Gorgeous detailed loco and if I was to have a garden set up then this would be on my list. She runs smoothly and it handles speed well on the controller down to a crawl. Defiantly a nice purchase by you Sam and it looks great with a load of wagons behind it. For me it is back to playing catch up on the rest of your videos.
You prolly dont care at all but does someone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot my account password. I love any assistance you can give me!
@Ulises Ronald I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Woah! That model looks beatiful! So detailed! but lets still remember about the dapol derailing vans :). Btw still that model is awesome! And so are you!
Great review! I ordered one of these with a little trepidation after seeing this as I didn’t know how the model would fare on the long journey from England to Australia with that method of packaging. Thankfully it arrived today fully intact. It’s a great model and I do love the proper owners manual that comes with it. I’ve only seen that once before with a Bachman G Scale Climax I bought years ago. The issue of detail parts falling off seems to be a common one these days with the level of separately applied parts. I’ve had a few Australian HO scale models with bits rattling around in the bottom of the box. Easy enough to fix and only a slight annoyance as long as nothing is actually broken.
Hi. Bryan ( NSW) Aust. here. Have a look at the on-line virtual Catalogue of ETS, CZ. All metal they make all the "ACE" models for the UK Market. Ripper quality and no damage in 40 years of them sending their products to NSW. . Cheers Bryan.
Sam I saw your video and couldn’t tell if you liked this engine. Seriously I enjoyed the video and could tell it was an incredible runner. Isn’t that the ultimate in “model trains”. Such an enjoyable feeling as it runs so smoothly and quietly. Nothing else compares. Do have fun.
Very nice model, tempted to get one in GWR as quite sure someone on my dad's side worked on the GWR back in the day, however there's a rather lovely O Gauge N Class I'm looking at, either that or I'll get a 5" gauge loco to play around with in the garden! Great video as always Sam! ~James
Beautiful model! It’s awesome that they could be driven from the coach even though that had a couple of faults! Lucky to have 4 preserved examples, especially since this type of loco forms the character Oliver!
Beautiful model! I am trying to save enough money for an 14xx to start me off on o gauge! This review has definitely made me more excited in getting this! Remember to wash those buffers everyone! -Jack
Hey Sam, that is an outstanding review of the Dapol O Gauge Great Western 14xx Auto Tank, despite some of the details had been broken off and you have to fix them back on, but it's still a magnificent machine. The running performance was ace. Now you have an O Gauge Great Western 14xx, you'll have to get an Auto Coach to go with it, as your 14xx is in British Railways Brunswick Green Livery with the Late Crest, I would suggest getting the Auto Coach in British Railways Crimson Livery to match it, like how the 14xx & Auto Coach looked back in the 1950's. Once again, an outstanding review on the Dapol O Gauge Great Western 14xx, keep up the good work mate. Yours kindly Jordan Shingler 10/10 & 5 Stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 😉
Sam'sTrains Just wait until you look at American O scale prices. Upwards of 1,200 USD sometimes, and even HO gets upwards of 400-500 a lot more than I would like
It’s kind of sad for the company when it takes a consumer directions and 6 and a half minutes to ru the train they’d spent 200 pounds on and it still breaks.
Hi Sam. Great video. I bought one of the class 14xx, as well. I bought some polyester ribbon and put a length of it around the plastic packaging that holds the loco. I left about 5 inches of extra ribbon on each side so I have enough to get a good grip and use that to lift the plastic packaging out of the box so I don't have to use my fingers to try and grasp it. It eliminates the chances of my fingers doing any damage to the loco.
I had a notification that Rails of Sheffield were selling this at £145. Tempted, looked up your review Sam. You loved it so I press buy. Fingers crossed. Next I noticed the review of the GWR auto coach. Well Rails have this going for £125. Also tempting. Thanks Sam. I’m an O gauge convert.
