After a 10 week break, I am back to show you some updates on courses that I am currently developing. This is not only an FYI but a walkthrough of different strategies on taking a course from routing, to preliminary layout to that tough stage of final planting and details.
My background as a real-world superintendent provides a unique way to look at using the 2K21 Course Designer. I have often taken dramatic terrains and show how you can turn them into great courses - that really could exist and be maintained (if money was no problem!)
Let me know how your projects are coming along and the challenges you face.

Jerry! Welcome back! I hope you didn't forget about your discord server. We're all anxiously awaiting your return, even just to say hi. We also wanted to reach out and help you maintain your forum which has unfortunately been overrun with spambots. Come back by and say hi!

Thanks Bill. After years in the business, my body/mind were used to a brief winter hiatus. Guess it caught up with me and I'm back on the course(s) again.

These courses look like a lot of fun! Love the elevation change on the lidar course! How long do you think it will be before we can play them?

I'm hoping for a release of the first course (Blackwater Canyon as of right now) sometime late March. I'm in the painful stage of going hole by hole and planting each shrub, tree and object. It's at least a day per hole. The virginia mountains course will be well beyond that - maybe mid to late spring.

I am doing a fantasy course using the lidar tool. It looks great but the whole area needs to be lowered. How do I lower the whole plot without messing up the elevations? I am trying to lower it closer to the water. Thanks and I love your videos.

Hey Jerry, I’m waiting on delivery of my first Windows gaming PC so I can speed up the design process and hopefully give Lidar a try. Could you maybe give me any tips / pitfalls to avoid as I transition from XBox. Would also appreciate a short critique or fly around my first PGA2K21 course “Las Dunkas Resort Grande”. Nice to see you back..

Welcome back Jerry!!! Glad to here you just took some time off... After just disappearing I was worried you had got Covid or something. Are you still doing the golfdesignforum.com??? I never seen a review for my two #RealLifeCourse. Also you should still create a PGAtour2k21 twitter. The Twitter community is great for advertising your courses and videos. I'm @TDunlop07

I'm still short time to play too many courses but I'll get there. No COVID for me - but I need to Caribbean vacay to reset and move on. I'll check out the Twitter stuff for sure! Thanks.

Do you think it is a must to put cart paths on your courses? To me the cart paths are the worse part of the designer. Just doesn't look real to me. Also do you use generated trees or let the Lidar fill the trees in for you?

Love questions like this.... As a superintendent, I believe that cart paths are a necessary evil to help keep the cattle from driving all over the course. But you don't have to put them in - it's YOUR course. I like to include them BUT I try to do more than just plopping them down in plain view. In some course reviews, I commented on how cartpaths/bridges seem to be the main feature in a view from a tee - and I think that's wrong. Proper placement of cart paths behind trees and mounds - combined with the shaping of the terrain to hide them can do miracles. They are a lot of work to get looking right - as they can look obviously too steep or uneven. I like to see a glimpse of a properly placed cart path now and then but would hate to see it running straight down the side of a fairway - that's just ugly. I REALLY like using the randomly generated trees. Even on the course I'm doing right now (Blackwater Canyon) I often look at certain trees and think they work perfectly into the hole- better than what I could ever create. If anything, the random trees look more realistic than manually placing them - since nature is quite random. When I'm doing a recreation of a real course then I like to use the lidar trees (and species). I then go back in and tweak them for added realism.

@@JerryShields I think the cart paths are ugly to and takes away from the course. I am working on a Lidar area in Tennessee to put my on course on. When I use the Lidar Trees in that area it burns in to your plant meter real bad. So I elected to go with generated trees and through in some of my own trees. Thanks for the videos you do. They are a great help.

I have several request for course recreations and I'm short on time to do them all. Maybe keep watching the channel and when I mention a call for new project ideas then remind me.

It's the theme I'm using - I'll have to double check which ones. It creates a cool look in the distance but is a lot of work planting heavy rough the in the foreground to make the watered part of the course look right. I should do a video on that.
