GB still gets 1.7Gbps on the rare occasions I need sequential reads/writes for transfers and that is far more than any of my external devices need. So for 95% of base MB Air M2 users that is moot, and for the others if transfers are a big thing they will probably get 1TB+. Most neutral techie creators now understand that the reduction from two to one NAND module for base models is not important. The actuality is that 128GB modules are being phased out due to demand of consumers wanting more than 128GB storage (be careful what you wish for), and now 128GB costs more than 256GB, so two 128GB modules are >2X cost, plus poor for e-waste. Windows 256GB machines have had one NAND module for years so maybe complain about that? The random reads/writes on M2 are faster than the M1, as they are for all 256GB Windows drives, and these are what we use 99% of the time when we work the SSDs. As for two NAND having more swap availability, that is true as two NANDs will have 2X the dRAM than one. But if you are constantly swapping then really you should upgrade your actual RAM rather than stress out your NAND, especially if you keep your machine for 5-7 years. Though a caveat, that sensible users even with slower amounts of high swap levels will probably not notice unless they do stupid unrealistic tests like Max Tech does. So, move on, high-density storage is now the de facto choice and even 512GB is now single module for M2 MB Pros. They will eventually become the status quo but will improve in time.

LG Gram isn't as sturdy as MBP ... anybody can build a light laptop that doesn't feel premium and the frame flexes ...

Fair point even if it isn't as premium. The LG didn't come into my mind when I was researching.

this mba has created a sweet spot between the base and mbp 14” That said the fact is on some level Apple has weirdly done to good of a job with Apple silicon. As far as performance goes the diff between 1 & 2 on real world use (as a graphic designer Adobe cc) I just picked upa m1 mbp (new) with 512 sd 32gb ram for 1949 us. That is i sanely dair price. It’s 1k below the original price. I know it’s way heavier but honestly this has never bothered me as my bag really holds it well. My long winded point is at this juncture any of these M(1,2) will do the job and then some. The number of ppl that will need the crazy speced out one is probably someone that works for Disney in a sound booth. Buythe the 15” m2 mba really is for the screen and nothing else. The weight diff on a mbp 14” is not that great but I think having the mba is the cool choice. Loce your videos and thank you.

On the release date last Thursday I went to the Apple Store and held the 15" MBA in my hand. I could barely discern the weight from the 16" MBP; IMO it betrays the 'Air' moniker. And when you load it up with 16GB and at least 512GB of RAM (to get 2 NAND chips), the price is more than a new M1 MBP, which is a much better machine in every way. Unless you really need a new computer, I think you're better off either buying an 16" M1 MBP or M1 MBA or waiting for an M3.

One last thing I will add, to the consumers wanting the air model, this video is great showing why it’s good to upgrade just ram to 16gb and not to worry about the hard drive as it’s starts to get so expensive. Shows an air running with 16gb ram ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-28c_joIk0Ac.html

Apple is not the only one that charges more for 16GB of RAM. They all do it.

Still the biggest issue to run into, is the 8g/256gb configurations beeing seriously overpriced. ATM ahead of a laptop purchase because of that, i cant even consider a macbook even tho it would be the best fit because for me the price jump(hungary) would be close to double to go with the 16gig version with 512gb storage. That fact alone makes every laptop on the market so much better value that apple just feels like beeing robbed. Hell i could get a much more stacked laptop hardware wise, a new phone, and a 4k display for the price of a macbook air that would have enough juice for basic data analtics work(after bypassing all the compatibility issues regarding macbook which is a headache in itself). Apple needs to come in with a giant price drop with their next lineup like bare minimum should be 16gigs of ram and 512 gb than next upgrade should be 32 gigs of ram with 1tb storage instead of a step by step upgrade option along with much much better software support but that alone can take ages.

not a home run. i think this will flop. price is too steep, particularly in this economy. nobody will want to make an investment for a disposable computer.

Reviews need to start pushing the narrative this is not good enough. A Mac with 8GB and 256GB SSD shouldn’t exist in this day and age. Do not buy the base model no matter what you do.
@ConstantGeekery

I agree that 8/256 is low in 2023 - I said as much in the video - but it's a big stretch to make a sweeping "do not buy" statement. The computer is perfectly capable of doing all the tasks anyone buying a machine like this would reasonably expect, and more besides. I speak from experience as we buy a large variety of different machines for the 40 or so staff in our digital agency, and none of the team with the 8GB models have reported any issues. In the past, the Intel models with 8GB certainly were causing problems.

@@ConstantGeekery 16GB is a min, after booting macOS you have less than 3GB left for everything else. 256GB SSD means you can’t even run iTunes for long. If you download an update, backup the phone and you're pretty much done - yes you can have external devices, but who wants to drag those around? They are pointless device for the majority of users. Without a fan they get too hot on your lap if you try to do anything of note. MBP at 1699 is just a light year ahead. get a refurb or sale model. You know it makes more sense. M3s with a min of 16GB/512GB apple.

@@nothingtosee7718 I get it. 👍🏻I tell people who want more performance to buy 16GB or go MBP. We're tech enthusiasts and we understand that better specs are available, and we know how to use the machine to make the most of them. But a huge part of the audience for these machines just don't think that way and don't need the higher specs either. I have tested these machines _extensively_ and they do the job just fine. As I said in the video, this thing has considerably more performance than an i9 MBP 15 from 2019. It's not really the case that there's only 3GB of RAM for other things either. That memory use includes caches that help speed things up - these are cleared when needed. I'm currently testing Affinity Photo 2, after booting macOS and it's currently using 4.26 GB... which includes display data for the GPU. No problems. I also take the point on storage, but Apple knows full well that most people stream content and store data in the cloud. As techies we are far too concerned with specs instead of looking at whether the tool is fit for the work. That's because the manufacturers have conditioned us that way - to always want better numbers (regardless of whether we can fully utilise the performance). It suits the manufacturers for people to want higher specs because they get the upgrade revenue... which is highly profitable!

@@nothingtosee7718 If you are going to look at discounted MBPs, you'll need to consider discounted MBAs. In the States, the MBA 15 16/512 can be had for $1579 with the educational discount bundled with an ($150) Apple Store card for future purchase. So now you are effectively comparing a $1429 to $1699 with the Air giving a larger display area and thinner footprint. This is ideal for college student who wants to bring his/her laptop to the library or coffee shop to get work done. It also lessons the need for acquiring an external monitor in a tight dorm room.

@@nothingtosee7718 Nonsense. I've been using a base M1 MBA for business travel for over 2 years. Runs all day, never gets hot. My business files use about 20 GB of storage so my 256G SSD is half empty. No problems with updates of phone backups. The 15" will be better for my spreadsheets. The 14" MBP has only a marginal screen size increase, and my spreadsheets and invoices don't need the screen 'improvements'.
