Massive improvements to the X over the XC.. would have preferred the speed twin clocks instead of the trident ones but the key ignition and lower seat height now make this the better choice over the XE.. although the price is lower it’s still too expensive though..
Love that Triumph have finally opened the 1200 Scrambler up to us shorter riders. Its the only thing that put me off buying an XC - the height was just a bit too much of a stretch and I didnt find the Street Scrambler as much fun. Another sterling review by the way. Keep up the good work dude!
so you’re going to buy one today ? i got the 2022 XC, i don’t mind the stretch. let us know which one you get ….. hey, you’re buying a motorcycle today !!!! that’s awesome
As the previous owner of a Street Scrambler (and current owner of an XE), I've never understood why Triumph didn't make a 1200 "street scrambler", so the X is a welcome addition to the range. I'd prefer a 19 inch front wheel, 4-piston calipers, and 20-25mm lower seat, but It's definitely a step in the right direction. Like the new instrument set up on the X. Always suffered "puncture anxiety" on the SS, so tubeless is good. Glad to see they have gone back to a normal key ignition. Wish they'd specified the SS two-part seat.
Think that's a good point on the 1200 street scrambler description. I've got the 900 and would love to go up to the off road biase XE, but my poor little legs wont reach 😒
I have a Street Scrambler and love it to bits but I'm seriously considering the new 1200X. At 6'3" I have no inseam problems with the XE but I just don't like the look and I'm not interested in the XE's greater off road pretensions, I have a "proper" off road bike for that. A 1200 Street Scrambler would be my perfect bike but the new 1200X is now much closer to that ideal than the XC/XE models.
@@phils2180 I think it depends on where you live. There's a big difference between a wet, muddy, rocky, narrow tree-lined green lane in Cymru and a gravel or dirt road in Australia or the USA.
Not to be a bad commentator, or state an obvious thing!, but It doesn’t matter how tall you are Bob, it’s your inside leg measurement that counts!. You can be 5’9”, but have a 29 inch, 31 inch or a 34 inch inside leg, which makes all the difference. A friend of mine is 5’4” and I am 5’8”, but we both have 29” inside leg seam. All that aside, love the videos, keep them coming. 😁👍🏍️
Doesn't matter what your inseam is. You shouldn't be trying to flat foot a bike with both feet anyway, even if you can. The proper way to hold up a bike is with one foot on the ground and the other foot on the peg - like a human kickstand. This allows you to tilt the bike over (just like when its on the kickstand) so you can reach the ground. If you are very short, you can scoot your butt over in the saddle so that one cheek hangs off and make it easier to reach the ground. If riders would learn this simple technique, all of this squabbling and hand wringing over seat height could end forever.
I had my heart set on a 1200 XE, I struggled with the test ride as I literally had to slide off the seat to get a comfortable footing at the lights. It really was a stretch for me at 172cm. I was gutted, so got the street scrambler, tarted that up to my spec and loving it. Looking at this now has tempted me with the lower seat, might have to have a butchers when I see what deals I can get on a Bobber in Jan/Feb when sales are well down, might get the 1200 X too if I like it and see what deal they’ll do of I p/ex the street scrambler, if not, I’ll add it to my hoard of bikes. Nice review, so the X is missing a few nice things from its pricing point but I’ll definitely change the shocks, get a custom seat made, I fancy loads of chrome on it so will talk to my custom shop and see what can be done. Will definitely get Hitchcox to make a custom exhaust and change the tyres👍🍻
I am saved with top spec Steve McQueen 2022, if this was the version in way back 2022, I would have chosen different bike. Idk, why people find it difficult using keyfob. Also in terms of suspension, it's not a better choice to go other than ohlins.
I have a 2019 Street Scrambler, a large part of the appeal is the “old school” speedo and halogen headlamp. This one is interesting, indeed. But, I wish they would have done a 1200 Scrambler and kept more of the old school aspects. However, can’t complain about a Triumph….such beautiful, smooth motorcycles. ❤
Even at the previous price, I still don't think they were expensive. Here in the US the 1200 was running at around 15 grand. Considering what you get it's not a high price for such a nice bike. I think the new lower stance helps to. I'm not really going to go off road, at least not deep out in the stx,so the lower seat is a little more relaxed. Thank you for bringing back the key for the ignition. These are nice bikes at a great price. If you want something nice it's gonna be a little more expensive. The X model is the one to go with. Love the color combo.
