At this time of year we eagerly await the new Typhoon display from the RAF which will entertain the crowds at airshows and other events around the country.
This year is particularly exciting as the Royal Air Force have repainted one of their jets in a special livery to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-day landings, or Operation Overlord to give it its' proper name.
Back then piston-engined, rocket armed Hawker Typhoons of the RAF were heavily involved in the invasion, particularly during the Battle of Normandy, and so the livery chosen for the 2024 jet depicts a Typhoon on 257 Sqn. and is applied to what is a very different shape of aircraft, but still works quite well . . . despite receiving the very unfortunate nickname of "Moggy"
The Typhoon Display pilot for this year is David "Turbo" Turnbull, and his display is featured at the beginning of this video in the special jet - it is the first time this jet has featured in the livery in sunny weather, which show off the colours really well.
Sadly the display is marred by the groundsman deciding to mow the airfield grass right in front of the photographers at the very time of the display (honestly you couldn't script it could you?????). This has compromised the take off landing and overall soundtrack.
I don't think for a second it was planned as a spoiler by the RAF but was incredibly unfortunate but this is an operational air base and these things happen . . .
The commemorative jet did do another two sorties throughout the day which were not interfered with by the ground staff so there are plenty of opportunities on this video to admire the new colours.
The 2024 display does not particularly break any new ground as pretty much all the moves have been done before, as the RAF began displaying the Typhoon way back in 2005, and the display is different every year in some way.
In addition to the display, this video goes on to show some of the general airfield operations, which are always worth watching.
