I had to cut myself off too from buying more I kept buying them telling my friends all the things I was going to do to each one. Finally one of my buddies called me out and asked. "When's the last time you finished one?" So now I'm not aloud to buy another until all the projects I have are done. 😂

I would like to see the jazz bass worked on and playing. Maybe stick two music man pickups in between the Jazz pickups and have two outputs. 😂

OMFG - this is probably the most epic unboxing video I've ever seen 😂 The moment when you moved the 3 boxes into frame... fabulous! On another note, the video title might have given that bit away, had I only read it ... Still excellent pacing and tension building from a story-telling perspective!

Very cool finds! Excited to see what you do with them and very surprised you have limited humbucker experience like that short scale. I have played a G&L L-2500 for years and love the versatility. Maybe you can add some electronics to that short scale bass to do something similar, since you have to fix the electronics anyway. Always enjoy your videos, thanks!

Yeah it's one of the obvious holes in my experience, I love Stingrays but I've never owned one or played out with one. The very first bass I built on this channel was a 5 string with 2 MM style humbuckers but as a prototype that whole bass was a bit of a mess, I think I played 2 shows with it and scrapped it. It'll be good for me to spend a bit more time with those pickups and see how they handle, Cheers.

It feels very naughty and indulgent and unhinged, but I am glad we get to experience it vicariously through you. That Explorer bass looks extremely cool!

Fun day in New Zealand! Must admit, I would like the Warwick, myself, but we'll watch whatever you do with any of them. BTW did you get my email re PCBs?

I’d say that Aria is from 2001 purely based on the MM pickups. Aria seemed to slap MMs on every model they put out in the early 2000s
@fanbladeinstruments
@fanbladeinstruments 8 месяцев назад
Yes, it's an odd one, if it was an earlier model then I'd expect to see a model number CSB-xxx on the headstock and it would be made in Japan, of the later models I can't find any single example of that body with those pickups or that bridge. Also it's a carved top which is a rarity on a Cardinal bass, most just have beveled edges so it's a either a rare model or it's been modified or both, possibly even some kind of prototype but then it wouldn't have a production serial number. It's a genuine oddity.

@ChrisHopkinsBass 8 месяцев назад
@@fanbladeinstruments I’ve lusted over a cardinal for years and yeh they definitely never had MMs in plus Aria changed their logo from the Pro II one in the early 2000#. I’ve got a late 90s Samick made Aria 5 string that I have only ever seen in 4 string mode. It’s got normal 4 string PJ pickups. I’m wondering if it’s either a 4 to 5 string conversion or a genuine one/off prototype. Aria research can be an absolute rabbit hole
@ChrisHopkinsBass
@ChrisHopkinsBass 8 месяцев назад
I think it’s early 2000# based on the neck heel. I’d expect a 4 screw plate if it was an 80s aria but I’m gassing for one of those now

My partner is very understanding and trusts me enough to just let me get on with doing my thing. As long as I'm holding up my end of the bills and the housework I have free reign to follow whatever musical impulses I may get. I nearly bought a grand piano once and she took some convincing but eventually said yes. I didn't wind up buying it but I've banked that permission for later if I need it😉

Oh, wow! What a treat! Y'know, I'd normally pay good money to NOT have to touch a jazz bass, but I can't deny how good they sound. Dang! That P, tho, is an absolute dream! Maple fretboard with glossy finish. It doesn't get much better than that... maybe with a black pick guard. 🤔 I don't have any experience with Music Man style basses, but I'm very curious about them. If I were to buy one though, I'd prefer it with a single pickup. Nice collection! 👍

I have quit a few Aria Pro 11 basses amd a couple of guitars. The Fernandez that you have is very close to an Aria Pro ll zzb standard. Explorer shaped. The Korean Aria's are good but the older ones from Japan are monsters. Matsumoku factory is the factory where they were made. Aria made some 32" scale in the early to mid 80's. In fact i have a lot of Fenders, old and newer but im just looking for Japanese basses and guitars. I guess im a bit like you im really a bass player who enjoys playing guitar at home for my own enjoyment.

That sunburst Jazz should be first. If you're taking suggestions... Those tuning machines have got to go. Some nice Gotoh GB-2s or GB-11Ws would give that bass a nice profile as well as improved tuning stability. The sound of that neck pup thumps. Might be a great candidate for some flatwounds.

You can never have too many guitars 😊! It maybe the camera angle, foreshortening effect or something else but to me the Jazz bass appears to have a Precision size neck at the nut. Too wide for a Jazz but common on copies, especially those aimed at beginners. As you have a Precision in that lovely lot would you slim the neck down to Jazz bass dimensions if it is oversize at the nut?
@fanbladeinstruments
@fanbladeinstruments 8 месяцев назад
Beautifully spotted, yep, it's got a 41mm nut putting it firmly in P territory. The other jazz bass I mentioned, the fretless one, also has a P size neck so I'll most likely keep them both the same. I kinda prefer the slightly wider necks, I've played a few jazz basses over the years and the only one I actually liked was a pencil thin Squire. Unfortunately that neck developed a twist after 4 years of constant gigging and I couldn't bring it back, I've never found another jazz neck that felt so right to me as that one, but P necks seem to hit a different sweet spot that's a lot more open to variation and it's easier for me to find ones that I like. Thanks.

Wow, my wife would kill me if I bought 5 basses 🤣Really digging that Warwick. $35 for that Jazz??? Crazy! The Aria and Fernandez pretty sweet too! What site are you getting those through? Kinda jealous here...

www.jauce.com They're an English language portal into various Japanese auction sites, you buy Yen through them and bid on the auctions, then when you win they organize with the sellers to have it delivered to their warehouse and pack it up for international shipping. You have to pay for their services though, they get you coming and going and shipping all the way to NZ isn't cheap, that's partially why I bought so many, I could save a bit on the shipping and the banking fees etc by buying in bulk. $35 for the jazz, yes, but by the time I average out what I actually spent it worked out to about NZ$350 per bass, which is still pretty good, that's half what I would pay locally for the Warwick, and less than a third of what the Fresher is worth. If I was buying the jazz on it's own it simply wouldn't be worth spending $150 to ship a $35 bass to me, but folding that cost into the others makes it a bit more viable.

@@fanbladeinstruments jauce is in my bookmarks for quite some time now :-) I bought my Aria Pro II Rick copy through them, it was a good bid, but the shipping to Croatia ruined me (the war in Ukraine just started and their usual shipping company cancelled all shippings to Europe, so I had to either wait for the naval shipping, or pay more than double for the GLS - of course, I couldn't wait). Anyway, still a good deal for me, taking all that into account. Very nice source of vintage japanese guitars.

Probably not, I can move pretty seamlessly between 4 and 5 strings but if I strung a 4 like a 5 then I'm sure my brain would throw a few fits trying to work out where the notes are🤣🤣