It saddens me to see brands like Triumph doing this to so-called top-of-the-range models like these! And on top of that, they try to make fools of their customers by cutting down on the quality of so many components such as the suspension and rear shocks, front and rear brake callipers, controls, screen, tank capacity, mudguard finishes etc etc and just dropping a couple of euros...I feel completely let down especially with the X model (ex XC)! I'm sticking with my 2019 XE, which for me is still far superior in every way! Cheers Bob!
Already have my name on my local dealers first Ash Grey X to arrive 🤘🏼. Scrambler vibe is my favorite bike but sold my Street Scrambler after several years wanting more power and got a speed twin. Now the speed is sold as i wait for the 1200 Scram. Best of both worlds.
Before I could not touch the ground on either model and I have owned 7 Trumpets in my 75 years, but now I will go test ride the 1200X. Pending that I might get one. FYI I have also owned 7 KTMs and lean more to the dirt. But I love the British twins, Oh and use to race a vintage 66 BSA 650/Track master frame and fire roads are OK with me to be able to have the 1200 everywhere else., Thanks Bob, Love your work.
That new 1200 X is perfect. I’m tempted to trade my 22 Speed Twin for it. That gray color is perfect. I’d add the lower seat and some hand guards. Maybe a rear rack for style and call it a day. Good job, Triumph. Smart.
I was looking at buying the outgoing model earlier this year and didn't like that the XC, despite nearly being the same cost as the XE, was missing quite a few features. Went for an Urban GS instead as it handles better. The new 1200 scrambler seems to have addressed most of the issues people had with the outgoing model. As is frequently the case I wonder what triumph were thinking with the tank paintjobs - why is there a giant triumph graphic all over the tank on the X model and the big 1200 on the XE, it's supposed to be a retro.
Love moto bob but let’s face facts, it’s less bike for less money. The bike is a lot less premium than last years plain and simple. Materials as well chassis
Triumph retro bikes are just the coolest bikes ever imo. I wouuldnt ride any other bike than a Triumph, they seem to be leading the way in every segment
@scottcalhoun5524 shaft drive is a hugeeee selling point imo. I only ride 6 months of the year because I can't be arsed cleaning a chain. Moto guzzi have big reliability issues though. My local triumph dealer offers lifetime warranty
@scottcalhoun5524 maybe. They're not well known where I live and maybe the reputation of unreliability is outdated. I wouldn't know any different. They are nice looking bikes imo and well priced
If I was in the market for one of these it would be the X. Lower seat, lower tech and lower price. The X is almost good value. I'll stick with my SCR950. NJ
I’m interested in the new X model. I love the look of the Triumph Scramblers, but I’ve stayed away from them because the seat height has always been just a little too tall for me. I’ve had a T100 and I currently own a T120 and a Speed Twin. I may be adding an X model to the stable when they become available in the States.
I'd love one of these if they'd take off the ride modes, go to the dual clocks of the T-series, and simplify the bike. Switchable ABS to take it off-road, good suspension, and we're set.
Oh I’m glad I bought my XE a couple years back lol This sure does seem like a downgrade. No more Ohlins? No more Showa, and smaller diameter for that matter? For not a lot of saving too. I weigh in at 240lbs and can jump across the two track railroad crossing near my house without ever bottoming out the suspension on the outgoing model, I wonder how the new suspension would compare? I do think they made the right move on the X model though.
I wonder if the updated key system can be transferred/integrated to the older models? As much as the keyless is convenient, the regular key system is preferred in my opinion.
Nice review! Not sure how you get your hands on them so soon! I think Triumph have squeezed everything people have asked for into the 1200X so it’ll be interesting to see how the models sell comparatively. Also, I freaked out for a second thinking I’d messed up timings for releasing content because I saw triumph official only released like 6 mins ago, then I saw your vid and immediately felt better 😂
Not to burst your bubble, but consider also that its a 200+kg bike, make sure to sit one a get a good feel of it...yes the centre of gravity might feel very low which is a good thing but if you are planning to go offroad even the smallest of rocks under a tire can put you in a position where all of a sudden you can't reach the ground anymore.
