I’m at the Taunton branch of Antiques On High (5 stores around the UK) and I’m chatting to the co-owner Vincent Page. Vincent and Lesley from Antiques On High are opening an antiques auction in Taunton (possibly more branches to follow) and their buying and selling fees have been slashed! They’ll be charging 10% for buyers and 10% for sellers. This is unheard of in the UK and is also the lowest auction charge in the UK !
Vincent explains how they can make it work and still make money?
The new auction room is called Aloysius Fortescue & Smythe and the first auction sale will be in January 2024
Antiques On High have 5 branches in the following locations around England
Oxford
Sidmouth
Bowness on Windermere
Taunton
Harrogate
Dealers / buyers / sellers get in touch here: www.antiquesonhigh.co.uk
Do you have any interesting antiques, vintage items to feature here on my channel?
Do you want to book me for a talk? See www.david-harper.uk
Get in touch with me! dk.harper@yahoo.co.uk
Thanks

It's about time..some Auctions are charging 35%.. I thought that would kill the game ,..time to stop the inflation
@OriginalNethead
@OriginalNethead 8 месяцев назад
The problem with "well inflation means we have to charge X..." is savvy buyers know they'll get socked for the extra fees at the end and they bid (or refrain) accordingly. That means less money for everyone in the end. Prices end up DE-flating to the point where it's not even worth selling a lot of things.

Love this idea Vincent! Fees are insane nowadays 😢

Thank you Danny, this is one of the main reasons for doing this, in our opinion the fees are simply too much.

About time someone took auctions back to what they once were - a chance for buyers and sellers to both get a fair deal. Best of luck.

Those percentages are very reasonable indeed. I think the general public have no idea how much it costs to run a business, rent, business rates, utilities and staffing etc is massive. I think some people think items just magically catalogue and numbered etc all by itself 🤣

Good news for both public and trade...for the auctions simplicity and absense of greed will go a long way in bringing back the volumes of business needed to boost overall good feeling between all participants

Thanks for this refreshing video. Absolutely love the attitude and perspective that Vincent and Leslie are applying to their business. The world needs more people that are not afraid to live out their convictions without worrying about what "the Joneses" will say! I'm sorry I'm not in the UK, but if I were...they would be sure to have a new client! By the way, I almost didn't recognize Mr. Page without his Hawaiian shirt. ;)

At the start, auctioneers were allowed to charge the sellers commission ok. But then they started to charge both a flat fee but by the end of the 1990s the major auctions up their rates due to London property running costs. This then spread to the country rooms. Then the London lot change direction again become more dealer like (but without buying a single item). This item by AFS sounds very promising and could have a larger knock on affect as well as help furniture regain its value, which at the moment unbelievably low (because of the high commission, etc. Good luck, and I will follow this very closely.

I want a Vice-style auction house!!! Even the on line auction houses here (items housed in seller's premises, so no in-person viewing, extra fat handling fees in addition to shipping costs, and yet next to no overhead) are 15% here. The sellers pay a fee too. Buyers have to pick up on the date specified or lose both money and item with no recourse. Talk about How To Lose a Potential Customer Forever 101! (chases me off but quick, I assure you. Zero accomodation for disabilities either, btw.) A certain E-named auction site charges about 25% OR MORE seller fees on Jewelery and some other items. And that's if you don't pay the blackmail, aka "promotion" fees. I agree that the fees being charged now are so high the auction room/format won't be viable for long. Overcharge customers too often and soon you won't have any. They'll all be shopping with Vince instead!

I really wish you all the very best in this groundbreaking venture. I have been saying for years how ridiculous the difference between what buyer pays at auction and the sum the vendor receives. I really hope it has a ripple effect. I started my working life as an antiques auctioneer some 60 years ago before moving over to be a dealer. I will be watching with great interest to see what happens.

Thank you all for your supportive comments, I'm sure we will upset a few people but thats just the way it is, everyone needs to have a fairer crack of the whip so to speak, generally speaking we feel as though fees charged by most auction houses have gone through the roof, now if you happen to be on the receiving end of it then the chances are we will not been looked at favourably and I'm sure we will be sneered at by some, but how many would bet against us making it work?

10% will bring in more customers and thus more turnover.... which is needed as if you dont get new blood, things will dry up... no matter how well you are known.

i bought a lot at a well-established auction house yesterday on the basis of their catalogue description of the lot saying that it included a 17th century religious book...after the sale i looked through the books and there was in fact no 17th century book...only a 19th century one...i was ripped off...and on getting back home i binned them all... i'd like to know what rights you have as a buyer in such circumstances... it's definitely put me off auctions... i had thought that auction houses were honest and upstanding business-wise... but sadly my negative experience now leads me to think otherwise.

Books at auction are a big risk, picked up a lot a few months ago from one of the main SW auction houses and realised once I got them home they where absolutely infested with bugs inside the spines! Whole lot in the bin and then out of paranoia sprayed my car and whole house.
@eodnhoj8387
@eodnhoj8387 8 месяцев назад
@@alexj3185 i went to a viewing at the same auction house a month or two ago to see a book from 1652...i asked the person in charge of the viewing if the book was complete in terms of pagination and he said we haven't time to check that all the books are complete...so on that basis you might buy a very expensive book and find out when you get it that half the pages are missing!!...that's crazy...and if you ask for a condition report is the guy then going to check?... from his response i doubt it... with the lot i bought yesterday all that i wanted was a seventeenth century book in whatever condition...with or without bugs...but what i got was a nineteenth century book...and there's a huge difference in price and rarity between the two... whether their guys weren't too clever at reading roman numerals or else it was a typo in the catalogue or just sharp practice i don't know...but i'm going to be ever so wary of buying at auction in future.

Instead of unnecessarily emphasizing that the guy is a 'disruptor' how about accentuating the more important facts that auctions will be much cheaper for buyers and sellers and consequently you would expect the guy to increase the volume of his auction business considerably..... you would imagine!?
