8 minutes in and I just gotta remind you that the spirit of Christmas is the joy of giving and rejoicing the birth of our saviour. It is not about complaining about waiting a couple of days for a model that I’m sure is a joy to build. 😅
Humbug! It certainly should NOT be about an opportunity / excuse for a company to take our money, mislead us and not explain why…I had to ask 3 times before getting a credible answer. Not good enough, customers should not be treated as a free bank!
I don’t want to be holding water for Airfix. The only models of there’s that I’ve built recent they have been the 1/48 scale spitfire and hurricane. But. Dealing with companies in general over the Christmas period is almost impossible. Whether it’s getting account accounting done from Richardsons or canola seed prices from Cargil. Sometimes you gotta hold things back to make sure things get done right. Delays happen. If the coin or something was botched would you not be complaining that you expect better? Over all thank you for the review. I hope this year I can get an air fix kit. Looking forward to it
@@westockfarmsltd6339 They could easily have avoided this with a simple email communication, as others have said, there was plenty of time...not take peoples money and then shut down three days later.
I just bought the 1/48 Naval version Buccaneer from Hobbycraft, with a 10% voucher code for just over £48, in future I will buy the kits when the price levels out and save a fair amount
Hi, Peter another great kit review. I have this kit on order. I already have the navy version. To me the Buccaneer always looks better in Royal Navy colours . Kind regards and have a fantastic 2024.
i am trying to get all the jets from the RN/FAA, the next will probably be the Buccaneer and i still hope Airfix makes a Scimitar...but will try to get the DBMK one via a cousin from Birmingham....Done , nothing against the RAF, but my cousin was a Sera Harrier FA2 technician hehe
Like the look of this do you remember the Torrey Canyon in 1967 it was on TV when Buccaneers from RAF Lossiemouth bombed it watched it on black and white tele 😄 the Blu Tack made me laugh will be interesting to see where this comes in this year's best kits 2024 but looking at it must be a contender great review worth waiting for but totally out of order with the money they should do the right thing and refund 👍
Peter hi ref the Vulcan Mission stencils The Vulcans on that years Red Flag were used to mask the Buccs radar return (the Vulcan was Quite stealthy anyway) in an attack formation, so the Vulcan would be flying along and get in close to the target with two Buccs tucked up under the wings very close only presenting one radar signal, the yanks would send out a an Eagle or Phantom to take care of the Vulcan suddenly the Buccs would drop out at V. low level (sneaky Bastards) and the F-15 would get a shock. tend give up the chase as they couldn't get that low and the radar couldn't look down shoot down very well, i was told this by an ex Bucc Nav i think he was on that exercise too Sea Eagles only used out of Lossie.
Peter, with the non detonating cord canopy, the seats on Buccs had a telescopic pole that came out of the back of the seat to pierce and shattered the canopy, then the seat went through the canopy frame.while my father was working at BAe Woodford in the 1980s,they had Buccs come in to Woodford for servicing, one of the Buccs during the service at flight sheds unfortunately hadn’t had the RBF safety pins fitted,so the seat was live while the engineer was working on the seat,he snagged the overhead ejection handles,so with the seat being LIVE,the steel pole fired out from the back of the seat, not sure if it went through his chest or his head, but it went through him,and the seat slammed him into the roof of the hanger before slamming him back down to earth,he was killed instantly, unfortunately no one knew where the blame was to be placed,Pilot for no fitting the pins,Ground crew for not fitting the pins,or the engineer for not checking the pins were fitted.
Great review Peter. The molded in detonating cord is weird indeed. Quinta studio have a 3d decal set for the Buccaneer. Otherwise, cutting it out on vinyl is another option. Seriously tempted to get one after watching this.
Airfix REALLY need to change the sculpt of their jet pilots....the helmets just look wrong in both shape and size...also they need to have the oxygen masks OVER the face... the way fast jet pilot figures SHOULD be.
It's a lovely kit Peter went together with no issues. It is pricey but a little less than a tamiya 1:48 ie tomcat , phantom and I enjoyed building mine just as much .....
I love your passion about this aircraft. There are many with better specs and a broader combat history but your connection, seeing them fly daily as a child, really is something that captures imagination and stokes excitement. Perhaps that explains my bizarre affection for the PC-3 Orion as they were stationed at my local naval air station. On the subject of having your money taken prior to having the product shipped…sadly that is something that is very common in the US. I pretty much assume my money is gone the second I place a preorder. I’ve never built an Airfix kit despite having a dozen or more kits in the stash but I’m intrigued by this kit, the new manufacture, your enthusiastic interest in this specific aircraft and, honestly, the look of the aircraft has grown on me… I’m putting in an order for one soon I think. Cheers.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab you should! Sorry to hear you’ve been under the weather. I don’t think you messed up with you Buccaneer build lacking the weights. You just need some nice high visibility red FOD covers for the intakes and Bob’s your uncle.
Anyone else notice the "red flag" scheme shown on the side of the box appears to be 2 shades of green camo but on the colour call out paint guide its coloured sand and brown camo.
Nice review, Not sure about the cribbing about taking the money, you were gonna get the model anyhow at some stage. We so used to getting things in a day for two we are not used to handing about. Christmas is a difficult time for shipping. Looking forward to seeing you build this baby. bit pricey IMHO.
Thanks but You misunderstand. It was a failure to despatch despite promising to do so and taking the money. Airfix have now apologised, I wasn’t wrong.
