I was going to connect the circuit breakers to the main busbars when I discovered this 'new' battery design (at least for me it was...). It allows having the main positive and negative connection close to each other at any location of the pack. Amazing!
Back to the main task of connecting breakers to the bus bars: here we also made some changes to the overall design to keep the cable runs short and clean. I think this is a good setup and design now. We have made all main connections and can now concentrate on other aspects of the #Battery2.0
Digital torque meter (it's really good!):

Exactly, it will be and already is a true art piece. I just hope there won't be 3.0 of the same battery, at least nothing major

Hello Andy, I am from the nature Island of the Caribbean, Dominica. I have been watching your videos for a while now and I must say that there's never a dull moment, I just love your style and your accent, when I first watched your videos I told myself this man is from Germany because I worked with a few Germans building a brewery in my country. Keep going bro we a watching. Oh and the next time you want to say "shit" please say it in German I like to hear it but can't spell it.

How about mounting the BMS from the underside of the top shelf? That way all the heavy cables can be run from the top of the circuit breaker to the battery and gives you flexibility to adjust the length of the negative cable. Then the bottom of the breaker can connect to the bus bars like you once mentioned.
@MistaTerps
@MistaTerps 2 года назад
I also think you should mount the BMS up somewhere if you can. It looks a bit weird there just laying on the shelf taking up space. I'd end up Using it as a coaster for my tea 🤣

NICE!! Looks Great, can't wait to see the finished product. 2 things. 1. A 20-30mm vertical offset of the holes in the busbars would have given more clearance for passing cables. 2. Use nylon thumb screws to secure the busbar covers. No tools required for disassembly with the battery in position.

Andy, could you install additional standoff insulators in the positive bus bar so that the bus bars are on different planes. This would allow you to easily route the positive cables in front of the negative bus bar with much more clearance. Also, instead of drilling the cable connection holes on the same horizontal plane on both bus bars, re-drill the holes on one bus bar an inch above or below the other bus bars holes. This would eliminate running cables over the adjacent bus bars cable connection bolts.

Andy, a lot of work and thinking. Why didn't you separate both busbars on the back more and set the circuit breaker in between? You could even put one busbar at the back and the other one at the front. So you wouldn't need to cross positive and negative cables. You should also have used special contact grease like NO-OX-ID to avoid oxide building up.

25:10 Battery 3 announcement - at least the spot for it has been found. Can't wait to hear about the summary and lessons learned for from Battery 2.0 Time for the next SPAT test, better known hier as the Bierbüchsentest, but I guess Bierbüchsentest would be too complicated for the non german viewers compared to bombenfest

Hi Andy. Could you or someone point me In the direction for some of those spacers you have to mount the busbars to the shelf wall. I love following your channel, so happy you're doing your thing, my cells should arrive in a couple of weeks.

For what it's worth Andy, I once hacked a similar situation by cutting, drilling and rounding two lengths of nickel plated copper bus bar, supporting them with insulated standoffs, and then bolting distribution lugs and cables off the bottom of a DC Breaker to feed a 600V DC SCR motor control array. The breaker in that case was mounted on a backplane rather then front mounted but it might be applicable in your case as well. Additionally, I personally don't like bottom feeding a breaker as electricians are used to seeing 'Hot on top'. I also seem to recall something about thermal and magnetic trip breakers having to be fed from the top for something to do with the sense and trip mechanisms being tied to the lower load side of the breaker. And, at 5:00, I don't know if it applies to Prismatic LFE Cells, but setting lead acid, and older NI-Cad batteries directly on concrete was a big NO-NO, as it seemed to kill them quickly. I've been told it's due to Ferric minerals in the concrete, and /or thermal differences, but I personally had group of Deep-cycle Lead acid setting on concrete die in a matter of months, twice. The battery MFG said to place the batteries on plywood, and that seemed to resolve the failure issue.

Looks good. First time I have seen a digital torque meter and in use. if I remember 20 ish Nm is starting territory for cylinder head bolts, before final tightening. Its all in the prep will start coming together know.

I like the extra conduit to shield the cable against possible abrasion. I'd do the same thing.

You can make with coper bas bar bended 90 degree or square cut out 90 degree, and holes to take the cables. THe shunt will need a saparater . The torck is difine by the bolt strength ,in is reaten on it. Or the strength of the breaker connection.

If it helps set your mind at ease, we use very similar corrugated tubing for wire that sits on 30kV/ 75mA DC without issue. No problems with it arcing.

Another possible solution might be to have one of the bussbars spaced slightly further out from the supporting wall in comparison to the other bussbar. A staggered type design. I know it means alot more work & modifications but your main cables from the "bussbar to CB" will be further away from crossing the other buss bar. 🤔 Just a thought, but overall I think your design is very good & well thought out. 👍👌😊🍻🍺

put a couple of holes in that shelf .. so cable goes down .. under shelf .. then back up the second hole in front of where you need it. Just a thought.

Have you thought about putting one busbar in the front, that way you could have had the breakers in the middle and cables going either side, not crossing. Still like your thought processes, and really pickup a lot of knowledge, hope to one day build my own off-grid system.

6 NM may feel light but remember that isn't hardened steel your going in to. It's a copper based alloy and copper is kind of soft. So it's tight enough to hold and won't strip the threads.
@jadu79
@jadu79 2 года назад
some thoughts I thought of is turn the cable cover so your cut is away from where it can come in contact and I would probably put the holes at different heights so they do not have to cross the product but also to thread in the copper rod so there is contact there and is not the grooves on the nuts to bite in and give a better contact and you I wonder if they do any good on a washer? Then I wonder why not put a minus on the battery directly to the BMS instead of having another connection and cable on both sides of it? would as it looks in the video that it will be hanging between the switch and minus but if you were to put something under a 120mm fan then you get both circulating air and can use one with light in which lights up a bit on the levels.

@OffGridGarageAustralia
@OffGridGarageAustralia 2 года назад
Happy 2022 to you too. I have some video about solar panels in parallel and series. It often is very individual decision what kind of constellation you should install for your needs and circumstances. Roof orientation, shading, distance, space, controllers, battery. This all plays a role in what and how you should setup your panels.

Be careful: extensions etc all change the actual torque you’re applying. Especially if there is twist. This is how they make specific torque extensions.

Problem with solar and wind too is it takes more energy to produce them, then you will get out of it. If you look at all the rare earth metals needed to be mined (pollution from that) and made in places like china and shipped halfway around the world. dumb
