New Amargasaurus Paper Trades Spines For Fins - Will It Hold Up?

Sauropods are pretty boring. They stayed the same for over one hundred million years till they got smacked to death by a super-fast space ball rock. Tiny heads, long necks, long tails, rotund bodies, and four columnar legs. Well…for the most part. The parts that changed between the different lineages of long necked leviathans, were the backbones. Everything from the base of the skull to the tip of the tail differed from one species to the next.

Anybody calling sauropods boring may be a tad cynical. There's nothing boring about them. One must look at the "fine print". There are such series of different species spanning a large interval of sizes that inferences can be made, for example, about the relationship between body weight and limb diameter, or tail and neck lengths AND body weight vs. thermoregulatory needs. Neck sails or humps in Amargasaurus et al. might be a more extreme example of adaptive thermoregulatory features in species with shorter neck and tail lengths or for thriving in warmer climates.

Amargasaurus is definitely one of my favorite dinosaurs mainly because I'm a big Pokemon fan and Aurorus is actually based on the sail interpretation of this dinosaur, so I'm really happy that that interpretation seems the most likely these days. I love it when my 2 favorite interests overlap in such a specific way. though, Fossil Pokemon in general are surprisingly accurate from obvious comparisons like Omanyte and Omastar being based on Ammonites to the more specific like Aurorus. Makes it really interesting to see which dinosaurs resemble the Pokemon most closely even if its not intentional like Bastiodon, who seems to resemble Bravoceratops expect with eyebrow horns that you'd see on something like Kosmoceratops

I think the reality was probably somewhere in the middle; mostly sail, with the tips possibly exposed/keratinized. That seems to hit a sweet spot of various functions as a display structure, thermoregulator, and defense. The back buffalo-hump providing the ability to swing this swiss army neck around to scare off predators or rivals, stab belligerents, and attract tinder matches.
@allthelittleworms
@allthelittleworms 2 года назад
I remember just a month before the paper came out somebody had told me that they were spines and that it only made sense that they'd be spines due to their orientation on the neck, making them optimal for use as defense, especially in bajadasaurus. just goes to show you can never be sure about these things. I personally thought the spines looked much cooler but this is all still really interesting to read about
@neoqwerty

It could be both, I mean. The oarfish has this huge, spiny fin going down its entire length, and I've heard warning stories from some people handling some spiky-fin fish and getting their fingers cut or stabbed by the extremely sharp things. A convergent evolution thing that gives a dinosaur stabby fins isn't all that farfetched when we can see fish doing the same thing. Also could be a lionfish thing: some spines are fused, some have cool-looking "lobes".

I saw a commenter that stated that perhaps they could have been used to produce rattling sounds, and I can't stop thinking about it. Imagine you come upon an amargasaurus. Immediately, it poses in a defensive stance with it's legs apart for better traction and balance, extending it's tail almost completely straight out behind it, lowering it's neck in your direction, like that of an aggressive goose. The sauropod shakes its neck, the extended spines clash together, creating a deep rattling noise, similar to male deer in rut. I can see that being a very possible use for the exaggerated spines, although I'm not sure if amargasaurus had a neck flexible enough to lower at an incline, like a goose can. Still, even if it couldn't bend that way, it could still use it to produce sounds.

You say, ambiguous, for the evidence supporting the keratin sheath Idea, and was improbable for the spines of Amargasaurus. BUT! I may add the hypothesis is not completely ruled out of the conversation (besides, I liked the spikey look), and no one said that both hypotheses were prevalent in the animal's anatomy. Thus my reconstructions of the beasts take some artistic liberties and only leave the ends of the spines sharp and pointy. I will honestly understand anyone who tries to critique my (frankly) personal decision (I know I would). But I just want to keep the paleoart open to Ideas and not completely rule art possible anatomical characteristics that amargasaurus may or may not have had. (At the time of posting this comment, I haven't actually sent any kind of paleoart regarding amargasaurus on to the internet yet)

I thought they'd be for defence?

South Amarica was a hotspot for unique animals ever since it separated from Africa.

I feel like they'd most likely be "sails" used for heat regulation, similar to elephant's ears... with a secondary defensive function. Those big sails would make it a little harder to attack the neck. The predator would only really be able to come in at the underside to avoid contending with the sails. They were possibly for display purposes as another side function, but for some reason I keep leaning toward heat regulation as the main function. I don't think they'd be fatty humps mainly because that would be loads of extra weight on an already cumbersome neck. I'd imagine they'd have significantly reduced mobility with big ol' humps on their necks, too. I can admit that I'm probably wrong as I am no anatomy and physiology expert. Hell, I'm not even an amateur. Same with paleontology. But that's what my gut is telling me from what I've heard and read.

I think, if it were true that they were mostly heat regulation devices, why didn't any other similarly sized sauropods evolve structures like this? To me the spiked hypothesis makes more sense because they would've made decent defensive structures but I'm not a researcher so if they say it was probably connected then there's a good reason for that.

I've thought about that. Especially when you take in to account dreadnoughtus or some of the other, much larger sauropods that existed appear to lack similar heat regulation systems. But what keeps bringing me back is convergent evolution. "Crab" shaped bodies have evolved many times, wings have evolved many times and so on. I can't recall any dino, off the top of my head, that we're certain of them having such adaptations for heat regulation, but it just seems like one of them would have potentially developed something similar. So I can wholly admit it's just conjecture. And I'm fine with being wrong. Haha

@@allthelittleworms Reminder that spiny-fin fish exist and despite having fleshy bits, their fins are still DEFINITELY able to stab the shit out of someone's grabby hands. (And some of them that escape my brain right now even weaponized the edge of their fins' skin-bits and made it sharp enough to cut as well.) It could still be a defensive structure with the connection!

Why is it always either or? Why not a small hump, then a sail with keratin covered tips?

Don't you know anything? They flap them like wings and flew around like birds. And they could shoot the spins out spears and then use them in fire and ice attacks.

Well i use these in a game, I go fins. But there still are dorsal rays which could be hardened much like Bullhead Catfish.. so yeah still got a high defense. Either nope and poke or flashy no slashy still works as a carnivore still goes wait wtf is that..
