Not a problem! Thanks for checking us out.

I had a crap first night in mine in the Lakes due to it flapping around in the wind. As you say, the lack of anchor points / guys down the sides means it gets battered. Also I found the inner door doesn't roll up very well, and seems to droop in your face. Another potential problem I noticed was if you have the plastic cups fitted to the bottom of your trekking poles, they rub the fly, so could cause damage. Overall, I'm pretty underwhelmed with this tent, it should be £60 tops, still considering if it is getting sent back to Alpkit :(

Completely agree with you Adam, I personally would've preferred a pyramid-style tent or a Lanshan-style trekking pole tent. Sorry to hear about your flappy night!

It pitches much better if you get the foot pole in the correct place. Did you put your foot pole inside the seam as per the video?
@adamrainsbury

@@willadams6217 I pushed the pole through the sleeve like it says in the instructions. First time was difficult and definitely felt like a risk of damage, a faff too, but not so bad after. I see you recommend an alternative method below - I'll give it a shot, see if it works for me. Also, I agree on crossing the guy lines: definitely better. I have bought some of the stick-on line locks @HeapsWellNice suggested, decided to do some mods and persevere.

@@adamrainsbury Yeah I'm currently in communication with Alpkit about it and it does appear to be an error in the instructions. I'd be interested to know how it compares for you putting the pole on the outside.

@@willadams6217 Hello, I went to Alpkit in Keswick and showed them your comment about the tent being set up incorrectly. They, in fact, confirmed that Peter has the tent set up correctly! "Tom" in the video set it up incorrectly.

Hi this was a good review of the tent, id have to warn you though, towards the end you mention taking this out on the fells when its windy, i really think just looking at the design of this tent it will not be good in the wind. This looks like its designed for low level trails in the summer at the most, just be careful you could end up having a bad experience, but all the best, was a nice review.
@heapswellnice
@heapswellnice 3 года назад
Hi Martin, thanks for the kind comment. This is certainly not a first choice for the fells, I agree with you there. Would be interested to see how it would do out of pure curiosity, with additional guy lines as mentioned. I agree though it’s best use would be low level wooded areas with minimal wind.

I had mine in the garden during that massive storm earlier in the year. Left it out over night, it was still standing morning. Can't say the same for several tiles on the garage roof. Also stood up to 50 mph. gusts at Glen Coe mountain resort.

Hi Guys. Thank you for an objective review. I liked it so much, I went our yesterday and bought one. You are right about the side panels needing a guy. What is the product that you suggested to use to attach ones own guys to the side panels? Namaste-Pette

HI Pedro, check these out from our friends at Tread Lite Gear, they are perfect for adding some guy-lines to the side panel's of the Polestar! www.treadlitegear.co.uk/pair-tread-lite-gear-fully-bonded-dyneema-composite-fabric-dcf-stick-on-patches-515-p.asp Happy Camping :)

If you put the foot pole in the correct place, the fly pulls out much better, I don't think it needs side guys if pitched correctly. I think a lot of people are getting the foot pole in the wrong place, it doesn't go inside the fly, that's just a seam.

I actually empty my Osprey Rook dry sacks for food and clothes down the bottom and ruck sack inside accross the top which allows a higher pillow which I like. bit coffin like but light and I am not expecting the Hilton

True but let's be honest, staying in the Hilton would be good! Sadly I sold the Polestar after 1 use - I'm not a fan of big exposed side panels on my tent. Glad you've enjoyed yours!

Did you ever stick on those DCF patches, and did they work? I was under the impression that DCF GUY patches don’t stick to siliconised fabrics. Be interested to if I can modify mine in the same way.

Hey! Have a look into these, the DCF patches won’t work for obvious reasons (the polestar isn’t DCF): ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/grip-clips/

Thanks, good review, does it have any ventilation options at the foot end?
@heapswellnice

Thanks! Yes there is a mesh panel in the foot end for ventilation. You can just catch view of it around 06:03 when we’re clipping in the tent inner. Hope that helps!

Yuk. Huge, unsupported panels on the sides - will flap like crazy in any wind and intrude on the living area. And the door doesn't protect the drip line of the sleeping area - this is a showstopper in rainy UK conditions . If there's any wind at all your kit gets wet as you move in and out, and you can't keep the door open for views, cooking and venting when it's inclement. Seriously underwhelming...

Completely agree Ben! I was hoping they'd come out with a Lanshan-style tent. However, for their first hiking-pole tent it's surprisingly stable when the head is wind facing!
@willadams6217

Hi just to let you know - you put the pole at the foot end in the wrong place. I know because I did this first time. Indeed the instructions tell you to do that I even phoned the store to check and they also said to put it in that sleeve, but that's not correct. It doesn't go in the 'sleeve' indeed that's not a sleeve it's just a seam. The pole goes under the flap at the end where the guy line is attached. So on the outside of the flysheet, not on the inside. If you look at Alpkit's video you can see how the pole is meant to go. You can see the correct placement here in Alpkit's video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CwJoZHHm3zE.html Hope that helps.
@willadams6217

Also the guys from the trekking poles should form a cross, it's much sturdier then.
@heapswellnice
@heapswellnice 3 года назад
Hi Will, that’s really interesting. We just took it out again to give it a go. Couldn’t manage to pitch it how AlpKit has it in their video. There was too much tension to clip the pole in. Additionally there’s no reinforcement in the top and the pole sleeve is clearly marked out with grey tabs. Not sure why they would go through the trouble to include this if it was not meant to be pitched that way. As for the crossing guy lines, that was my initial thought as well. After looking at them, crossing creases the tabs and doesn’t look quite right. Agree to disagree I guess 🙂 I’m happy you found a pitch that works well for you, happy camping!
@willadams6217
@willadams6217 3 года назад
@@heapswellnice Yeah it pitches way better with the pole on the outside, and much easier to get the pole under the flap rather than threading it through the inside seam. You'll probably also notice that if you put the pole on the inside as per the instructions then the little red alloy feet don't point in the right direction and pulling out the peg loop twists the fabric awkwardly. I'm sure it's a mistake in the instructions to thread the pole through the inside, it won't survive long doing that.
@willadams6217
@willadams6217 3 года назад
@@heapswellnice Just been speaking to Alpkit today and the guy in the Alpkit video I linked to who has the pole on the outside under the flap is Rowan and he is the designer of the Polestar. So it certainly looks like the instructions are printed incorrectly.

@@willadams6217 I also own this tent and tried to do it the way you said, but like them it's almost impossible for me to do it. Can you please make a video and show us? Otherwise, why did Rowan create a sleeve on the inside of the tent for the pole to go into?? I am so confused :(
