Lol! It wasn’t my first harvest. I’ve been keeping bees for a good while but it was the first harvest for my students and our first time using the small extractor. I know it’s simple and small and cheap but it worked like a charm and the guys loved it. Thank you for watching and being a part of my journey. You got that right! That was our mistake. Cranking slow and steady gets the honey out just as well as going crazy on it and having it wobble. It’s pretty stable when you go slow. I still like bolting it down to the pallet though. God bless and thank you for watching.
I was on the fence about gloves; sometimes wore them, and sometimes didn't until I got stung on the palm of my hand. Never again! I been stung all over, but that was the worst! It was neat watching your operation because it was pretty much exactly the way I do it, with the serrated knife and scratcher, though I am going to be building the uncapping jig you got that is pretty slick! I also have to have the garage door shut or extract at night otherwise the bees start taking their honey back before we're done! Working my way through your archives, but definitely enjoying your adventure in the Phils

The uncapping jig was made from scrap and works perfectly. Free is way better than an uncapping tank that costs hundreds. Beekeeping doesn’t have to be expensive, but it too often is. I agree that having the garage door closed is a good idea but my friend only had 1 colony so we weren’t getting bothered in his garage. Things here in the Philippines can be frustrating but I’m trying to keep my head and learn as fast as I can to stay ahead of problems. More updates coming soon. God bless you always my friend. I use a real thin bread knife and use a sawing motion from top of the frame to the bottom and the cappings comes off in 1 big sheet of wax and really saves your frames of wax to be filled back up.
That's excellent. That was what we were going for, but my knife wasn't ideal and the frames weren't exactly built out uniformly and very thick. Some were thicker than others and that really speaks to why so many beekeepers prefer to put 9 frames in a 10 frame box. Thank you again for the feedback. My first uncapping tub is similar to your set up only I mounted the cross bar directly to my plastic tub. This year I added the simple harmony farms uncapper to my beekeeping supplies.

@@beekeepinginparadise5935 I've seen a couple other RU-vidrs using the Simple Harmony Farms uncapper and thought I'd give it a try. I'm in my fourth year and selling honey is starting to pay for my upgrades. It's too late in the season for my solar wax melter to clean up my wax. So I won't have a report on wax until next summer. The wax melter was made from scrap that I had laying around. The only cost was a can of black spray paint. The uncapper doesn't produce as much cappings before extracting but I do end up with a lot of dry cappings under the boxes after the bees clean up for me.
That makes sense that the bees would remove the rest of the capping while cleaning the frames up. Good thing you didn’t just set them on the grass. I’m happy you’re able to start paying for your upgrades with honey sales. That’s what it’s all about. Good luck getting all your bees through the winter and I hope you have a bumper crop next year.
I would suggest putting a little food grade super lube in the bottom pivot and the gear case and give it a steady slow run for about 5 minutes before it's first use. I made a drill attachment for mine using a driver to socket adapter and 18mm socket with a clutch bearing inserted in it and secured with a grub screw I drilled and tapped into the socket side, that fits on the crank shaft. Key with using any hand crank extractor is slowly gaining speed as it spins out the honey, if it starts to wobble any bit you are going a bit too fast and need to back off a bit.
That's excellent advice! Thank you for adding that. I agree, that the extractor does not need to be rotating at full speed to extract the honey very well. Slow and steady worked really really well and it kept the wobble to a minimum. Going too fast was our issue more often than anything. I agree that lubing the gears and pivot is a good idea. @@beekeepinginparadise5935 Seems my reply got ate by the system. I was wrong about the socket size ti's a 3/8" drive 11/16" socket that a HF1216 one way roller or clutch bearing fits neatly inside with little to no play. I drilled and tapped a hole in the side to fit a 10-32 grub screw to keep the bering in place and use a drill to socket adapter on the socket. The bearing fits perfectly on the shaft where the crank handle goes and locks up when turned in one direction to spin the shaft and free wheels (much like a bicycle rear hub bearing) allowing the extractor basket to spin when not being powered by the drill.

sense you're just starting out, you should do a beginner's side by comparison of the hive you have and a top bar beehive, along with extraction and wax collecting to see which is best for you.

Actually I've been an active beekeeper for several years and my family has been keeping bees non-stop for over 100 years in Indiana. I just decided to get into it actively later in life and it became a passion for me even though I was very small scale due to community restrictions allowing us only to have 2 colonies in residential areas. I stick with Langstroth equipment because I know it and because I'm also a woodworker and make all my own equipment. Now that I've relocated to the Philippines to turn my passion into a commercial business I'm finally scaling up my operations but starting over from scratch. This channel is going to get really interesting I hope you'll continue to watch. You never know, I may add in a top bar hive one of these days just for fun and to show off the differences to my viewers. It might be a good idea to take the drawn comb back to the hive it came from. Leave it on for 24 hours or so and then store it. Leaving it out might start a robbing situation with bees from other hives. They can be hard on wax because they're in a hurry. I liked your prayer. God bless.
I like your ideas Cathy. That would work fine and it’s a good practice to do it that way. I knew that I wouldn’t have an issue with robbing because there was still a flow on and the bees weren’t desperate for resources. Plus I told them all to behave and play nice together, LOL. Very true. I could chuck it into a drill easily but to be very honest it spins with such little effort I don’t think it’s necessary. I’m home in Indiana now from the Philippines and am getting together with these friends to harvest more honey. I’ll film it again and ask if anyone thinks it’s worth doing. At the time honey is extracted it gets air bubbles in it. That’s why it’s important to let it settle for at least a day or two before bottling. The bubbles in the formation of hydrogen peroxide are a little different and your correct, perfectly normal. I really appreciate you watching. God bless and Bee well my friend.

This is my first year harvesting honey too. This is a great video. I'm borrowing an extractor from my bee group but having my own extractor sounds good. I might buy one of these for next year. Will this extractor handle deep frames? How much honey did you get?

I truly do recommend this extractor if you’re planning to buy one and it will handle deeps. In total Julien harvested about 25 pounds of honey and I got about 29 from my 9 frame medium super after recovering the honey from my cappings (check out the follow up video, Beekeeping in a Recession).

I'm an avid gardener, and will be pursuing my gardening hobby when we settle in Iloilo in my brother's little farm. I'm sure keeping bees would be beneficial for some of his crops as well as my garden of course. Right now we are busy packing our things for our trip to the Philippines. We are flying to the Philippines before the end of the year but will still return to the States to straighten out our residency status from California to Nevada. Then back to Iloilo again. God willing, we may be able to visit your place in the Philippines someday. I got it directly from Vevor.com. I was on Facebook the other day and it looked like they dropped the price down to $113.99. If that's the case then it's an excellent extractor for even less money than I paid for it! I recommend it to anyone starting out or to anyone who needs a relatively small extractor.
