Always a big fan of all metal, with perhaps some wood, guns. AKs, 1911s, and revolvers always get my heart beating a little faster. I like polymer, too, but they're like basic utility vehicles compared to classic muscle cars.
Oh, the sweet, sweet sound and feel of a .45 acp. I've got my Government Garrison 2 years ago and now almost 10k rounds through. Only hiccup was some underpowered loads from Reman ammo. I'm sure this commander size will perform as well. Great vid!
You really like that gun Sootch - the enthusiasm really shows through. I too like my 1911s simple and basic and have been thinking about a Garrison. Just to let you know, your video will probably get me in trouble with the wife.
It's ironic you mention that because the shorter barrel length actually reduces the punch of the 45 ACP round quite a bit per inch you reduce it by. That's why John Browning specifically chose the 5 inch barrel and I believe he was never consulted with the commander model. I don't think that was something he would have gone for. They are fine weapons but 45 ACP already has enough trouble expanding because of its slow velocity when you start going beneath a 5 inch barrel length you best just carry full metal jacket ammunition. 230 grain heavy rounds especially standard pressure don't really expand. Fortunately they have a half inch diameter regardless but then over penetration becomes an issue. I hate to say it but 9 mm round technology has eclipsed the 45 and this is coming from a guy who only carried a 45 for many years. That being said I don't want to be the old timers I would see when I was a young man who refused to adapt and died with the rolling tied. I will swim with it instead. So thusly 9 mm is the future if you want a 45 you're really should keep the barrel at 5 in or go with a different caliber imo
@@DBONE117The beautiful thing about the 45 is that it doesnt have to expand and it's still a big enough hole and wound cavity. These guns were designed to use hard ball ammo, and that's what I still use. I myself prefer the government models myself, i think either one will do the job. Hope you have a great day.
These 1911s in .45 from Springfield are beautiful. Wish you would do reviews of some other 1911s from Springfield too. Also, I just want to say, thank you for all the gun reviews you have done over the years. I'm sure it is alot of work. But they are great! Well done, Don!
This is an outstanding video that not only showcases this 1911, but details the differences between the full house 5” design and the 4.5” commander design. Great job. I gotta get one of these.
That’s a good looking 1911 there Sootch, I love Springfield pistols as I’m fortunate to own several XD’s, Operators, and a TRP…You Sir have me licking my chops for this one! Thanks again sir!👍👍👍
I’m a 1911 guy that new Springfield is so sexy. I have for home protection the Wiley Clapp special edition 70 series has never failed me or jammed colt but I did see on RU-vid a spring field commander it had the looks and a laser I believe it’s a 2024….Wiley Clapp is a former marine and sharp shooter “everything you need nothing you don’t “that’s his model lightweight commander first colt to have initials. That’s the only way the Clapp would build a gun is 😂if they put his initials on the serial number. This is not the gun. I’m talking about what you see it’s just to me a regular 1911 also Clapp made sure it was a 70 series
I'm sure lots of people consider recoil management and muzzle flip a lot . As you mentioned the 9 mm is the hot choice nowadays. And people are putting compensators and lightened\lightning cut slides on their 9mm pistols. And changing out recoil springs. All to lessen recoil on a 9 mm. If they would just try an all steel frame\slide pistol like a 1911\2011 they'd be amazed at the way they don't muzzle flip compared to polymer framed pistols. Springfield offers lots of 1911s in .45 acp & 9mm. Their choices are FS = full size, 5" barrel, 8 rounds MS = medium size, 4.2" -4.3" barrel model dependent, 7\8 rounds CS = compact size, 3.3" - 3.5" barrel, 7 rounds. BBR = small as hell, 3.10" barrel double stack 10+1 rounds. And they have double stack 1911s in both .45 acp and 9 mm. 14+1 rounds in .45 acp, 20+1 rounds in 9 mm. They have aluminum and steel framed MS\medium sized offerings.
Your review is too late Sootch. Bought one on Monday! ;) Awesome 1911. I also have a Springfield Ronin Commander. You just can't go wrong with a Springfield 1911. Thanks for the review of my newest gun! :)
Again you do a awesome job on your reviews. I just purchased my Springfield Garrison in the blue 5" and it shoots fantastic however I changed the grips to a Gruun G10 in black and gray and I like it. One thing I don't like is the mag release button is very hard to push the magazine does not just drop out and you have to pull it out. I did order two more magazines from Springfield and they all three act the same. Overall I love the gun.
I bought this pistol as a birthday gift to myself partly based on this review. I was considering the EMP Ronin 9mm for a long time but didn't like the idea that the frame is aluminum alloy. I am eating at an Amish-style restaurant with Mennonite ownership today with my pastor as a birthday meal. Why? It is pie (pi) day and they are excellent with pies. Great video.
I was testing my neighbor's Springfield Garrison government model when the extractor failed. These things can happen, but in a brand new firearm I was very disturbed.
