The "for fans of" thing is definitely common is book publishing, although it sometimes annoys me even then because often the two books will be nothing even remotely alike and you can tell the marketing team just wanted to capitalize off of another, more popular book. Anyway, it's definitely...different for tarot deck marketing to do that. Idk how I feel about it, but that deck definitely feels like a cousin of the Wild Unknown. Especially that card with the rays of light, very similar to the WU sun card. The Pulp Girls tarot feels like an even younger but more clone-like version of the Modern Witch tarot, so I'll probably pass since I already have that deck. It's very cute though and would be perfect for beginners who might find the original RWS art unpleasing. I love the I Don't Care oracle and can't wait to get its sister deck! The creator said that even though the campaign will likely fail they're working on still printing the decks anyway.
Thank you for sharing this!!! After this video I bounced this off a couple people and it absolutely is an accepted thing in the publishing world - and the publisher is the same one who published TWU but... yeah it sat funny because the art does seem a little close in style...
Hi Lisa, thank you so much for including my project in your Hot Takes! It's meaning a lot for me! I'm the creator of The I don't care oracle 1 and 2 . Thank you a lot!! Have a nice day/night! xoxo from Belgium Steph
Thank you for reviewing our deck Lisa, Essence of Three Oracle: I always watch your Hot Takes sometimes a couple of times when I need help deciding whether to buy or not to buy.😊
The creators of the Amenti Oracle came up with a Everyday Amenti workbook which is a great compliment to the deck and works with the energy of one card per week in a really cool way. I recommend it to anyone wanting to get more out of their Amenti Oracle!
I found the Darkside Skeleton Tarot by Da Brigh from a link to their website, so I backed and shared it. I had no idea there was controversy around its authenticity. But this explains why it has had such a slow start. My interest was also to support the artist as these days AI generated decks are on the market and I don’t want to support these. They directly threaten the artist’s livelihood.
Thank you so much for your interest in my artwork. Indeed, the creation of an entire deck by an artist on paper is a huge work and it is a pity that there are scammers in the world who have no conscience and simply steal someone else's work (in this case, my work). I really hope that our project will please a huge number of tarot lovers 🖤
The Herbal Astrology Oracle has completely blown my mind! I got it on a whim because it was on a flash sale, I had zero expectations and holy wow, it’s eerily tuned in, I love the guidebook info-just the right amount of information, and I love the history to guidance ratio. Using it for ancestor of affinity work and it’s just. Scrumptious and magic and powerful. ❤
I’ve been curious about how the DC deck will be because DC has done a tarot deck before, the Justice League Tarot, and that deck is just perfect. It was my first deck and still my favorite deck. If this new one is good, it will let others have a DC tarot deck because Justice League Tarot has been out of print for some years now. Though looking at this, the Justice League Tarot does look better. The Justice League Tarot has fully illustrated minors. They aren’t pip-like at all. They all have characters for the minors as well, and they all work so so well for each card too. (Also, just saying, Nightwing better be the Knight of Cups in the new deck too.) It would be curious to see how they’d read together in a spread using two decks. (Maybe throw the Vertigo Tarot in there too. Vertigo Tarot and Justice League Tarot do share a few characters.) Obviously, the deck I’m most excited for is my own which is only just now getting printed now in a small batch, so I’ve not suggested it to anyone before 😂
Your hot takes videos are so fun to watch. I like the look of the Sacred Web Tarot, I do see that "for fans of" in books and movies. I think the publisher/seller is using it to create a marketing strategy. I also really like the The Darkside Skeleton Tarot and I did back it. I'm so glad the actual creator/artist is getting a chance to put his unique artistic style out into the world. Thanks for doing the research you did on this deck! I hope you and Peggy are having a fun weekend.
Yesss you're so right that it's a valid/normal marketing strategy... I think it just rubbed me a little wrong because the art looked a little like it was trying to be like the Wild Unknown.... so it hit funny for me, is all.
just ordered my Darkside Skeleton premium edition earlier from a authentic local playing card/tarot shop here in the 🇵🇭. 😊 excited for the black plastic cardstock!
Hi there. I just received the Modern Goddess Tarot deck.. So far, it seems to bring the "energy of the goddesses down to earth." The Lustrous Lenormand is a reprint of Marchetti's Sui Generis Lenormand. Not sure if I need two copies but I am curious about the box. The SG came in a beautiful satin pouch. For the third time I'm seeing the Beautiful Beasts deck, so I am backing it. The Macondo deck was a no-brainer! I am currently featuring some decks in honour of Hispanic Heritage month 15 Sep-15Oct, on my channel. Thanks for the Hot Takes. It makes my shopping easier.😉
That faerie magical creatures tarot for $18 is very confusing haha Also: Esprit de corps is defined as the pride and honor shared by the members of a group. An example of esprit de corps is a group marching to bring awareness to a current issue.
