Next time you do a will it run you should just change oil, clean carbs and actually try to run it with new gas as soon as you get it. Makes a good intro to the series. Keep up the good vids tho looking forward to this one

Right on! It's haggered but you can still out the old bulb shake out the stuff and jb weld a new bulb in a pinch... Or rig up a system to pop one in and be able to pop it back out with screws or something

Might want to check for spark before wasting your kicks and fluid. Remove valve covers and squirt some oil up there before starting. Did you check the oil? Thanks for the videos. Nice bike.

congrats on the new bike. haven't even finished watching the first video. but... being in nyc, jealous of your ability to just go snatch up a great deal on a CB 500 and have space to wrench on it. As long as the motor isn't frozen or blown, that honda will start.

That bike has points. If you need help with those, I am happy to help. If you are having ignition troubles, start there. It is extremely important to have the points cam lubricated, or it will wear out the points and possibly the points cam, and the bike will never run correctly. I am excited for this build. You got a killer deal on that bike. You could sell the extra engine for what you paid for the bike.

I had a mid 70's 750. Replaced points and cleaned cylinder parts to keep it going.

Had a 550/4 some years ago that I bought very cheap after it had been laid up for some years. It had been dropped and had some light damage, but it only had about 15,000 mls on it. The carbs were gunged up so I put another bank on it and ran it for a few thousand miles, great bike. Good luck with yours..

Goldguy...I have a 75 cb-550f.While waiting for a battery look at the points (under the chrome cover on the right side)..they are a consistent maintenance job which most people fix with a simple electronic ignition.Its easy to static time if you can get the gaps right and they arent too pitted.my guess is the carbs will leak all over and the petcock will be past its due date. Check the valves before starting...simple screw adjusters and easy.At 30k you need to think cam chain....Its not automatic..do it.Good u-tube vids on this.Mine has 48k on it and can be started by hand with the kickstarter.Sweet bikes...Waiting for more..Good Luck.!

Both bikes I have will not start unless the kick stand is raised-but that might not be a problem with kick start

I was the original owner of a 1975 CB 550 Four. It was a great commuting and touring bike but I upgraded to a Harley. 31K miles is low mileage. Because it sat a long time you likely will need to remove and soak the clutch disks. Alternator stators tend to demagnatize on this era Hondas. I would buy another.

No compression in that. I would pull the head and check the valves and maybe grind them. I had a 78 cb400 twin and you could stand on the kick start and have it not turn over. I weighed about 80kg at the time

Earlier than 1978, Honda released the CB550 around 76-77. Will it run? Its a Honda! The 500 was a great bike and yours looks in pretty good shape....

I'm an Old Fart and I miss having a kick starter on bikes. Electric is great but a kick starter gives you a backup for when your battery goes belly up.

I have one of these bikes and love it. You need battery and low beam on lights switch to on and also kill switch and key switch.

Go with some drag bars! I have some on my 76 CB750 build and I love it. I had issues fitting the stock brake master cylinder so you might have to get a different one.

I know you like your bike with the American flag paint job, but this CB 500 has way better lines for a cafe. Your other bike I really think of more on the scramble side of things. If you build this bike right you are going to be way stoked. I have faith in you youngster. Your Suzuki ts 185 is rad by the way. I own the same bike. After watching you not giving up and actually get your stuff running good, kinda made me proud of you. Stay safe gold guy. You’re doing a great job so far..

Add epsom salt to each cell let it sit for a day then flush out the battery and add new acid. The salt disrupts the sulfate crystals on the lead plates and it becomes a sludge that will short the now clean plates if not drained out. New batteries often come with more acid than required to fill them so always store the extra for when you do this trick.

I think it would be cool painted olive green,with black rims, black handlebars, black out the motor and maybe paint the front forks black. Maybe use military style stencil on the tank that has GG on it.

I'd love to see a nice restoration, keeping the loaf seat at least.

Awesome!! Can’t wait to see what you do with it. I will say that Classic Octane channel is doing a build right now on a similar bike, (cb550) and he’s using a different kind of battery than stock. Might be something to look into. 👍🏻 And hey, the fact that the tank is not rusted through should be a huge relief! 😂

You didnt check the spark plugs for spark before trying to start it?

You might want to check the vin's on the two engines and the frame. The extra engine might be the original engine.

You should of fixed the clutch cable first then put it in neutral and pulled the clutch in when trying to start.

If only we could get bikes for that price in Australia. Add another zero and you have what we would pay here for the same one in the same condition. That's why you don't see these sort of project videos coming out of Aus.

There should be a plate on the triple tree that has all the information you want including the date. If that plate is missing, I would be suspicious of this bike, especially since it has no title either. I would have the police department immediately send out an officer to do a VIN look-up on it for you (this is usually a free service) to make sure the bike is not stolen, or at least not mired in a sketchy past. You don’t want to be sinking money into a bike that winds up not being able to be made legal or resellable...

if you got it to roar (only roar, not idling well) this bike, in this cosmetic state, cost more than 2000€ in France. You could make a lot of money from it ! =O

When trying to start an old kick starter type bike take the plugs out and squirt petrol or any kind of in a flammable liquid in there put plugs back and they will probably cough to life if there is a spark

gosh darn. You should unplug the battery and then test it alone and the bike alone when you have no info about it. There could be a short on the bike itself. Try it with a different battery before you buy a new one. Even a car battery will do it.

When a ramp slips out and you’re wearing a bike as a hat you’ll remember to tie the ramp down. Also, that battery was low on electrolytes.