I'm surprised how smooth of a runner this Loco is and also Sam. I want to say please, please, make a oo scale collection video. Both Locos and rolling stone both coaches and trucks
I picked one of these up a few weeks ago (4800 in as-built livery with "GREAT WESTERN" fully spelled out on the tanks), so when I saw you finally had one I was thinking yeah, you're in for a treat, mate! My heart sank when I saw that leaf spring lying on the floor while you were unboxing her. Mine didn't have any issues with damaged parts, so I was disappointed to see that the packaging failed to protect yours. I agree though, that heavy plastic shell seemed like overkill. Mine didn't have any noticeable paintwork issues either, but it's unlined so I suppose there's less to go wrong there. Still, after those little faults, I was relieved to see that yours is as smooth and quiet and impressive a runner as mine is. I absolutely love this thing. I also have the Dapol O pannier, which has animated valve gear. That's a really cool feature, but it's very difficult to see the motion when the model is underway. The valve gear is more exposed on the 14xx, which would have made animated valve motion more impressive on this model, but the eccentrics for the valve gear would have to share an axle with the drive gear, and there probably isn't enough room for both. The pannier has the eccentrics on the second axle and the drive gear on the third, but of course the 14xx only has the two driven axles. What the 14xx valve gear lacks in movement, it makes up for by being more realistic in appearance though. One cool feature you missed is that the cab roof is removable, held on by magnets. That makes it much easier to admire the cab interior details, as well as to close the cab doors once they have been opened.
Cheers Richard - glad to hear you got a good one! I'm all for overkill packaging, but ONLY if it does a good job protecting the models - otherwise it's just a bige waste, lol! Ooh yeah those Panniers look amazing!! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Sam'sTrains the pannier is an impressive model, the level of detail is right up there with the 14xx. Performance-wise, mine is a little noisier than the 14xx and not quite as smooth, but still a great engine for the money.
Absolutely beautiful. This review confirmed how awesome they are, so I'm definitely going to buy one after my birthday in just over a month. I got a dapol 14t tanker today, is awesome, and I'm currently sat making a Parkside ex-SNCF 16t mineral wagon kit. Also my kernow/djm photographic grey 1361 arrived today, and it looks fantastic. Was very jerky at low speed on my R965 controller, so I googled it and it seems to be a feedback controller, unusual for a 20 year old trainset controller, so I swapped it for my H&M duette, and the saddle tank runs superbly with the controller set to full wave high resistance.
Thanks so much mate - yeah definitely, they're just amazing - one of the best models I've ever seen! I've heard those tankers are good too! Glad you like your 1361! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)
The autocoach service between Gloucester and Chalford was a top link job at Gloucester Horton Road depot on a par with working the Cheltenham Spa Express to Paddington. So quite important really and not just banished to branch lines.
@@SamsTrains My pleasure :) The other story that always goes with the autotanks at Gloucester is the races they used to have with midland region expresses. There is a length of line where the old GWR Gloucester to Swindon (and Chalford) runs parallel to the old midland line between Gloucester and Bristol. The legend is that if the autotrain got to the piece of track the same time as a midlands express they would give the tank everything and at least hold their own or win against the midland black fives, patriots etc. Gloucester used to have an ex-GWR and an ex-Midland shed so there was quite a lot of "friendly" rivalry!!
Fun fact: Those pickups are identical to the ones used on the old AirFix 14xx. I have one, they don't run too well, and mine needs a new chassis plate, but they are beautiful little things. Truly the crowning jewel in my collection.
Great video sam. Really like the history of the locomotive. Hope you enjoy your new locomotive. Can not wait to see more videos on O gauge models. Take care of yourself.
Hehehe... poor Dapol. They must have thought; "Sam was not impressed last time with the Terrier packaging; how can we impress him? Lets make a plastic box to surround it so the steps don't get knocked off!" Doh! Nice review Sam. Cheers mukka.
