I found this very helpful in showing all you need to know when moving up to a big boat. Appreciate the owner sharing his experience, and letting us learn with him. He did a great job being a brand new boat!
Great job Will! Having issues when bringing your boat home after taking delivery has to be a fear for every first time boat owner. This is where having The Captains Coach on board is such an asset.
When I was a little fella about the same age as this kid. My grandfather told me port is left side they both have four letters. That has stuck with me for life. Another cool thing he had was a small stick on the dash he called an idiot stick. half red half green and he would flip it accordingly to the buoys. Great videos man. 👍🏻
Good course , personally I don’t think the man and his family needed to be filmed , could affect the learning process, but I understand it was part of the deal. I think future customers need privacy. Will build a better reputation that way. Good video.
Before I brought my new boat I took a boater's safety course so I was familiar with the starboard and port side, red right return markers I think maybe he should take a course. Nice job teaching.
Appreciate the owner letting you film and not being afraid to ask questions. A guess it’s a good investment for the owner to have you on board in the beginning. However, 26:26 scared me a little as any owner (especially with such a high powered boat) should be familiar with basic COLREGs, and what starboard/port (and colors) mean. This is no longer a question about small damages to the boat when docking, but potentially life and death. The owner should’ve studied this stuff beforehand, it’s not that complicated.
The teacher does not seem to have any organized agenda to instruct this guy. They should have done a complete checkout of all the systems before leaving the dock. Dead batteries should never come as a surprise mid trip. All the safety gear should have been identified and checked. This guy needs proper instruction to safely use this nice boat.
I give this guy credit for hiring you, but you got to be kidding me that he did not know which was port or starboard? You have to do some kind of studying on your own.
Would it have been beneficial to use dockside power for the charging of the house batteries while at lunch? Then, the customer would have had the ability to use and learn more systems on the continuation of the trip.
AGM batteries take a long time to recharge once fully drained and the onboard chargers are more of a trickle charger. Not a fast process. No way they would’ve come up in that amount of time.
I disagree with putting fenders horizontally on most docks. If you put them horizontally, a wave or tide could cause them to get hung up on dock. Yes vertically could also, but less chance. I would still put fenders out if there were pilings because i would rather have the fenders rubbing instead of rub rail wearing against the piling.
Bringing the family (dog included) along is not the greatest idea...but buying and trying to Captain a very expensive boat without knowing literally any boating basics isn't either. I hope he can't afford a plane.
July in west Florida, 130 miles, novice boat owner, entire family, poor dog, used boat. Relying on dumb luck to make it. There ought to be a law against poor judgement.
So what, that’s why he is getting a lesson. At some point in the past the instructor didn’t know anything either. Go back to the basement with your negativity
It just might be me but why film someone who's obviously new to boating while they are trying to learn I really don't understand that. I don't get it why do that to a new captain who's just learning maybe he was fine with it but not needed definitely. Not a good way to learn in my opinion.
Then how else will anyone learn from mistakes being made. I’m sure he was asked if he was good with filming. In my opinion these are some of the best instructional videos out there
So you can learn as well! This is an outstanding video. The owner of the boat was a great sport letting him film while being taught. Not only did I learn so did the owner. He can now go back and watch this video again and reflect and refresh his memory. 😊
That brand new sea deck won't last the 120 miles with that dog in there. That material is extremely fragile and susceptible to cuts by anything even remotely sharp.
How distracting is having the dog, and His family on board....I understand the excitement but this guy is a novice and he looks totally lost. He really needed to be one on one with the teacher.....not good...
Yeah, I agree man great video. I learned a lot. I know nothing about boating and very interested in purchasing a boat. This was very helpful. Great content keep up the great work captain.
@jp-st2sl @michelli01 You two have probably never run a business or taught another human being another skill set, hence why you can’t comprehend why a video like this is not only helpful to the client, but a free resource for other new boaters to access. So yes, it’s just you…
