Hello everyone! In case you haven't watched my review of the Return of Rome DLC, you can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BcMOfyJQ5gA.html I will wrap up my coverage of RoR with the next video, which will be a guide of this new game mode for those who are unfamiliar with AoE1. Cheers!
The A.I. priests always terrified me in AoE1. On my first approach of an enemy city, the enemy priests popped out of the fog of war and started chanting while the tower started firing balista bolts at me. Back then I was ignorant enough to have set my enemies as allies so I could not attack them outside of ground attacks. So I used to think that I need to make my priest sing for the towers to work
I had similar occur when the AI converted a Hoyohoyo buffed priest as a kid. And fun fact, if you use the cheat, then research the HP upgrade, it just DOUBLES their HP in the original game. The next 2 hours of madness were hilarious after the fact. 😂
Great video! A side effect of dark rain was that those archers could walk over water and JACK BE NIMBLE was one of my favourites as well. The flying cows and vills spinning or flying like superman from a catapult were really fun to shoot at your opponents.
Ah, I forgot to talk about JACK BE NIMBLE! I know that it currently doesn't work in ROR, because I tried it, it didn't work, then I forgot to talk about it in the script. If they introduce it sometime later, I'll make a quick unlisted video and link it here. :)
Ironically running into eachother was a corner stone in classical antiquity battles, then the Romans discovered that they can just let the enemy run towards them, get tired and offer less resistance while being sworded.
@@МартинКичуков I think that's just a common myth, we know celts sometimes fought in tight phalanx-like formations (as Caesar explained in Commentarii de Bello Gallico) and the Greeks literally invented and used (along with all other hellenized peoples) the phalanx and popularized the pike/sarissa formations. Running into each other was dumb even by "barbarian" standards, nobody clever enough would charge against a shield wall or a testudo unless you have some kind of heavy cavalry or elephants (and even then, it's more clever to just attack the rear of the formation, never the front). Romans actually surpassed those slow-moving formations by being much more mobile and agile, a lesson they themselves learned after fighting other Italic cultures, specially the Samnites.
Man, those cheats takes me back. I didn't really mess around with them much in the later games, but loved doing tactical strikes on ancient civs with a team of robots and laser troopers supported by nuke troopers and ICBMs 🤣
Cheat units always make me think that these were assets that got made during the very early design process before there was clear decision about what kind of theme the game was meant to have.
@@GepardenK Could have been something that was rigged up to be a motorcycle unit with a gun. If I remember correctly the original Age of Empires team were considering a scifi/fantasy game theme before deciding on making it historical. A very early program of the very earliest seed of Age of Empires was a tank game.
@@DCdabest lucky us that at the end they didn't get inspired by ea abandoning command and conquer completely. (c&c 3 still has active players and tournament despite this)
Also, back when Age I came out, the stress and time constraints on dev teams were *a lot* more lax than they are today. A lot of cheats, easter eggs, etc came from simple jokes between guys in the office. Every office finds time for a bit of banter, but few offices have the skillsets to really develop it beyond just a funny idea. But you put a bunch of game devs in a room and give them reasonable goals and deadlines, you can be damn sure they'll use the excess time to make all manner of wonderful things - this then combines with the relatively easy-going approach towards games back then such that these stupid little projects would often get approved by the bossman because hey why not, it's a laugh! These days devs are under a lot more pressure and rarely have the time to muck around like this. That also means when they finally get home they're also far less inclined to work on little pet projects - as opposed to just putting their feet up and monging-out in-front of the TV
Great compilation! It's great to see also this element being upgraded and included in RoR expansion. In 1DE I didn't use them that much, but in 1997 I certainly used them a lot for... hmm, research. 4:43 It's kinda, partially, present in AoE III:DE too, but only as a skin for the US hero explorer unit.
