The arm pockets are needed because on operations the guys in the field are often wearing body armour in a plate carrier so you can't get to your chest pockets.
I love all the zips and deep pockets and agree with you about the arm pockets. I love all military surplus (I always buy the surplus for cost). I like the new one as well but if I had the choice of both and had to pick one for myself, I would still go with the old one, cheers Alan
I quite agree with your deliberations on this jacket Jim Bob….I am ex 95 pattern military and have a new pattern jacket both the same as yours and a waterproof longer version. The w/ p one I have been out in storms and it is brilliant!
I love the way civvies clamber to buy these smocks whilst the military clamber to buy civvy made versions from Keela, Solo, Carinthia, Arktis and so on.
Just bought one of these today, cheapest one I saw was from an out of town Army surplus dealer on ebay, they were selling Grade 1's, for £28, with free delivery and free returns if needed, (nice touch that) but I wasn't quite sure what size to order, as I know military gear can be quite a generous fit, so I was thinking I'd need the 180/140, as I'm 6ft tall and measure about 40-41 inches around the chest, then I found an Army surplus dealer near to where I live, (NE UK) so I had a short drive over there and tried on the 180/140, and sure enough I found it to be quite roomy, even though I was wearing a thermal T-shirt and a thick fleece jacket underneath, so I ended buying a 180/96, (NATO Size 7080/9095) and it feels just fine while wearing the same gear underneath it, although it does restrict arm movement, but only very slightly. The only problem I might have is that I want to use this as a three season jacket, and when the weather gets really cold, I'll probably want to add more layers which is going to restrict arm movement even more, but it'll be perfect to wear in the Spring and Autumn months, and I like how it goes to half way (ish) past my thighs covering my backside But I did pay more for this one, it was £45, but it is a Grade 1, and the Smock 2 version and in great condition, but I suppose it's always best to support a local trader where you can. But overall I'm really pleased with this jacket, I'll be wearing it next time I go up into my local hills and moors along with my Army surplus Grade 1 Alberg Defender boots lol
Sounds like we are about the same size. Mine is a 180/104. In the winter I use one of those light down jackets the walkers use under mine. Makes a great liner and not too bulky. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
These smocks come with a DWR finish to them. They need reproofing regularly if you want to keep it water resistant. The Mesh version you have has had two upgrades with the mesh now gone.
I bought one today, from our local army surplus place.Strikeforce UK,here in Somerset. Brand new, still in the packet.I got it for a touch under £40.00. Bought the new pcs jacket for wearing underneath too. Great combination for the north winds we’re getting at the moment down here.It still dosnt beat my 1977 German Parka though. It’s falling to pieces, but like your old DPM smock,I won’t get rid of it. I’ve had it since 1985! All the best.
I love my 90s smock. The cotton is so comfortable, the pockets are roomy and useful. I have the new smock too. The sizing is more generous, almost to baggy. I think the new camo pattern is extremely effective across a broader range of environments and works really well down under where the greens are far more muted than northern European woodland. It definitely needs breaking in. May try water proofing it. The German flecktarn raincoat has not stood up to heavy rain. Seams are stuffed.
@@jim-bob-outdoors Me too, it may not be as water resistant but it's just so comfortable to wear. That said I have been wearing the new MTP smock and it handles heavy rain amazingly well. Its been treated with some kind of water repellent because the rain beeds up and mostly just drops off. That was its first real test and I have to say it stood up bloody well. The baggy fit tends to stop rain wetting your legs as much too.
well done sir, i just got an old one but unissued, new in bag in desert DPM from Varusteleka to augment my old classic one from a surplus store outside DC. ive been debating the new one so your video is well recieved. i agree, velcro is very noisy, and catches on things, and is bad in snow. i like the concept of ventilation but loathe mesh pockets, as they catch everything, and then rip. the pit zips are a big plus though, and the nyco 50/50 is used as i understand it because its good in fire, at least as a economy solution, with IED;s and VBIED's making burns a greater threat over in the desert unpleasantness. Apparently the combustion of the cotton stops the nylon drip and the drip extingueshes the cotton, an anti-symbiosis balance of sorts according to what ive read. Well done review, cheers from the States!
Thanks for the info John. Now I have had it a few months, I like it apart from the velcro. It works ok but often when I am putting it on the velcro sticks to the mesh inner. Its only a small niggle but I can live with it. Regards JB (UK south coast) 👍
You all probably dont care but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the login password. I would love any help you can offer me
@Thomas Nixon I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. Seems to take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Good video. I've got one of these now - found it a few months ago on dartmoor. Near new condition/genuine issue (in my size), along with a few items in the pockets! Mine differs - the zipped chest pockets are not mesh lined. The arm pockets have velcro along the edge. ATB
JB, I have the old windproof smock from the 80's made of garbardine. I don't wear mine in the rain if I can help it. Maybe a little drizzle but from time to time I soak it in NikWax to help with the water resistance. I'm quite happy with the old DPM style, I even had military woollen socks stitched onto the cuffs. Enjoy your new smock👍 atb Taff 🤠
Nice honest review, got to admit though I prefer my DPM jackets, the mtp camo looks like a painter and decorator's overalls. I have an mtp shirt & the amount of velcro does me in, I even unstitched the whole velcro/blanking patches on the sleeves, leaving just the little pockets on, as they caught on everything. All the best & thanks 👍
I prefer the older dpm ones tbh they seem better made🤷♂️ like you say they are definitely not waterproof I've also had the trousers they just don't make em like they used to they look good though 😂
i laughed at the 4:15 mark, "i dont see why this is necessary when ive already have 6 pockets" a seperate note, treat it with nikwax to make it fully waterproof, nikwax is a uk company which maintains that its products have no harsh chemicals that harm the environment as well.
Not too sure as to whether or not I like the new one mate if im honest...the arm pockets ?? Not needed ...some other good new features ...but I guess time will tell if its as good as the previous model
Thanks for watching Justin. I was the same as you when I first saw it. Now I have used it a couple of times, its growing on me. I like most of the new things apart from the sleeve pockets. Pointless when you already have 6 big ones. Regards JB.
@@jim-bob-outdoors exactly my friend..guess its wearing it frequently and finding out all its pros and cons that determine how good its going to be...6 pockets is more than enough
arm pockets are for smart cards, kill cards, also can hold TQs and combat gauze. very useful if doing military things as it was designed for, as you would be wearing body armor over this garment and wouldnt have access to the pockets on the torso.
Have DPM,& Desert, 2each, so far like the MTP, but hear 2 versions available, waiting for size and features out there...... somewhere. Good shillouet breakup w/ brush & season... enjoy.
@@jim-bob-outdoors snagging is ok, but everybody complains about the mesh. I have also an mk2. I dont know which is better. !!!in sunny greece also in winter is good to have a bit extra of an airflow

They are good mate. Now I have had mine a few months it has softened up a bit. The pockets are massive and I love how the rolled up hood keeps the wind of your neck like a scarf.