I love that gun!!!! It looks sweet, and feels sweet.I went to RU-vid right after learning about it at the gun shop. That is a real deal 1911 for the price. You can’t beat that!!!!
Good show sootch !! Bout time you tested a real hand gun and a good choice!! Now back that up with a New colt Commander... maybe the new SE or Willie Clapp
My very first gun-and always my favorite-is my Stainless Colt Combat Commander I bought while I was still in the Army in the late 80s. I think I’m gonna grab a Stainless one to bookend my collection. I have a half dozen Springfield .45s already, all the XD models, a Garrison, the bare bone’s government model they brought out (WW2 model), and another full sized one. I might as well grab one, since that original Combat Commander has been my favorite since time began. I’m sure this Springfield will cost about three times more than that Colt did back in the 80s, but I know what I’ll be getting, and know it’ll shoot great.
The Recoil Control on this 45 acp is Exceptional A 45 For the Future! Excellent Work and Machining Springfield Armoury! Beautiful The Fed Chose Very Well! Thanks for Malta! Regards and Respect! Paul
Nice gun....Springfield is definitely upping their game! I like that they finally have an actual 4.25 Commander length model rather than the 4" they used to make....not sure it makes any real world difference, just esoteric i suppose, other than holster selection, that is! I love both the Colt lightweight commanders AND the all steel Combat commanders.
Good to see that Springfield is offering a Hollywood pistol that requires no reloading from the opening ha ha. I love a 1911, one of the great design of John Browning. I still haven’t picked up a pair of Colt Officers models that been a long term goals I wouldn’t consider an aluminum frame but a nice stainless steel pair would be great. Maybe for my birthday 2024.
I put a formed piece of Talon granulate grip material on the front of my blued government model. Looks nice and allows for as very firm grip on the pistol. The Garrison is one hell of a nice 1911!
Ok Don were you reading my mind! This is going to be my next purchase and I was actually looking to see if you had done a review on the garrison but saw you only had one on the ronin series! 😂👍
Im a old guy,yet I carry a full size Springfield stainless, loaded model. It was around 2009, before every gun company had a version.Have a Beretta 92 inox, which will fire a total of 18 hollow points, double single action.Never had a problem with Ruger,Sfig,Springfield, all these. 7 companies are great.Ruger is the champion for service after sale.I like the single action consistency.I shoot my 92 single action always cock the first round, although you must be cautious. The Beretta will shoot ANYTHING.....IT IS AMAZING!.All my guns have had extensive gunsmith s ,resulting in better, smoother shooting.Your groups will get much smaller.Back when I bought my 1911,the Springfield loaded was really a deal. You cant go wrong with Springfield Armory on 1911
Hi 1)Norinco 1911 9mm 10rd 2024 version good gun ?? 2)Version Sport good quality ?? 3)Oryginal barell strong ?? 4)Good idea change barell Wilson Combat and add magazines Wilson Combat ?? 5) Trigger good ?? Regards Artur Poland
I have a Colt Commander tuned up at Terry Tussey's Shop in Carson City, Nevada. Sweet shooting piece. Also have a Les Baer Concept VII (Commander) that is so nice. Commander size 1911s is pretty much the perfect size personal defense handgun. Even Jeff Cooper praised the feel and size of the commander. Put a commander size in your hand wiggle and wave it around a bit---after double checking it to ensure it is empty. Then do the same with a full size government 1911. The government size feels just a bit too big and the Commander feels just right. My commander sized 1911s are the better size for CCW over the full size. When Springfield use super thin grips, they have to use super thin grip bushings. So they won't fit swapping new grips on them as all over grips use regular size bushings. So you have to buy regular size grip bushings, remove the factory super thin bushings, screw in the regular bushings, now you can install new G10s, Pachmayrs, Hogues, etc.
Both this commander and the government have their purposes. This is the ideal concealed carry 1911 in my opinion, while the government is best suited for a home defense sidearm. All I’d do to these garrison models are some hogue walnut grips, trijicon night sights, and arched mainspring housings. For some reason the a1 has always been natural to shoot for me along with revolvers, but I did wish they had the long trigger. I blame it on xl glove size hands with decently big palms and long fingers.
I see some gun tubers shooting and they have oodles of muzzle flip. I watch Sootch shoot and the gun barely moves. He is a shooter. Most are pretenders.
If, ONLY They put that energy into, a 2011. I am Blessed to have an Armond Swenson 1911 that I found @ a mom & pop, Gun store @ $400. !!! Everyone tries to buy it... & Irony of Irony's. The "Springfield " ZD, Has been solid. & Never let me down
they're just something about the 1911 that feels so natural when I had my VERY basic firearms training in the USN the Gunners made Senior Chief said you have experienced this I told him never with pistol he told the first class keep an eye on him he's a natural