I almost forgot how bonkers AOE1 cheats were! I would have loved to see "King Arthur" available in AOE2... It would make much more sense! Anyway, thanks for the vid, as always :)
Since the assets were built by the devs, I'm pretty sure someone can make an AoE2 mod that we can install tbh, just like other cosmetic mods in the workshop. Cheers. :)
Dark rain archers can walk on water Use hoyo hoyo before upgrading treble techs for 1200 HP and even more speed Also, Jack be nimble (cows and Superman villagers for catapult projectiles) Upsideflintmobile (speedy chariots) I hope they add those One thing about Medusa is that at one stage I think villagers needed to be tasked to attack something so that they are villagers when they die. Farmers, miners, fishermen, lumberjacks, foragers just died , unless they changed things
Thought so to, but like many old RTS it did not really age that well. But yeah for the time it was among the better titles. The game that was hit the worst by unfortunate timing was Battle Realms in my opinion. It was released when Microsoft flooded everything with free Aoe2 copies with everything remotely connected to stuff they sold.
I remember when I was a kid, playing with photon mans (after I was definitely going to lose a game), and suddenly one of my photon mans was converted by the enemy. It was hell, it would constantly kill someone and disappear again.
pow was without exclamation mark, at least in the original. Also a difference between bigdaddy and big momma, at least back in the day, was that bigdaddy has more damage that also deals splash damages to friendly units. Whereas big momma has no friendly fire. For this reason, I always preferred big momma as large groups of bigdaddy's would end up destroying eachother.
i sometimes did that, spawn 2 squads of 12 photons with 4 emc guys and 1 mech. and thats all you had. basicly you were stranded troopers trying to proctect their camp, you cant advance age and have to survive on a 1v7 and cant rush them, with only your main building and some huts.
From what i saw in the video, bigdaddy and photon man isnt even remotely as OP as they were in the original game Photon man fired like 20 shots in a single second and bigdaddy had a huge area of effect
Iirc, og aoe dragons fly towards gold. Nuke trooper with icbm can fire across the map (with attack ground command) For baby prez, maybe try 'pow big mama'' Does 'grantlinkspence' cheat code is here as well? It turns aninal into king variants Also does cheats : 'Jack be nimble', 'upsidflintmobil', 'steroids'
• No variation of BabyPrez works unfortunately. • Jack be nimble doesn't work either unfortunately, as I mentioned in another comment. • I already talked about Steroids in the video, it works just fine. • Grantlinkspence works, I forgot to talk about it. :( • Upsidflintmobile works as well. I originally misspelt it as "Upsideflintmobile", so I thought it didn't work. My bad on this!
The version of Age of Empires (the "Gold" version that included both the original AOE and its expansion) I had at the turn of the millennium used the code "Pow Big Mama" to summon the "Babyprez" unit. I don't know if it was a quirky one-off that was unique to the CD I had, a version-wide variant, or if the game just recognized it as an alternative version of "Pow".
I never knew about the King Arthur cheat as a kid. All those missed opportunities! I expect the Dark Rain cheat is more based on the game Dark Reign, released a month before AoE, where the sniper unit could turn into trees (hence it affects archers here).
I just wonder if the only hero that in the original game had his own skin, the hero Jason, will also be updated, I'm nostalgic for him because it's the one I used to create missions when I made maps as a child
@@AgeofNoob it's a RTS... Like Red Alert, yes... Dark Reign sits alongside C&C, Warcraft Orcs & Humans and Starcraft. If you're under 40, you're probably only familiar with remakes - which Dark Reign never received.
Zug-209 was my favorite cheat growing up, though this one looks a lot wider than the previous. Zug-209 was a parody of ED-209 from Robocop. Also the new dragon visual is kinda ok, I thought the original one was better.
I only knew a few of these as a kid because my mom was the one who told me the cheats, and she apparently only knew about half of them according to this list!
Layer bug on the southmost villager (he seems to walk behind the blue veggie thing as he walks south). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jcdF_Z5T78M.html
I am quite sure the expansion was called "rise of Rome" not "return". I also seem to remember that the tricycle cheat was powpowpow, but the last time I played was when the game came out, so I may be wrong...
Rise of Rome is the expansion from 1998. Return of Rome is the DLC from today. :) I've tried all variations of pow, including yours. It doesn't work I'm afraid.
1:00 I wonder if they are not "disabled" but require a AOE 2 town center to spawn. And technically the AOE 1 and AOE 2 town centers are considered different buildings. 🤷♂
If they had not sold 20 billion versions of AoE2 as different games I would praise them for this. But with the situation as is I woudln't even know which of said 20 billion versions this affects since they are named in a very samey way.
