Justin is awesome too. It's always a blast when he and Chris get together and start their shenanigans. One of the funniest things I have ever seen was when Chris and Justin were writing their names in the dirt with an excavator and Justin misspelled his own name. Was HILARIOUS, lol.

The problem of having chickens in the trees is the predator will live in the top of the trees. Coons are known for spending the day in the tree tops. I found putting an electric fence with ground wire around the bottom of the larger trees makes for a loud nightfall. The coons will climb down get hit and then they spend hours growling and talking to you. Remember redneck means bored out of your head and doing things just for fun and that includes watching rabbits hit an electric fence. If a rabbit hits the fence with its ears, it will jump straight up.

A 'little' shack on the way :) Dog Dog you are a star. Ponds look so nice pity about the weed. Chickens in the bush - on our farm they were kept in a very large fenced in enclosure with shed for laying eggs and roosting. The fence was nearly a foot into the ground and about 8ft high - it was the only way to keep the chickens safe and the foxes out. Your idea for complete enclosures at night is a great idea also. Floating surface skimmer removes duckweed easily. No chemicals needed.

The dock height is where I would like it myself. Easier to fish off, you can dangle your legs in the water sitting on edge. And when you do go into the dry spells, the water level will be that much further from the dock.

Haven't seen Justin in a while. Even if duckweed gets into the big pond, it's unlikely to be a problem unless you get prolong periods with no wind. Scooping the stuff out & spreading it on poor soil will help grass grow as it decomposes & costs far less than chemicals.

I feel your pain. We had to move 100 chickens to a place in the woods and we lost 80 of them in less than a year (raccoons)

One of the local chicken keepers has a trailer made out of one of the mobile office trailers. Seems to work. For the dock, get some truck bed liner material and coat the framing in that once it's fully dried out. Keeps the water out and most of them can be tinted like paint. That way water shouldn't bother it.

You just have to give animals appropriate names - fried, baked, adobo, bait, etc.

Around here the nicer docks have a perimeter skirt Consisting of two or three 2 x 12s down to the water. I think you should add a 2x6 below and into the water, better job and out of level dock less noticeable in my opinion.

Geoff, with the wild waterfowl in the big pond, it would not surprise me that the duckweed is already in the big pond, because the waterfowl,will transport it in their feathers and on their feet. I have seen a pond that dries up regularly that is a stock watering tank for cattle, that waterfowl also use, and which was never stocked with fish have shad and carp in the pond in it when the pond was almost totally dry. The Oklahoma wildlife department stated that Ducks and Geese will transport fish eggs on their feet and in the feathers, and this is how some ponds get stocked with evasive unwanted fish and snails, and aquatic plants. The Audubon society on their webpage shows that the culprit is Ducks eating the fish eggs which survive inside the digestive tract, and when they poop, stock the pond with fish. This is how carp get into farm ponds and other bodies of water without being stocked. Pond looks good, and you need Guinea fowl to be guard dogs over the hen houses, they will let you know of predators every time.

If you wait until all that weed in the pond floats up to one end, you can sit on the bank and pick it out with tweezers. Take a cushion with you to sit on. I hope this important aquatic advice helps.

If its bugging you that dock is too low, raise it now b/4 the decking goes on. Should be a foot min. above waterline. Treated lumber doesn't last forever now a days. They got rid of the good stuff that lasted. Pretty easy to do it. You'll just be a bit "pruny" from being up to your neck in water all day. Get the "boys" (Tater & James) back since they set the posts & frame didn't they? Ask Chris to shoot a new grade for you since your pond is out of level!! 😉🤣🤣🤣

Duck weed predators are blue tilapia and grass carps . Work wonders ..

Duckweed has alot of protein an nitrogen ........ makes great fertilizer .........

I've always chucked untreated Duckweed into my Chicken pen, and it never done them any harm. Look forward to the building of the new house, it wouldn't be for SiL Liz by any chance.

Had a Guernsey cow named "Chocolate" due to color... wife's favorite, treated like a pet. After butchering, one day wife asked what's for supper and I said, chocolate. After she figured it out, he was not amused... lol.