Hey Sam, put some dcc sound into it. My grandpa had 2 atlas O scale locos and running on a loop around the garage with a few box cars. Adding sound will just take your railroad to a whole new dimension. You don’t need a big sorting yard with lots of cars. Branchline work is awsome with sound, especially if you can do it in a larger gauge. My favourite loco is my broadway Mikado in Great Northern (American) livery. I just run it with a few cars and a caboose, but ringing its bell and blowing its whistle as it come around is pretty awesome, all the fun I need! (Until I get a 4-4-0 Dcc/sound :) ).
Beautiful! Love the 14XX's. Not a GWR person my self, having grown up in the Midland region. But I do like the older GWR locos, thanks for the review Sam and have a good one! :D
My favorite design of any British loco ever. I actually first found out about it through Thomas the tank engine here in the US with the character Oliver
Cool video Sam it is great to see the 0 gauge railway again. it is a shame that a bit of the model fell off but yes it is a very cool model. I can't believe the packaging Dapol really care about the protection of their models. it is a very nice model.
Hi Sam, Lovely loco! Pity about the packaging and quality problems though. Have you ever considered doing some OO9 (narrow gauge) modelling? Great vid as always! Rowan :)
I hope one day, the British Gov. work together to re-build an E2. The first one the last ones were scrapped in 1963. I'd love to see them just bring back a small series of E2's. Cause here in the US, we already re-built and now have a track working Big Boy (UP 4-8-8-4) 4014.
A 14XX, nice, can you do a gaming review on Flashing Lights? It’s basically an emergency service simulator you can play as a police officer, a paramedic or a fire fighter, it takes place in America it costs $19.99 when I got it, and £191 for a tank engine? Wow that’s quite expensive
Glad to see more O gauge, sorry to see the damage. Jennifer Kirk got one to, though she didn’t seem to have trouble. Perhaps you have to get used to the packaging. In any case, glad to see more of the O gauge layout.
Thanks a lot Patrick - maybe I did get unlucky, but I'm in no doubt that the package was of poor design - the damage didn't occur in my care!! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Maybe a little tip the next time you open up a loco in that packaging maybe unscrew the screws on the bottom first so you don’t have to balance it on it’s funnel and dome and reduce the risk of damaging it
That would have made it worse - removing the base screws first would have allowed the loco to drop into the plastic case! I followed the instructions - they clearly stated that the base screws should be removed last! Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Hi Sam! Love the 14xx! I'm not an O gauge modeller, but I found the senteniel steam shunter O gauge for something like £120 at rails, that's like oo gauge prices!
I would have given it a 5 for value too. Not too long ago you couldnt get an O gauge loco for much less than a grand, the reason I have g scale / 16mm is because i could not afford O gauge when I was building my garden railway. Nice review Sam.
Amazing review Sam! I always see your videos they are so good and well made and your explanation is the best keep the good work! 0:12 I got kinda scared I thought it was gonna fall , the track bended down I got scared xd
I think Bachmann created some O gauge Thomas and Friends® locomotives (I think it's Thomas, Percy, James, and Emily), if it's not O gauge, it's G gauge. Anyway, if there O gauge, then I think we found a set of models you can test. If not, can you test an O gauge 08 Shunter?
Wow, I always thought "0" gauge were big and cumbersome with no real style. Referring to the old tin ones of course. That 14xx changes the game, In my opinion. Nice to see my name in shot on the yellow plank waggon 👍😎👍 MDS (Dean).
you should make yourself a shunters hook or somthing to make coupling up to rolling stock easier what you do you get a thin rod of copper (or whatver bends verry easaly and somthing that is strong) and you bend it in a bit of an J shape i did the same thing for when i was playing with my grandfathers bigger model trains and it worked well
hello sam I think the dapol O gauge 14XX looks absolutely gorgeous and can you review a tender engine for your next O gauge review like one of hattons O gauge A1/A3 and will you b getting coaches for your O gauge layout and love the video from david