DOES NO ONE KNOW ABOUT THE NINJACONNOR CHEAT??? Why haven't i never heard or seen anyone else use it? It gives you 10000 for each of the four resources lol.
Really wish we get some of those cheat codes in the actual aoe2: -ICBM now gives +100 range to scorpion or heavy scorpion -You forgot upsideflintmobile will this move to the second game? Wish it does in the second game, cavalry archer or heavy cavalry archer move as fast as cobra car. -bigdaddy is a great cobra car alternative that is best vs castles. -yes we want stormbilly and the pow to make it into both modes -hoyohoyo should come to second game, all monks owned by the player get +600 hitpoints and can apply to any monk you convert or changes ownership to you. -convert this! is another one we want -the medusa and black rider. the medusa cheat code should not change the villager into this "medusa" unit also the cheat code can be renamed and a new medusa cheat code can be made to spawn an actual greek mythology medusa that functions like the age of mythology medusa. Then this cheat code called "villager revenge" (if the ai raids your town they will get punished). Once used, any villager including fake ones like i love the monkey head will spawn the black rider on death. The black rider is to become the strongest cavalry unit in the game and has more stats than any other mounted and archer unit in the game. Hp stronger than gidajan meaning it is at least 999. Attack is stronger than Ghenghis Khan at 30 (also gets 30 bonus vs rams (trebuchets count in this) to make sure they don't resist him). Armor 5/3 + elite cataphract level of anti cavalry bonus damage becomes 5+4/3+6 when fully upgraded (enables all cav archer techs to civs that miss them). Last, the movement speed is as fast as cobra car. If killed will spawn a siege onager or heavy catapult. -big bertha. In aoe2 changes the mangonel line into big bertha which has the following stats: 250 hp, does physical siege damage at 200 attack with the same bonuses as the trebuchet while still keeping the large 5 tile blast radius. Minimum range to be reduced all the way down to zero. "Thought you could sneak under the minimum range and take me out paladin?" -jack be nimble in both games, why not in 2 and bring it to return of rome since aoe3 got it on the ya gotta make do with what a got cheat code...
@@multitalentedman1284 I am an insider. Certain content creators are given early access to review and showcase the game. What I meant about is that the DLC will be available to *play* on the 16th.
@@RennieAsh Some clips are sped up yes, like the Big Bertha one, but he was referring to the whole video I presume. Only a handful of clips have altered speeds to match the narration.
they should fix it then, bigdaddy, big_daddy, bigdada, big_dada and then also for bigmomma + big_momma + bigmommy + big_mommy. lol or not, but I think it would be logical if they did.
@@AgeofNoob The low/mid end of your audio is just too loud. Like you have your EQ for the lows too high or your mids too high. At or around 2500hz Throw it up on a waterfall graph and you should be able to see it. It's peaking really hard at 0:00 and 0:21 when you say "address" for example. Not trying to be a jerk but poor audio just makes it so I can't even tolerate listening to something on a 2nd screen.
@@AgentLokVokun That's correct - I'm well aware that peaking is not a good thing (and admittedly, I should tone it down a touch), but I made the decision a while ago to edit on my Airpods instead of my high quality headphones for the very reason of making it sound good on the average output device. It also sounds clear when on phone/laptop speakers on medium volume as well, so this basically covers the majority of average RU-vid viewer. I guarantee you that 99% of the viewers not only not realize the peaking at all, but won't even know what we're talking about. There're definitely things I can do to improve my voiceover quality, but there are diminishing returns in the time investment I'm already putting into making these videos.
@@AgeofNoob Sounds good to me. Do what you can. However, I will no longer be viewing your content if it's not enjoyable on any of my devices or systems that I use - because it's currently not. I'm not trying to be unreasonable either. The audio is peaking hard and completely blown out from 80hz-ish to 4000hz or so. Trying to give constructive feedback so you may grow your channel. In 2, 4, or even 12 months from now the content can still exist. It will still sound bad and if that's what your standard for evergreen content is, that's fine. But a simple flat EQ or audio leveling filter on your DAW or Video Editor can go a long way with very minimal effort before export.