We named a steer John Henry for some unknown reason, Had me a JHTB last week , sad memories but great steak.

Seeing what and how commercial chickens are housed and kept predator free , disease free and warm and dry ,you may find you will have to build more suitable chicken and duck housing ,just weigh up the negatives and assess if what you are doing now is a long term way . Yes it's nice to have animals living in freedom but having predators as you have ,must make you think of a better way ,and again you mentioned about getting old ,future abilities may get harder to keep doing what your doing now ,I'm not suggesting that you are old ,but you will be 😮 Enjoy your property and family ,what you have there would be the envy of many many people . I’m not sure this will work for you but my dad taught me this. He told me not to put a pet or animal that can’t defend itself in a fence high enough to keep them in but not the predators out. It creates an easy trap for the predators to catch their prey. At the cabin, our concerns for the dog and dogs family & friends bring is to protect them from deer (they can be vicious with a dog and the local deer will come right in the yard any time of the day), coyotes, black & grizzly bears, and somewhat from cougars. Cougars can jump so high, and they will use the trees. Fortunately if a cougar gets in the fence, because of the hot wire on top of the fence, they won’t get out. The experience will be so terrible for them,they won’t return. 😂😂 I can’t remember if I told you or Brandon from Elite Earthworks (another great guy who is friends with Chris) about the Grizzly that got into our “compound” as my wife calls it. It was well after the time the bear should have been sound asleep hibernating. It was an older boar, maybe 450 or 500 lbs (pretty average for an older boar in our area). I was on the deck enjoying morning coffee when I heard something under the deck,,,, the I see through the railing one enormous head growling at me!! 😂. I got up and jumped at the bears he bolted right into the fence but wouldn’t climb it. Turns out I left the vehicle gate open because I assumed all the bears were hibernating,,,, and he came through there!! I verified this with his tracks. Well the wind blew the gate strut which locks in place with the automatic opener. There’s hot wires down to the ground and all around the gates because the bears could otherwise tear them open. He wouldn’t go near the gate anymore!! 😂😂 go figure. He was trying to dig himself out but then had a nap I guess. They can be drowsy when they are close to hibernating. I opened every gate in the yard,,, at that time we had a little over an acre fenced off. It took me 2 days to get him chased out. He was really scared of humans, but came in to eat apples we left on the ground. My bad there. Once he realized he was free, he RAN!!! haha. Haven’t seen him since. If he survived the winter (there was something keeping him active so late), it will be interesting to see if he comes near the yard again. It’s about time for them to be getting up, so should see some tracks soon. Thought I heard a black bear the other night. Coyotes will harass them sometimes. Anyway, the gates remain closed all the time now, the wires stay hot all the time now, an I learned a lesson. I’m not sure who was more surprised that morning, but I nearly fell down laughing when he bolted when I scared him!! 😂😂😂. They are always dangerous, but can be dealt with humanely most of the time. This time that poor bear was a tortured soul by the time he got out!! 😂😂. But he still lived to see another day. Hope he made it. Sorry Geoff, I get chatting,,,,,, 😂😂. A fence, no matter the height doesn’t protect from above,,,,. My friend volunteers for a fishery on the west coast. They had to cover their ponds from above, herons, eagles, osprey, raccoons mink, otters,,, etc. they did it with chain link. I volunteered to pay for covering two ponds,,,, OMG that was expensive!! Definitely not an option!!😂😂. Next time I open my mouth about paying for something for charity, I will ask how much first!! Heh heh. It was worth it for them. Get about 30% back on the taxes as well. It’s snowing again!! Have about a foot+ to clear here at the cabin. Tractor time! 😊 I’m so very sorry for such a loss Geoff. The real challenge of having lots of animals you care about! You have a big stubborn heart!! 😂😂 I know you will get over it, hopefully the kids are learning, but it’s not too much for them as well. I’ll be thinking about ALL of ya. Take care! Be safe, Eh!