I owned an XC for two years and loved it, but looking at the list of component downgrades Triumph have made to the X it does make me wonder how the hell they have only managed to save £800 over the price of the outgoing XC ?. They have made the 'cheaper' X £300 more expensive then the original XC was at the launch date back in 2019. I just don't understand why Triumph have fitted all the components from their cheapest bike such as brakes, switchgear, clocks, footrests & indicators etc The brushed aluminium guards gave the bike a premium feel so they stick painted plastic ones on instead. No doubt the standard fit cruise control got deleted as well? Backward move Triumph 👎
I don't think you do understand how money, basic economics, and inflation works especially over the last 3 years. As a manufacturer so much has changed, the cost of materials, the cost of labour, the cost of parts, the cost of transportation, have all gone up enormously. Plus the constant changing of electronic parts from overseas suppliers, its a nightmare, so if it rides as well or better than the earlier model as well as being cheaper then that is a result for us and well done to Triumph.
First of all, thanks for the good introduction. For me as a XC Owner (Model 2020), is no need to the change the bike. That makes my wife happy. I don’t like the odometer on the X model. The one on the 400 X looks much better. They throw the keyless system away - well done.
Just so you know, Metal Mule make an either side and rear pannier rack that I had on my xc so I’m presuming something they’ll be doing something similar for the X if I the existing one doesn’t fit already.
Sounds like sensible product différentiation and use case. TracTive made four-way twin shocks for thé Street Scrambler, so maybe aftermarket will accomodate Hare Scrambles.
@@PyRoblaser this is so stupid how on a platform like the 1200 that cruise control isn't available for all models. That's the Scrambler X, Thruxton, Speed 1200 all without it.
Sad news for Triumphs 1200 scrambler range, not only have they rendered the Street scrambler completely obsolete, they are selling the XE for £300 less but you are losing a fully adjustable front and rear Ohlins setup which gave this line up a premium feel/look. The new dash is awful, looks like it’s ripped off a Triumph Trident, which was cheap looking at the best of times. Additional extras and accessories sound good though!
Like the look of them , but why reduce the size of the rear brake light ? In daylight those dastardly car drivers have even got more excuses to say , Sorry mate I didn’t see you braking 🤪🤪, keep them a decent size please 🙏. Ps I like the green colour 👍👍
I'd love to have more motorcycles that have powerful engines without all the expensive electronics. Same with cars. I should be able to choose what I want on my vehicle without being forced to buy a "premium package" to have the engine/transmission I want.
Finally a scrambler that will fit a small dude like me 😂 pretty excited for the driving tests. Does anyone knows if there is a quickshifter for the scrambler?
Pausing the video @5:56, maybe a minor detail but does the previous model had removable passenger foot pegs brackets like the 900 model? On this one they seem to be permanently welded to the chassis.
Why didn’t they bring out the X with a 19 inch front wheel if it’s not meant to be a hardcore off roader? Then it will steer better, and I’d consider it 🫣
You would have thought they could have made some improvement to that horrible exhaust system with its 3 heat shields. I would love to know if they have left the cooling fins on the right side of the engine as normal now so at least if you fit a low exhaust it doesn't look like someone has gone at the engine with an angle grinder. I can't understand why after they scrapped the front CAT unit and transferred the CATS to the cans in the previous model they didn't take the opportunity to stop cutting the stupid fins away as after all, it is another process and costs money.
If the new 1200X is more road orientated bike, a 19” front wheel would’ve been more suitable, that display is slowly taking this bike towards modern appearance and for some of us who still like analog it’s a bit of a…but that’s just me
So . . . X, does that make it a Twitter Triumph? Is the suspension as rebuildable as the Showa? If not, wouldn’t that make the “new” suspension more expensive? With respect to price - point, what’s the maintenance schedule, the cost for a seat that fits needs and is it possible to get an extended warranty just for the electronics? Critical questions aside, kudos to Triumph for hiding the tank’s pinch-weld, that one feature makes me want to check out the whole package.
