NEW Black & White Editing HACK - Has anyone else tried this yet..? 

Mark, you've just changed my entire black/white editing game. Thanks so much!!

I thought this guy must be crazy when I first started watching the video! Nobody creates B&W by turning down saturation... But then I saw the results. Excellent. Now I'm trying to get my head around why it works so well. I'm pretty sure similar results could be obtained with more conventional techniques. But happy to be proved wrong.

One of the few Tubetographers actually coming up with some original edit techniques that I haven't seen six thousand times before. Most of the time it's "drop the highlights, boost the shadows". Nice one.

yes... the name of that preset is 100% accurate. I thought I would never nail the art of black&white editing. But with this... WOW. I guess I won't why away again if someone wants shots in b&w. Thanks so much for this!

Just set up the preset according to your advice expecting a 'So what?' result. It's so much better than any B&W preset I had. Thank you.

I've been doing this a while by just pissing around. Something to add to this, Alt click when saving a preset and save it as a Profile. That way you can adjust the HSL even further, since it's still technically a colour image not BW. also, you would just have to add the clarity after but it's better that way since u can just add it on a mask

Thanks not just for the settings but also to encourage some bravery whilst crushing the blacks! I still use your other technique for desaturating and selectively adding back colour - really works well on some images and has actually rescued a couple that just were not working.

I'll give this a try. I have a similar technique which begins with desaturated each color as you showed, but then I adjust the luminance sliders for each color to achieve the desired look. Your technique which adds changing the color temp and tint looks interesting...I'll work it into my next conversion!

Thank you for your video instruction. Tried it on some of my Raw photos. it works like a charm without any special effort to over editing and or guess editing. Just an advice for photos that are JPEGs or not exposed as they should/over saturation etc, one needs to remove any previous editing and than use this editing method for converting to B&W.

This is so cool! Love B&W Pictures but always struggled to prevent them from looking washed out - not with this method!

Very interesting technique, had to watch twice. I re-edited a recent image and ... I think this is what I've been trying to achieve, but never quite got there. Thanks for posting! I'll have to let it stew for a few days. The only thing that bugs me is, I really don't understand how the settings produce the results, and the subsequent tweaking doesn't do what I expect (although that's just a learning curve). I understand applying, say, a "red filter" because it has a physical analogue, but this feels like uncharted territory. Can't argue with the result though!

This is cool. I really like BNW portraits and I've often been frustrated thinking I was seeing greys instead of blacks in my editing. I only have the free version of Capture One for editing right now. But, I should be able to make a similar edit there. Thanks for the tip!

I did this and incorporated some other settings and made my own b&w preset. Since I have different subjects (flowers), I found using another luminescence color channel that fits for the subject works great.

Excellent video! Thank you for sharing your settings, now saved as a preset, & used on one image so far, and works great, shifting the green balance worked well for me. Just need more time to play properly. Need to try this on my IR images next and see if I can infuse this into some custom profiles I use for IR [for expanding 'temperature' range]!