Although I have always wanted one of these in 1/48 scale, I think I'll wait to see a few build reviews on this one... a little dodgy on Airfix lately Dane
Hello Peter. The price is my only hold up here in Australia 🇦🇺 $144 is the same as $76 pounds at todays exchange rates. I want one but as you say I can get a lot more bangs for my bucks with say Tamiya for $10 more ?? But one day I will get one. It’s an odd but interesting aircraft 👍
All they needed to say was they were delaying shipping briefly because they were adding something special to the boxes. It would have been just that easy. Bad PR, Airfix
I had the original Buccaneer with a bunch of PE. Sold it off to some unfortunate around 15 years ago, but before I did I figured out how to glue the fuselage halves together. You have to start from the centre, then work your way out slowly each way. I don't think clamping was even necessary although some light clamping wouldn't have hurt. Oh well, looking forward to this one instead.
14:56 Peter starts review 👌TEN thousand lb bomb is a misprint.... ONE thousand lb is correct. The fox on 12 sqn badge is way older than their stay at Honington. It represents the motto "leads the field". Wing folding was always done at Lossie, as soon as the aircraft parked, airbrakes open so I don't see why it wouldn't have been done at Hon. The Sea Eagle was post '85. You probably saw Martel missiles at Honington. I feel the "Lossiemouth thing" is due to their "research" relying on current museum exhibits. The Red Flag option IS a Honington airframe, with the addition of some desert paint UNFORTUNATELY Airfix neglected to include the standard 208 sqn badge and flash to allow you to make a standard version!!! cheapskates GRR! I was a mech on 208 Sqn at Lossiemouth just after the move a looong time ago, and they only started painting the wrap around scheme around 1984, so the markings were the same as at Honington afaik. Shame Dog Sqn gets the box-art (and Coin) though. 208 Penetrate! I'm not sure I have the willpower to make this kit due to the lack of a standard 208 sqn scheme though. 2 Vulcans - possibly because the buccs hid below vulcans on 2 sorties to confuse the yanks - sort of a parasitic bomb load. Red star - US crews zapped them overnight with those.
Yes, I expected someone to pull me up on the foxes...I think the pub in Honington was probably pure coincedence...I agree with you on the research...sigh. That is why I bought the alternative decals. I deduced the Red Flag scheme was a Honington plane by the dates, too early for that model to be from Lossie. Great to see someone with such in-depth knowledge! 👍🏻😃
Alas £60+ is the going rate for any pretty much, new tooled 1:48 kit, all the more reason to use your stash up.. Saying that, if you shop around you can find this kits in the 60's price wise. 1
53.18 the rear seat is off set to the right and above and the front seat to the left hence the detcord is off set from the centre to be above the ejection seat centre.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Well. A pint in the late 1980s was approx £0.35--.40 and today we find a similar variation £3.50 - 4.50. Figures below are from 1979! There was a lot of inflation by the late 80s to be taken into account. First figures are 1979 list prices, the figures in parentheses at 2023 prices: Series 1: 45p (£3.04) Series 2: 60p (£4.05) Series 3: 90p (£6.08) Series 4: £1.25 (£8.44) Series 5: £1.65 (£11.14) Series 6: £1.99 (£13.44) Series 7: £2.50 (£16.89) Series 9: £3.60 (£32.03) There wasn't a Series 8 listed. The 1/24 aircraft were £4.99-£8.99 (£33.71-£60.73) with the Spitfire at £4.99 with the Stuka at £8.99. IF you take into account the inflation during six or seven years of the 1980s my divide by ten rule more or less works and puts things into perspective.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab I hear what you are saying but bear in mind that the number of models being made and sold when Airfix was at its peak means there were economies of scale that Airfix no longer enjoys, these modern kits are now specialist premium products made in the low 100s of thousands (if that) and not toys bashed out on the millions as they were in the 1970s.
The only thing to replace a Buccaneer is a Buccaneer.my issue with Airfix is,I pre-ordered the 1/24 Mk IX Spitfire, the one which arrived had all three canopy parts broken, still waiting for replacement parts, then MY grandchildren(youngest daughter) bought me another 1/24 Mk IX,and guess what,NO CLEAR SPRUE,now I await AIRFIX to replace both missing clear parts.
They are nice, simple kits…probably a good choice for you…but they don’t release new stuff anymore so not cutting edge. Good value though. Some of their kits are also reboxed by Revell and Hobby2000 so check Scalemates. 👍🏻
Great review as always Peter. I’ve got a huge sense of deja vu with this kit as it is, nearly part for part, the same as the 1/72 Buccaneer from Airfix, tooled in 2019. There are a few additional parts, such as the crew ladders, but most of it is exactly the same only upscaled to 1/48. I’m not sure whether Airfix should be lauded for sticking with a trusty design or castigated for being lazy and not updating the design for this larger scale.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab ANY effort on the pilots. Lets face it, these blobs have been around since the 1960s. It is impossible to believe that they cannot manage to hire a 3d modeller to make a few new ones - absolutely no excuse.
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab agreed Peter....the pilots are awful....give me Matchbox pilots....now those are pilot figures you would be PROUD to have in your model....Airfix jet pilots are only good for a diorama where the aircraft has just landed /taxied in or is about ti taxi out....for a fast jet model mounted on a stand in flying mode with the gear retracted they are just not right at all.
Shocking by Airfix to call the Paveway II a 10000lb bomb. it was actually a 500lb bomb. Not much difference!!! Detail looks OK, I did look for the INCDU (inertial nav unit) in the cockpit. It looked to be there in the instructions moulded with the pilots dash, but didn't see it in the plastic review. Would be worth drilling out the airbrakes holes if having them open. Can't see why it has taken a year since the S2C release to get the S2B released. It really only looks like a decal mod, with very few spruce changes (apart from op Granby etc weapons load).
