The best thing I did with United miles was getting my significant other a business class award ticket to a land far far away from me for a week, which I spent alone with my dog and went fishing everyday all day and ate steaks and lobster every day

Not sure if this has been addressed yet, but as far as the “upgrade benefit” goes, the terms say that “the primary cardmember who *has MileagePlus Premier status* and is traveling on an award ticket is eligible”. So unfortunately, no upgrades if you don’t already have status. It’s actually a benefit only for status holders. Basically, if you have status, you’re not eligible for complimentary premiere upgrades on award tickets unless you also have this or one of the other MileagePlus cards that offer the benefit

I would agree that jumping through hoops to break even may not be for everyone. The two 5K rebates are also not automatic. A casual United flyer may be better off getting United Business + downgrading an Explorer to a Gateway.

Great video! 2 things to worth mentioned: 125$ credit applied on the first year in addition to the first year intro bonus. We also have the option to pay 16k united miles for the 250 $ yearly fee.

Yes. I just opened the card and see there is $125 credit to use until the first anniversary date. It's $125 annual credit not anniversary credit.

For hardcore United flyers the ability to level up with the PQD. Granted one has to spend 12K for 500 but leveling up at United is harder....not like AA or Delta where you buy a biscotti and your now a gold level flyer :-\.....so anything that helps is great. They had cards with better terms in the past and closed those cards so anything new is welcomed and a keeper.

Yes! Few times is prefered to get more options with purple cards (as enjoy the AirPort itself) rather than the luxury selection. Big challenge for lounges to beat the outside

Ive got the United Mileage Plus and just got approved for my United Quest card. The MP card gives two day passes a year to Uniteds Lounge and free checked bags. Well worth the 95 bucks a year AF. The Quest card doesnt have any passes, but its value is fantastic overall. I got both! Id say do it.

I have had the explorer for 5 plus years becuase of the lounge and i am waiting on the Quest to arrive next week, but plan on downgrading my Exlorer to no annual fee, but see you have both and was curious why. The lounge access pays for itself but it seems you would get the same benefits as the Quest. :)

I fly with united usually for work on economy only. I dunno if I still wanna fly them when I redeem for personal travels. I would probably rather use ultimate rewards or Amex points and transfer to partners to save points while not using united miles to book for, say, ANA.

9:13 huh that's an interesting point. I guess the biggest downside of not sticking with the airline that has a local hub is you get way fewer direct flights, but the upside is you're not competing with business travelers for upgrades.

Not a bad card, but you have to fly United!!! Also I like the board early perk, I like getting onboard as early as possible and getting settled. In addition, the free checked baggage(s) really cuts into the AMEX Platinum (or Hilton Aspire) Airline Fee credit perk!!

Chase United Explorer Card gets you one checked bag free and onboard early too and only costs $95. No $125 credit or 5000 mile flight credit though....

It also appears to me that the 5,000 mile credit can not be gain by flying Swiss Air... Also from the T&C -> "An award flight credit (one per reservation) will be automatically applied, and 5,000 miles will be added to the primary Cardmember's MileagePlus account, within 2 weeks after fully completing an eligible award flight. Award tickets booked that include at least one (1) United- or United Express-operated flight fully flown and completed and include the primary Cardmember on the reservation, qualify as an eligible award flight. "

FYI: The $125 credit is active during the first year. I opened my card in early May 2021, just booked and flight around Christmas and received the full $125 credit.

I have a question about Chase's 5/24 rule. I currently have 4 total primary revolving credit cards on my report, but I also have 1 authorized user account on there as well. By having 5 total accounts reporting, would that make me ineligible to get another Chase card? Or will they automatically know that 1 of those accounts is an authorized user & not my actual primary account.

It looks like to me the $125 annual credit is available in the first year. From the T&C -> "$125 Annual United Credit: A statement credit will automatically be applied to your account when your card is used for United purchases, up to an annual maximum accumulation of $125. Annual means the year beginning with your account open date through the first statement date after your account open date anniversary, and the 12 monthly billing cycles after that each year."

It does. I received the card a little over a week ago and bought a couple of United tickets and the credit posted after about a day. I wish the 5,000 mile rebate was allowed for the first year.

I think it is only good for the primary cardholder and I usually use miles for companions and pay cash for myself for status qualifying purposes. Also it is also only good for United & United Express operated flights not partner flights. If the rebate applied to partner flights it would definitely be a keeper card.

