U.S. Marine Corps 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV) Platoon conducted a live-fire, waterborne gunnery range with Mk 19 40 mm automatic grenade launcher during Exercise Balikatan 24 in Oyster Bay, Philippines, May 4, 2024, marking the first overseas employment of the ACVs during their initial deployment.
Oyster Bay is 340 miles (550 km) southwest of Manila, the Filipino capitol city, and just 100 miles (160 km) from the Spratly Islands, a fiercely contested area in the South China Sea.

Speed is the key, you can’t kill what’s not there, smaller footprints, and a smaller support element. That’s makes us truly amphibious.
@Redfour5
@Redfour5 6 дней назад
There is no speed in those things. They swim like the rock they are very slowly all things considered. Faster than you can swim, but not a whole lot more than an olympic swimmer.

Great video! Beautiful place to hold exercises too! A huge thank you to the Philippines for letting the US back in! Those amphibious vehicles remind me of hippos! The way that hippos are underwater with just their eyes, ears and nose showing!

@Redfour5
@Redfour5 8 дней назад
I still remember 1974 when the AMTRAKS were new doing this in the Med, Sardinia as I remember. I got to do it in Vieques also. These appear faster but I'm wondering about rubber wheels vs tracs. I presume they are just fine without full tires and got 8 so... Of course, I bet these don't do like the Amtrac I was in once that instead of just swimming off, decided to dive...and dive...and dive...for like a minute, then stopping way down, leveling out and slowly, very very slowly coming back to the top and we went in for the landing... Being my first time and many others, we didn't know this wasn't normal with the doors on top leaking and trapped in the harness going down. In Vieques, it just swam off and hardly got our head wet. But that first one, I have no idea what happened... Nobody panicked, we were a good compliant bunch in back, the crew were cool all the way and acted like it was just another day in USMC paradise ridin their high tech horse for 1974. The ride into the beach was fun with the top open and I got to see the thickness of the top doors. They'd stop a light machine gun maybe a Ma Deuce, didn't seem too much more... So, enjoy boys. Never a dull moment in the suck.

@@Chilly_Billy Do a search on AAV in choppy water. I see one (I cant copy and paste) where the water very choppy and is going over the top but the hatches are open an the Marines are standing up. AND, I was in one that dove instead of just swimming off once. It went straight down, all 30 tons for like a minute with us strapped in sideways going down nose first and down and down until it finally righted itself and very slowly leveled out. I don't think in retrospect that was supposed to happen. This was 74 and they were new. It then very very slowly came back to the top and it swam off to the shore. We had full gear on in the back. Oh, we didn't have the hatches open and it leaked from the flip up top "doors." Everybody was cool and I was watching the crew to see how they reacted. They acted like it was no big deal... If they had been panicking I might have felt different.

You never rode on an AAV I bet. They sure didn't have much freeboard. I could sit on the edge going in and touch the water no problem. The water still sloshed over the top if you were in a wake of another... They used to let us open the top in the mid 70's on a calm sea as we went into the beach. I wonder if they stopped that practice. It was fun after the deep dive.

The MA deuce have served us well, but is a little antiquated for the 21st century. As an anti personnel and fire support for Infantry it's great, but as a vehicle mounted weapon that will engage light armored vehicles and fortification, not so much, they need to start jumping up to a 15mm or 20mm caliber as the standard vehicle mounted crew served weapon (latv apc tanks aav7 etcetera)

One hears cost, space, maint issues, fire hazard, ergonomics, more training requirements, and 87 other Excuses. Simple test: Give those that object to a life saving device the required choice... go off the ramp in one with or w/o an oxygen bottle. Make them put their own life on the line and see which they choose . . . ☆
