the DMG also has an alternate mechanic for handling big armies of enemies. Page 250, mob combat. Basically it eliminates rolling for the enemies. The players can hit any monster individually, but a group essentially is assumed that a certain number of attacks will be guaranteed to hit. You can use average damage to speed things up too. Their to-hit is based on their attack bonus and your players' AC, basically what they need to roll on a d20. For instance, if they need to roll at least a 13, a mob of 3 units is guaranteed to get one hit off on the player. So if you have a mob of 6 units, they successfully and automatically hit with 2 attacks. It makes it so you don't have to actually roll for your mobs, and they can break off into individuals on the fly. This also means they don't ever crit since you don't roll damage. Zee Bashew did a video talking about it and it's hard to explain, but having run it, it handles big groups of enemies SUPER well. Numerically it's about equivalent to averages when rolling individually. If you think about it, it's kinda like how swarms in previous editions had automatic damage as well.
@TheDungeonCoach
@TheDungeonCoach 3 года назад
That really helps and is great advice! I’ll go checkout Zee now!!
@baddiemcbadbad9231
@baddiemcbadbad9231 3 года назад
I don't like the book rules for one reason: it's assuming that the entire mob is hitting one character
@Zedrinbot
@Zedrinbot 3 года назад
@@baddiemcbadbad9231 That won't be too much an issue if there's enough mobs. If it IS though you can break it apart and have a number of volleys made against each player, by RNG. Then back calculate how many of those volleys hit. It'll lead to a bit more wasted attacks from the mobs, but considering it's mass combat, that's not something you're hurting for as a DM.

In your orc scenario you could have one of the orcs from the other group run away in fear or charge the barbarian ending in its death. This could lead to players wasting their reaction to attack it or chase down what is already to the DM as a dead orc, but that is the choice of the player and just adds to combat.
@TheDungeonCoach

Oooooo I see that!! Love it!

Going to try and implementation this swarm mechanic in my next one-shot. Going to have a rat summoner who can summon rats as a bonus action. Mechanically it will heal the swarm by adding to its masses. The players will have to choose to attack the rat summoner or deal with the swarm itself.
@TheDungeonCoach
@TheDungeonCoach 3 года назад
ooooooo yes yes that’s perfect! Basically adding to the pool! 👍🏼
@IsaacBenevides

About the explanation of how the damage "carried over" to the orcs on the other side: maybe one of the orcs was so terrified of the barbarian killing two of his allies in a single hit that he just... ran way. That way, for mechanical purposes the player "dealt" with 3 enemies with his powerful blow, but it still makes sense in-game. And if someone else really wants to spend time killing the fleeing orc, just treat him as a minion.

I love the idea of combining minions and swarms! I feel like it could even be one step easier to just have them be minions that die in 1hp, but have an overkill mechanic where every X damage kills an additional minion, so any damage always kills 1 and that cuts down on the math and hp tracking.

My favorite video has to be the Not Just Loot segment where you talk about rewarding players with bonus, customized perks at level up. This has really inspired me and when I sat down to draw some perks up for my party the ideas came to me like a flood. There's just SO MUCH potential for fun there. Thanks for everything and congrats on your 100th video.

Your "Swarm of Orcs" is nearly the same as I run my campaign. I've done several "Swarms of Goblins", with one pool, etc. "How many are left?" "Lots". The barbarian was one to cut swaths through them, have multiple clinging/climbing on him. Multiple kills in one attack. Keeps things moving well. Split the swarm? No sweat. The barbarian one time grabbed a head of a dead one and chucked it at the other group. Very cinematic. Works very well. Thrilled to see others doing something similar!

The first Skill Challenge video is iconic and has resulted in some amazing sessions from sharing it with different DMs! We had a massive battle against an army of Frost Giants at the gates of Waterdeep, where me and another player flew off to destroy the enemy fleet, while the rest of the party was on the front lines. The scale and simplicity thanks to the Skill Challenge worked SO well and made for an unforgettably EPIC couple sessions!

Congrats on the 100! Hard to pick a favourite though 🤔 I'm new to the channel and a fairly new DM to boot, currently binge watching your videos for ideas and inspiration. The one round skill challenge was an awesome video and really helped me run a great encounter but your house rules for combat, death saves, dual wield fix, long rest and ending a campaign videos have all been ace and got me thinking. Here's to the next 100, keep it up! 👊

Congrats on 100 videos! A useful vid I shared of yours was the discussion on dual wielding. I shared it with my players and even though the consensus was to keep things as is, it generated a fantastic discussion for us. But one of my favorite videos you made were the homebrew rules for death saves and making it more dynamic and exciting. Though my group seems to think I do a good job killing characters with the normal rules....

