I used to work for a firm that did the "hand over cleans" I.E. the final clean/inspection before the new owners move in, our job was to hide things, camouflage faults, and disguise defects, the faults you can see are bad but the ones you cant see are far worse, roofs not tied to walls, missing wall and ceiling cavity insulation, fire breaks not intact, extractor fans not extracting to the outside was very common, no wonder they are cold and expensive to run, they are open to the elements. by the time we got on site all the trades had moved on to new sites so it was down to us labourers to make things look OK, basically hide all the faults,

Live, or should I say not live in an 80s Barratt flat.. Really good if you like listening to other neighbours at all hours using the toilet, footsteps, stomping around, slamming doors, sudden loud thuds etc etc... Also perfect for the winter. The cheap timber frame walls really do let the heat escape which ensures you pay WAY more for the heating bills. You'd probably get a much better quality of life living in a prison. Whoever is responsible for building these needs to hope that hell doesn't exist when their time comes... Still cannot believe they and other companies get away with this ..

I work for a company that paints and cleans the outside of houses, everything from the render to the uPVC windows and gutters. We do a lot of work on the new builds here in North Manchester, the ones that have literally been thrown up in the last two years. The majority of these homeowners complain about draughts throughout the house, and its not uncommon to find no seals around the uPVC window frames or missing mastic seal on brickwork. We find a lot of false airbricks, smoke extractors with no outside cover. And the worst, render that does not extend from the wall to the roof facia, gaps of between MM's or even inches, enough to let in draughts, water and insects.

Another classic example of why you should never buy a new build house. People say they want cheap affordable housing. Well I can tell you no developer is ever going to sacrifice their own profits. They will cut corners wherever they can and use the cheapest of materials they can get their hands on. It used to be that newbuilds had a 100 year guarantee. Newbuild no only come with a 25 year guarantee. If you want cheap trust me they are going to give you cheap. I would never ever buy a new build house these days they are riddled with problems and it will cost a lot of money each year to put right. When buying your house I wouldn’t bother looking at any house that has been built from the 1990s onwards. I would look at buying an older property. Yes they may need some work but it will save you so much money in the long run as these houses are built to last. My house was built in 1880.

Ontop of the fact they a lot of the time will sell leasehold these days, which they brand,disguise and manipulate inw ords and display as a purchase of property, when it's literally just a rent on paper for a set period.

As the video mentions, Dot and dab boards should be fixed with a continuous run of adhesive at the top and bottom of the board, then usual dabs at regular intervals. This prevents draughts, but it also served to slow or stop the spread of smoke and fire.

What is it with British people and their penchant for dull, stuffy, uninspiring house designs? Why just a square box divided into smaller square boxes? Yuck. And this guy probably spent some unimaginable amount of money for that place. Add some angles, some curves, don't be so uptight. :)
@liiisajarviiis
@liiisajarviiis 4 года назад
Because you can fit more square houses together on a plot of land than you can with houses that have angles and curves. Houses in the UK cost a lot and there's not enough for how many people there are. So obviously that means rows of boring square houses, efficiently plotted onto the given land to maximise the space whilst not becoming overly expensive for the average buyer.
@kgbeezr75
@kgbeezr75 4 года назад
@@liiisajarviiis I hear you, but I live in Florida where they manage to squeeze thousands of houses into subdivisions that really don't occupy that much raw land. In most cases your neighbors are close enough that they can tell what you had for lunch, and they still manage to add some visual interest to them. Even what we call "townhouses" (I guess the equivalent of council flats in the UK, but not related in any way to government subsidies) can be long rows, essentially a giant rectangle, but each individual unit might still have vaulted ceilings, lofts, skylights, some angles to the kitchen, a nice curved staircase...they come up with ingenious ways to make them nice to look at. Even the new places in the UK (I don't live there, I only see what I see through media) are just squares divided into smaller squares. Maybe it's some attempt to maintain the absolute maximum square footage numbers? I'd give up some space for character.

@Jack Jones You're right about that, we love our cheap shit. That's really the issue, as i'm sure you know, everyone here wants grandiose curb appeal instead of small and modest quality. But even a 200 sq ft tiny home can be interesting. I was more giving you guys a hard time. We do have good quality homes here too though, it's just that no one can afford them. Haha :) We have a lot of mobile homes here too, and those really are chewing gum and toothpicks.