Hi, your friendly local book reviewer here to confirm that Chronicle Prism is a Chronicle Books imprint 🙂 I've really enjoyed their decks and books! I am SO interested in that Modern Nirvana, ooh, I haven't reviewed decks for Chronicle but I juuuust posted a very positive review for one of Prism's recent books so maybe I should be like "heyyyy friends." 😂 😂 Re: the Sacred Web, I had absolutely went "oh shit, no" when you showed the Amazon page and the images, cause yeah, it DOES feel that way. Then I went to the creators' site and for what it's worth, they don't mention the Wild Unknown there, so it's possible it was just the publisher being like "ooh, comps?" But it's so hard to know without knowing! According to their site, the illustrator had a traumatic brain injury, though, and started drawing images that his mother "came to understand were the beginnings of a tarot deck." So it does seem like EITHER it's a big coincidence, or maybe it's that this guy made some artwork and his mom was familiar with the Wild Unknown and thought "hmmm..." Hopefully just a coincidence! I did notice that they donate 15% proceeds to orgs focused on the environment, LGBTQIA rights, and destigmatizing mental health issues, though, so I can't help but be a fan of that. Also, the book illustrator, who is the sister of the card illustrator, is non-binary, so I actually wonder if maybe the brother drew the animal imagery, they wanted to make it rainbow as a queer nod, and boom you have a Wild Unknown lookalike. Of course, this is all speculation, but I thought it was interesting (and at least POSSIBLE that they just independently came to a similar place.) SO EXCITED about Fyodor Pavlov, just reallllly hoping for decent cardstock (if I'm remembering right that USG is the one with the really inconsistent stock).
Omg that Journey of a Lonely Soul looks AMAZING!! It makes me think of River from Firefly, the card "Like a leaf on the wind" especially, it was something Wash always said!!
Always enjoy these hot takes. Of these... I'm keenly awaiting the mass market Fydor Pavlov, and I'm also backing the Macondo Tarot. Is it weird that it wouldn't even be my first deck with a fart in it? Trionfi della Luna Illustrated has one too, right on the box! I feel like Marquez is a wonderful inspiration for a deck and the creators have really thought out some nice rewards including a detailed bilingual book; style and pips won't be for everyone but I do hope the campaign succeeds!
With the sacred Web tarot, there is no illusion that they are selling a deck that is like a very popular tarot deck. Please give us your money and you will own a similar but not WUK. I am getting jaded with the same reiterations of the same thing. I had to unsubscribe from James R Eads cause the marketing has gone hard. I think this is me though, everyone is on different paths and stages of their journey. So I breathe and say, this isn't meant for me. Even though I love my WUK!! Lolol Eta: it is almost like they are listening to tarot tube 🤔🤔🤔🤣
RE: the last sentence, I think so too. The increased production quality that mimics what we've gotten used to from indie decks is a huge indication that they're taking cues from tarot tube (for example the fancy boxes that are no doubt ramping up the prices). Mass market decks are starting to look and be priced similarly to indie decks these days I've noticed.
Great preview of the decks to come 🙂 Thank you! I really like the Darkside Skeleton deck. I'm glad the creator has prevailed :-) I have neverr backed anything before but really would like to back this one. When I back it, will I get charged right away? Or how does it work? TIA 🙂
@@brendabooprather that depends on the campaign. You should be able to find all the details on kickstarter. If you click to pledge you can explore without getting charged and that is how you can find out I'd it is extra for shipping as well.
"For fans of" is used all the time in marketing, for example to let you know if you liked one movie or novel you'll probably like this other one. Sure it plays off feelings about the other, but it also saves consumers time, helps them find things that are their style. I don't think the Sacred Web Tarot images you showed are any kind of rip-off of Wild Unknown myself. Mystical Birds reminds me a bit of Dream Visions which is a favorite. I believe it's pronounced Duh-bri (long "i"). Thanks for sharing!
Agreed with the “for fans of.” I see it alllll the time in fiction, especially YA novels and fantasy. It can be overused, but it can also be a good clue into who the publishers think the audience for that item is, like who they think it will appeal to. It doesn’t bother me.
Yessss I've learned a lot from those i asked about it after filming this and from all of your comments! It sounds like it is a totally normal/fine practice. I think it sat wierd for me because the art style seems so close to TWU/Kim Krans and that just felt a little.... uncomfy for me. I definitely don't think it's a ripoff.. but it does seem similar and so the similarities combined with the marketing strategy made it feel wierd for me on Kim Krans' behalf LOL I could just be touchy about this stuff though with all the *actual* art theft going on these days though... which is totally on me!
@@Lisa_Papez totally get that! It can feel shady in the publishing world, too, since you often see it on books that are capitalizing off of other books’ success, like ya vampire novels that flooded the market after Twilight. The tarot market is still small enough that similar products are very obvious.