I was already using minion rules and swarms of low monsters (we call em hordes) but the rules for incremental progression and for scatering the minion around the battlefield are exactly what I needed to make it feel even better. Thanks. this is now my favorite video and I shared it with the other DMs at my table ! Congrats on the 100th video ! Also, I would use a regeneration on the swarm of minion when the fight is in the middle of a vast battle where other minions can join the fight or when reinforcement can join the swarm, maybe the PC will reduce the swarm's damage for a while before concentrating on a boss but has new minions move into the area the swarm gains back it's bonuses and has to be delt with again ... and has the fight goes on the regen drops ... at least if the PC side is winning... maybe the regen alows to ''overcharge'' the swarm has more and more enemy get in the area pushing bonus and damage over the initial level and then the PCs have no other choice but to retreat.... wow this could make lead to a follow up video in itself. Great food for toughts thanks !

Your fixed cantrips video was the 1st I actually implemented in my game, but flanking rules probably helped me the most. My high-level players have huge ac and it was hard to challenge them. But with one of your variants and a couple of modifications, we are now heading into a war and I can rest assured that if a unit of low-level soldiers surrounds one of them they will actually pose at least a small threat to the demigod :D.

My favourite video of yours is definitely the Icewind Dale hombrew pdf (50 plus house rules). I really liked it because I utilised it a ton in my Icewind dale campaign. My personal campaign has a lot of homebrew and uses the Rime of the frostmaiden campaign as a base. My favorite video is the dual wielding video. Every dual wielder I've played has felt super weak, but that homebrew fixes the issue and makes it feel a lot better.

Mind blown! I needed this three months ago for a swarm of skeletons. Ended up being a slog. This mechanic would have given me the encounter experience I wanted the PCs to have. Next time!

Another great tip. One video of yours I've shared and use in my campaign is the death save video. We also use the mechanic of a hit that matches the AC doing half damage. Thanks for all the great advice.

My favorite video is "NEW Full Long Rest System for Dungeons and Dragons 5e". It was one of the first videos I saw and it directly addressed the problem of resting outside the boss room that I was fearing. Having PCs take watch in pairs and encouraging talking has changed the way I approach long rests even as a player.

Funny enough, this is my first video I’ve watched of your channel, so a pretty good reason to make this one my favorite. Minions and swarms are gonna be great to add to my game! Subscribed

I would have to say the long rest and skill check videos are my favorite but i think my most favorite would be the level up video. That brought so many ideas to mind that i would love to do for my future players.

I loved the skill challenges video(s). Skill challenges are something that seem too ambitious for me as a beginner DM but you break it down so well. As I wrote the above I realize that I probably loved the feat-buy system of character creation even more. For my players this has to be the ultimate in opening up new possibilities for them! Keep up the great work! Can't wait for the next 100 videos!

Congratulations on your 100th video milestone. If I could take a group of videos as my favorite it would be your combat homebrews 1, 2, and 3. However, my single favorite video is How to: SKILL CHALLENGE to D&D 5e. Ever since I saw this video I've been brainstorming how to put this idea into my sessions. Skill challenges to escaped towns under attack or a festival prize based on a wild boar hunt. It's been a fun adventure. Thank you for all the great content.

If I had to pick a single favourite video of your's is the revamped resting system, I shared that with my party and it created some of the best roleplay moments in our campaign and after watching that video my players have watched a bunch of your videos and the other DM in my group uses a lot of your homebrew rules including the rest system.

I really liked your Two Weapon Fighting Sucks video. I'm a recently returned to playing D&D person (last played in 3.5 era). I've been having grand fun with 5E. The Candlekeep Mysteries video is an excellent one as well. TBH, I'm very glad the YT algorithm recommended your channel to me.

My favourite video of your that has had the most impact on my games was the long rest video. I was really struggling to give time for my player to do downtime activities chaos amidst all the main chaos. The full rest mechanic was the perfect way to give those that wanted it downtime to build a haunted house and pet zoo and those that wanted to train could get a few combo moves and other benefits of slowing down for a little bit :)

I've been sharing your videos in our D&D discord for a few weeks now actually! Your dual wield video saved one of my girlfriend's characters she was going to reroll. Also the rest system overhaul video was passed around for their trek through Barovia.
