Airfix's biggest release of 2022, the all new-tool Spitfire Ixc in 1/24 scale, all British manufacture is here!
Can it be better than Tamiya's 1/32 version and is it better than the excellent new Airfix Anson kit?

I think on reflection that my 9/10 is a fraction generous as I forgot to mention in my summary about the poor split tyres design, & seam down the centre of one of the canopies. It's really an 8.5/10
@andyrichardsvideovlogs8835
@andyrichardsvideovlogs8835 Год назад
From my own example, I rated it 9.5/10. My criticisms are only one clip-tip option, less than inspiring colour scheme choice and that instruction book.

@@andyrichardsvideovlogs8835 Very Generous there Andy! (You might revise your score down later when building the exhausts and dealing with the bizarre split-chin cowling!) If we ignore wanting to support Airfix as a British company run by nice people, and are totally objective, it's hard to see any area where the kit is new, innovative or really moves the design thinking forward very much? The Anson seemed to exceed expectations whereas this one falls a bit short for me, and a shame as I really hoped it would continue the trend. It looks to me as if designed by someone who doesn't build models...😕 Maybe more benchmarking of the other kits on the market like Tamiya, Eduard etc would have given them more ideas.

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab and I have been very pleased with a number of Airfix's more recent offerings, even with some of their limitations etc. That said I'm sure whoever gets it or has got it like you, @Andy Richards and others. That a lovely build with a splendid result can be made with it.

Hi Pete, agree with you honest review score but in the instructions it says that the seam line on the canopy was unavoidable when replicating the shape accurately. Compared with the MkVb it looks a dream 😁

Definitely one for painting your own markings! I built a warped old-mold 1/24 Hurricane and following that battle, painted most of the markings. I was really pleased with them; tone the white down, make the red a bit more russetty, and play with the blue and yellow; then lighten the colours a little with buff and you can get the 'fade' of worn sun-bleached paint...

Nice review Peter. I am so excited I would probably give 9,5 - the middle section of the canopy bothers me the most - this transparency doesn't look as good as the other clear parts and may create the distortions. The price is reasonable for such amazing model. I am glad Airfix is producing this kit in Europe. I hope someone will print decals for one of the Polish Squadrons. Regards from Poland

@ 3:08 I was lucky to have received this kit for my recent birthday, and I just wanted to say that I think it is a superb kit that has been manufactured with some painstaking attention to detail. I wanted to say that before you actually started your review Peter because I wanted to be able to say what I think of your review with honesty about my opinion. 1, First question for you already, what is it that makes the “CAD” photography something that is “less said the better”?, personally I like to see some of those C.A.D photos, I realise that they are there as a marketing opportunity to get customers to buy it based on them enticing a undecided customer, but most model makers realise that they are C.A.D and that the actual product is probably not going to be as good, still good but C.A.D can be deceptive to inexperienced model makers or those buying it as a gift, but overall I like to see them as part of the whole process of buying the kit through to the finished product (that is if you intend to build it or stash it). 2, in my opinion having two sprue’s in one bag is totally acceptable, apart from clear parts of course, I would prefer to have a small amount of scratching etc to repair than have one sprue individually bagged and waste plastic and possibly be taken into the final price equation, and that might seem a bit hypocritical, considering the amount of plastic used to actually manufacture it, plus the box itself and I am worrying about an extra few bags, but, and there is always a but, if you multiply the number of extra bags used with the number of kits manufactured then I would suggest it is not a few bags, it would probably be thousands, then multiply that by the number of kits the industry manufacturers every year and throughout the world and the amount of bags used would be in the millions, and if that amount goes into landfill, or whatever method different countries use, then we, as a whole, are contributing a huge amount of waste that is not necessary, and that in turn has an effect on the environment, our environment that needs cleaning up. Just for your information Peter, I am not an eco warrior, but I am a concerned father, grandfather and great-grandfather who does not want our beautiful planet and the environment completely ruined for my descendants to live in it, or miss seeing the beauty or planet has (at the moment) for them to enjoy. I sincerely hope that most model makers reuse or recycle as much as possible. The decal that you described as being other pilots @ 10:4o+ is actually the ground personnel responsible for the aircraft, it is just how the USAAF operates. The issue with the exhaust stacks is definitely an own goal by Airfix, I have not started on my kit yet but it seems to me that an aftermarket kit would be the easiest way around it, failing that maybe using a 3d printer pen could be used to make a new seam, a weld line using liquid putty, maybe a piece of fishing line or very thin rubber hose from a motorcycle kit, a piece of heated and stretched sprue that could be cut to length and attached, but those are thoughts straight of the top of my head. Now that multiple people have pointed out that the canopies were provided because of the manufacturing process not being able to produce a replica without the seam line so you get a slightly different canopy without the seam would you give Airfix the .5 mark deduction back to their score?, overall I agree with your review but I don’t agree about the plastic bags issue and the chin fairing being a two piece part is small potatoes that I don’t think is an issue, but each too their own. 9.5/10 in my opinion, and only because of the split tyres.

Thanks for taking the time to do this. The canopy looks a real issue- similar to the Typhooon, and the exhausts wtaf? For me it's going to be how the thing builds and how much clean up of mold seams, sink marks etc. I'll wait until others build before investing. But when I look at an Airfix kit I generally think great subject, but somehow no finesse compared to say GWH, Eduard, Tamiya etc. I mean could they slide mould the barrels for the cannons, and the interior details look a bit clunky. Plus no canopy masks or any photoetch which are more or less standard with other manufacturers? I may pass on this and feed my Spitfire fetish with Kotare.

Thanks Peter for saving me some money. Given the scale, I think it is a very disappointing scale rendering of the Spitfire IX. All that terribly soft detail, that is sometimes simplified significantly, plus the appalling windscreen with stress fractures and that poor front panel amongst other misses including the box art. Since the Spits lack the Pytram drop tanks, that were carried by that squadron and others on the day.