@@Lisa_Papez The way we feel about a deck for whatever reason matters a lot to how well we work with it, I'm totally with you there! I just try to avoid the publisher's descriptions as they just want to sell decks, but that's hard to do when the deck hasn't even been published and it's all you have to go on! Really enjoy these Hot Takes, by the way!
Sacred web interests me.. but it's not exactly like wild unknown.. the pip in wild unknown has very less animals and the guidebook doesn't explain any animal symbolism..
Loved this as always lisa ❤️ oh and the piggy backing on the wild unknown doesn’t sit right with me either, as an artist if I was Kim krans and hadn’t been consulted and ok’d it I’d feel copied and then on top of that used for free advertising. ❤️
Yeah... as a marketing strategy since the publisher is the same one who published the Wild Unknown, it's valid.. but I think it just hit me funny because the art seems like it's ... similarish.... like not a copy just... a similar minimalist style - so it sat funny for me.
@@brknarow22 my husband already teases me over my can coozie collection, see how useful they are?! I'm already using small zip makeup (and whatever) bags, even my mom got into it and made some in crochet after seeing them online 😆
Thank you for the previews. So many new decks to choose from, I have a feeling that before Christmas there will be many more ! love it ! But I must say some of the mass market decks are getting into the indie pricing ! Have a Great Day , you too Peggy !
I’m so drawn to the pulp girls and modern goddess tarot decks coming soon! I thought they’d seem far too young for me but with how much I love the good karma tarot I think I’ll give them a go ❤
Absolutely love listening to you speak! Love your voice and the beautiful explanations and reviews in every single video! You are such a positive person!
been wanting to buy a new oracle or tarot deck but can't resonates with the deck I've only seen on stores that's already released. seems like I feel guided to see this video. and omg so many new beautiful and amazing decks coming out before December. i'm already excited. 😍🥰🥰🥰 thank you so much for sharing this.
For The Sacred Web Tarot, it depends if it is the creator or the seller who wrote it. If its the creator, well, I kinda agree with what you are saying. If it's the seller, I guess its not the creators fault, just the seller who wants to sell? Or the publisher maby? I don't really know who writes the description, but that's what I think.
that is not Art Deco, AD is characterized by the use of straight lines (with a few strict and controlled curves, no free-flowing curves in here) and very defined angles in a limited color palet of gold, black, off-white or ivory, jade or emerald green, lapis blue, and sometimes accented with: silver, platinum, and rubi red
The sacred web though pretty looks like a copy of the wild unknown. I am kind of disappointed about that. Some of the cards look like copies of Kim’s art. Hmmmmm.
Often watching these videos is rather pricey, but this month you’ve saved me money. 😄 I hadn’t heard the Beautiful Beasts was up again, and I couldn’t afford it otherwise, so I dropped Tarot of the Everlasting Day, which is significantly more expensive.
In publishing, you generally add comparisons to your cover letter, in order to get the publisher interested. I would say that the deck similar to The Wild Unknown used that as a comp to get published, and their publishing house encouraged them to include it in the description too, because of how popular it was. I seriously doubt that was the choice of the deck author.
The Modern Nirvana oracle looks like if the Amenti oracle had a baby with the Slow Holler tarot 😃 it's a cool one, I will keep an eye on it for sure, need to see more cards 👁🗨
Lisa, love your hot takes!🔥🧡 Are you going to make a video about the Multi-Dimensional Devas deck? I’m obsessed with it, but don’t know if I will use it.😅
I love modern portrait art so the Queer Revolution really grabs me. It's "analogue" watercolour btw, you can see the artist paint the cards in the video. I haven't received an actual deck for two months because all my tarot budget since then has gone to Kickstarter. But it's basically buying art, right?
Lisa… do you really need another Lenormand giving you tried to declutter yours so much ? 😂 Still look great 🤩! Thank you for this Hot take ! I love the Queer revolution art but it’s missing more photos of the cards and updates from the creator to fund properly. More photos are available on instagram!
I have to say i am not all that keen on the art work for the modern nirvana deck but i LOVE Kat graham as an actress, was a huge fan of her on the vampire diaries, so i MIGHT pick that deck up just for that lol
Despite all the comparisons between the two I've seen, I've never felt like the Naked Heart was that close to TWU... Jillian's art seems soooo different to me than Kim Krans.... whereas there definitely were a couple cards in the preview image of the Sacred Web that felt super similar. But then again - this stuff is all super subjective soooooo...
@@Lisa_Papez unfortunately it just does another search. I’m not seeing the tarot even when looking through search results( and I’m also looking on Canadian Amazon) it doesn’t look to be for sale there? It does appear to be on American Amazon. Maybe that’s where the disconnect is happening. Thanks for checking.
