Well, small colony, late split like he said, probably mostly nurse bees and no grouchy old foragers....but anyway, you may find that using gloves increases clumsiness and decreases fine touch, so you are more likely to press a bee and provoke a sting. You may not feel the sting in your glove, but they can all smell what just happened and it raises the alarm. Moving slowly and having better feel, you can cause less panic by not using gloves.........
@romoshka1
@romoshka1 4 года назад
Billy Konstantine like B Calvert said, bare hands create the necessity of going slow which keeps bees calm despite your increased anxiety. Start with nitrile gloves and graduate to bare hands. I dump the charred residual from the smoker and rub it on my hands.

As a new beekeeper there is a tremendous amount of information to learn if you intend to manage your hives for growth. Knowing what a fresh egg looks like or a 1 2 or 3 day old may seem trivial to those who do not know but it is important to determining the progression of your hives. I just on Dec 20th got my second hive. I have learned a mountain of information about many subjects. Queens, workers,nurse bees,guard bees,drones, hive boxes, frames, foundation, wax ,honey, sugar water, SHB/varroa/AFB. I read the bee journal, I watch everyone's videos, I search out every bit of info I can find I read and I read some more. I am not a standing member of any local or state or national bee club or organization. I merely gained an interest into an insect that I had feared for 50 years. Now I am addicted to keeping bees. But I learn something new about bees everyday. I am no where near a master I never will be. But I am addicted to keeping bees. I want more. I have 2 hives I want 50. I can only keep 3hives by law in Florida in my yard. Damn I gotta find a place to keep bees or move. I done told you I wanna order some of your Queens, I am not ready to breed queens. My bees will not take my pollen (imitation) they are still bringing in pollen.

As a newbeek I was wondering what on earth am I getting myself into?! I found out real fast that there's a huge difference between honey bees and wasps (altho there are some strains of bees that tend to be more aggressive). The first time I worked my hive I was almost trembling. A few minutes into it, you realize that they've got other things on their mind, so if you move slowly, calmly, and carefully, they'll more than likely ignore you and go about their buzziness...er, business. By the end of my first year, I reached the point where I wanted to tend the hive everyday, but that's just not a good idea, so I had to content myself with sitting near the hive and just watching them come and go. If you don't act like a threat to the hive, they won't view you as a threat, and if you spot a bee tending a flower or drinking water, you can actually pet them (albeit veeeery gently!)

Hi Dave this is great! I've been at bee keeping for about a year now and you've always provide great information. I've caught 2 swarm here in NorCal (Bay Area) already for the month of April. One of which I caught about 3 weeks ago and have transferred them into in a vertical hive. I immediately put the trap out the next day in a different location and caught another swarm 3 days later. I'll be constructing a vertical hive for this swarm as well and will put the trap out once more for 3rd and work with the 3 for 2020. Thanks once again for the information you provide.

Nice video! One of my four hives decided to requeen themselves in December! Weather was nice on Christmas eve so I did hive inspections and found a virgin queen in there. I have some neighbor beekeepers about a half mile away that keep a lot of russians and they said they probably have a few drones flying around. I'm gonna give it a couple of weeks and check when we get good weather again. If she's still not laying I don't know if they'll make it the rest of the way with no brood. I'll have to think about combining the hive. I'm thinking the virgin queen should at least stop a laying worker situation... I'm in Northeast Georgia.
@geturphil69
@geturphil69 4 года назад
@@davidhaught84 I will definitely consider that if she doesn't start laying! Two of the other three hives could probably have a frame of brood borrowed from them. I wasn't sure if that was an option in winter but if the ones I take brood from can still keep up I will do it!

Winter in Georgia is completely different than winter up North...Bees will not take pollen for 5 months......what they will do is take the sugar out of the patty and discard the pollen to the bottom of the hive where the hive beetle larvae will have a feast. All beekeeping is local.

You really don't have winter down there...you have a short break of summer lol (lived there from December to April once)...and my sister still lives in GA. When I watched this video there were 1.1k views and I was #125 👍, what’s wrong with that approval rate? Really folks is it that hard to tap the 👍 and give David a thumbs up approval???

Honey bees are not in danger. Wild bees are in danger. Thanks for the informative video. Good advice.

I was stung a few times last year when my neighbor removed a very aggressive hive.. so at least I know I'm not allergic. He's an old guy in his 80's.. I better tap him for some knowledge why I still can.

I'm 13 and I wanna be a beekeeper when I grow up. Do you think I can do this along with selling flower arrangements? I feel that they could fit together nicely but I need another persons opinion.

Hi Dave, I've been trying to find a good in Depth video of the complete life of Honey Bees. How they make Comb, breeding, honey making, just everything about their life. Any you know of? I've found very short vids, nothing great.

@@davidhaught84 maybe you should make one? That would be a long long video, and take a long time to make. Probably 6 months to a year.

Oh so it's been a little chilly here in Ohio the past couple days....do you think that could be why my bees are acting a little more aggressive towards me? I know there is at least one frame of honey in their hive as of this past Friday.....I'm wondering when I should get back in my hive to check on them? Internet says at least a week...one video on RU-vid said 4 or 5 days....what do you think David? I have learned so much off of your channel.....I guess I'm just always worried about my bees lol they're like my children now.