While I appreciate the change for a more affordable 1200 scrambler.... I think they've gone a little too far in the other direction. If they had kept a the gauge of the XC then it would have been fine. But with the gauge of the trident, it feels too budget now. I'm in the market for a scrambler 1200 and hearing about a new entry level 1200 model got me excited as I was concerned about the height of the XC. But now seeing the new model, I'll be looking at the XC's and just switch out to lowering springs.
When they put tubular tires, improve the suspension and tweak the engine power of the t120 I will buy a new one but I see that they will never do it so I will look for something in another motorcycle brand
Hi guys need a suggestion to make decision i have pre booked triump scram 400x it is expected to be 3.10 in chennai on price but show room guys are saying that if i book speed 400 now i can get it at 265000 on road .....my purpose is city use mainly and little bit of off round and twice or thrice long ride(within 1000 to and fro).....i can save 50k if i buy speed 400 should i wait for scram or i can go with speed if i go speed can i do off roading and can i observe all bad patches of the round and also i am 5.6 (167cm) i can ride xpluse without issues can height in scram 400x be a issue
I had a new 2019 1200XE for 2 years but went back to the dealers 4 times during that time for a replacement gear change shaft. I got fed up in the end and part exchanged it for a new Suzuki V Strom 1050XT. Shame really because I absolutely loved everything about the bike except the keyless ignition (now gone) and the crap gearbox shaft 😢
Dont waste your money. Ive had nothing but problems with my 1200XE (all of which triumph refuse are warranty issues) Theyve replaced three sets of fork oil seals before 3000km. The chrome is wearing away on the forks already. Weeping rear shocks that are clearly wearing themselves apart. The airbox filter cartridge is able to open itself up from the airbox and let in debris. My front rim slowly lets air out due to the alloy becoming pitted. My front discs have warped due to the cheap metal framework that connects it to the rim. Get a ktm.
The new X seems like a good deal at 800£ cheaper that the previous XC but it actually isn’t since the equipment is way down, no more ohlins or brembo .. you pay less but also get way cheaper components imho
Really sat up hearing the new seat height for a 1200 then slumped at the price. Almost 12k with downgraded parts compared to 9k for a new 900 scrambler- don’t think so
102 liters of luggage capacity but the rear rack will only carry 2 kg so you can’t actually put anything in the dry bag if it’s on the rack. Only the 35 liter Givi semi-rigid tail bag is new. Also, the Dakar screen looks very much like the touring screen they already offered, so is only the name new?
Yep, I just compared the photo of this “Dakar” screen, and it’s exactly the same as the current “Tall flyscreen” that I have on my XC - which by the way I like better than this new X model. Apart from the better spec bits, the 840 height suits me - totally get how 795/820 opens up a wider market though
As someone whose first road bike was a 79 xs650, I didn’t own a motorcycle where I could flat foot both feet until about 10 years ago. It’s nice to see these ergonomic improvements in general. But it looks to me like Triumph just slimmed down the seat. I wonder if this will make them less comfortable on long rides.
looks like i got my 2022 XC version just in time. i’m not in favor of these changes, especially that my XC has the TFT display, BREMBO calipers, SHOWA and OHLIN suspension. i’ll keep my XC thank you very much.
Now that the standard seat height is lower on the X(C) would this be a good bike to get back into motorcycling? Looking for a long term bike. How manageable is the motor?
Finally Triumph wised up and realized not all of us have 34 inch inseams! I am 5'7" with a 30 inch inseam and the X model might just get me to trade in my t120 for something completely different.
Yeah it def is. Lesser brakes and suspension. Not sure what the hell they are doing. Bikes usually stay the same or get better not regress. XE now has 45 mill forks instead of 47 mills.
Non sense, so you are telling me that all that downgrade just for the high suspension problem? really? The screen is awful, small hard to see at first sight .... the exahust heat is a bigger problem. It looks that the changes have other origins...
Always a sad day when a bike gets a shorter seat. There's already so few bikes that are comfortable for riders 6'4" or taller and now there's one fewer.
Okay everyone complains about how high the prices are getting and complains they don't need all the high dollar equipment which I can understand. However, I don't understand the complaints when the manufacturers actually do that. I'm not sure on what planet it is reasonable to get all the trick and high quality components at Royal Enfield prices, heck Royal Enfield can't even do that with their big volume sales. I think Triumph made a smart move and we need to see more of the same.