I have a question about the award ticket upgrade. Last year I booked a MCO->HNL one way economy award ticket, and right after booking, their website popped up a message that if I pay an extra 398, I can upgrade the second leg to first class. I wonder if there is a way that I can know this ahead of time before I spend miles to book the award economy ticket? This will be really interesting.

The 5k anniversary points is confusing to me. I think you have to fly twice a year using miles and each time you'll get 5k points back? That plus the $125 credit might make this a good card for me in the DC area by Dulles 🤔 even if I only use it with United...and I guess could just downgrade if I'm wrong

The one important thing to weigh with this card is are you likely to fly United at least two times in a year, and do you have other loyalty programs you're working on. Seems like a good keeper if you fly United but might be a skip if you don't prefer United.

If you already have United status (i.e., Silver) than maybe not. Worst case, this is a good intro bonus + option to downgrade to no-AF card in Year 2.

That's an interesting thought that airline credit cards that give you "status-adjacent" benefits like premier upgrades are harder to get value from at the hub airport. I'm sure it's not the only factor to consider, but since I live near the ATL airport, this United card might make sense over a similar Delta one? Since Delta has an almost 70% market share of flights here. Or would Southwest or American make more sense?

A lot of these so-called credit card "reviews" merely read to you what's on the issuer's website. Meaningful analysis is often missing. I have two question for the community: 1. When using the Quest card, do I get PQPs when buying United flights for someone other than myself. For example, if I buy a United flight for my wife, who's flying alone, without me. Do I still get PQPs for that purchase? I believe so, but would like to make sure. 2. The 5,000 Mileage Award Savers. Similarly to question 1, do I get them if I book a flight with miles for someone other than myself?

I received this card in early March and I was confused about this $125 credit. I asked chase customer service, and it took them escalations and 4 weeks to get back to me. They told me this credit is usable even in the first year. I am not sure if that is correct. Have you confirmed with any sources that the 125 credit is only applicable starting year 2?

The free bags seems to he the best option for me, but you have to pay for the whole flight on the card to get it. So it seems like no free bags for your award flights, which kind of makes them not awards. It also means no reason to transfer points to fly.

I am stuck between this and the Chase Marriott Boundless. I am at 4/24 and am trying to determine what will take my last Chase slot. I have no Marriott cards and just got the explorer 6 months ago. Given that both have good sign up bonuses, what's the community thoughts? I am looking to go to Japan soon (tTokyo Disneyland to be specific). I have 70,000 united miles, so another 100,000 would be a nice touch. That said, I have not come up with a plan for hotel stays, but have both the hyatt and IHG card. Any input is appreciated!

Why do people looks at the anual fee to see if they “keep” the card. Some people spend more on beer in a weekend than a 95 dollar anual fee. These cards if approved (which I was literally instantly) gave me 5k credit off the rip lol my other cards like the capital one quicksilver did not give me anything near that lol

Problem is that the 10,000 of miles you only get if you use United miles to make the purchase, right? What happens when I run out of miles? Then I can’t earn those 10,000 points from keeping it in my sick drawer. Delta Platinum is same annual fee but offers a free round trip domestic flight each year for a companion. A no brainer.

You can transfer UR to UA. Delta one might be better if you fly long-haul (coast to coast). Huge YMMV here obviously :)

No, I would apply for the card. You don't get a bonus when you upgrade. That's setting 100k miles on fire.

If you product change, do you still get the 100k miles sign up bonus? If not, then no. Downgrade the Explorer to the United Gateway $0 annual fee card and then (if not over 5/24) apply for the Quest to get the points.

Are you sure $125 credit doesn't come in first year? I just opened the card. It shows I have $125 United purchase credit through July 2025.

Oh cool, didn't now Chase was coming out with this. Maybe I missed it, but surprised the Chase United Explorer Card wasn't brought up as a comparison since this seems like the one tier up from that card. Will probably be sticking to the explorer for now on my end. Only first checked bag free is good enough, same priority boarding benefit (?). It doesn't seem like the quest has lounge passes which the Explorer did (in a pre-pandemic world). Not sure if the explorer still actually has the lounge passes truthfully, but that might be a game changer once flying becomes even more normal

@sebby You DO get the 125 dollar credit in the first year. You don't get the 2 5k rebates on ual metal unitl your second year, but those are worthless anyway. Read the terms for those two benefits, they define "anniversary" differently.
