I'm not an art major or anything. My parents just dragged me to a lot of museums when I was young, I think they were afraid I was turning into a barbarian. I always loved Caravaggio's work, so naturalistic and it seemed almost alive. The use of light and shadow is genius. Gracias Cesar!
It always amazes me to get in close visually, and to realize that the greatest painters in the world made mistakes even in their greatest works. It's easy to make yourself believe the greats were perfect, but this humanization really brings things into perspective.
I've seen paintings that are 200 plus years old that are amazing, but show where they had made a change in some architecture, and the old direction has now started showing through. In a lot Bosch's paintings, I believe he made the under drawings outlined in ink, and a lot of the ink is starting to show through, especially where he went a different direction.

Thanks very much for this very interesting and informative video! So, Caravaggio used a combined technique that accomplished what he needed without dogmatic dedication to a formal technical philosophy. This is actually what I might expect from him and not out of character and illustrates how really accomplished he was. He moved and created as he liked. He really knew what he was doing!

Buenísimo video,es evidente que naturalmente tenía que usar veladuras para lograr esas pieles y telas(pliegues) tan maravillosas.Lo que no se si tu o alguien sabe como dibujaba o planteaba la composición, ya que no hay dibujos preparatorios ni bocetos para sus cuadros.Es todo un misterio ...gracias por el video.

If I'm understanding this correctly, Caravaggio would paint with a mid tone, then paint directly with light tones, and glaze in the dark tones, more or less. Is that the basic concept?
Paint like yourself if you are an artist. If not, just admire his work and go about your business. I have been an artist for close to 40 years as a pro, and I never bothered with their exact techniques though I understand glazing, etc. I could have gone that classical direction then, but I chose a different one. This stuff is for art historians, etc.
The glazing of the darks illustrates an obsession of many painters and other visual artists: details in the shadows! Many painters don't even use plain black paints preffering to add color to the black because it's more interesting and has more visual depth.
@@MichaelMarko I use black! Manet used black and he was a great artist. Nothing wrong with using black! You have to know where and how! The preferred colors for dark areas in the old times were brown and black! Rembrandt and others used it. Study before posting!

And I didn't limit my comment to the practice of old masters. lots of artists add color to black. And I learned about rubbing blue into the blacks when hand tinting black and white photos!. LOL - AND SINCE we're on the subject, maybe you wouldn't mind telling me exactly when to do what. When do you use black and when do you modify it. You're an expert. I'd love your take.

Much of the byzanthine icon painting technique seems to still be used and adapted for painting the flesh in the XVth and XVIth century. There are several steps to it: first you paint all over the flesh with the dark 'proplasmos', usually made of ochre, black and some white (resulting a verdaccio). This proplasmos corresponds to the dark imprimatura Carravagio uses, which becomes the shaded areas in the painting. After this, the first 'light' is applied, a mixture of yellow ocher, some red and white. This is well blended with the proplasmos in the transition areas, using an intermediate color between the first light and the proplasmos. Following the same procedures, a second and then a third light is applied. The rule here is to go more and more rosy in color (more red than ochre and obviously more white). Finally there are a few (very few) highligts which are painted with pure white. In the case of Caravaggio, these could be the reflections in the eye or a very small area which gets the most light. Studies show that he put these final higlights of white or almost white with some egg tempera binder. There is a youtube channel named 'Painting the light' belonging to a Greek icon painter. He ocassionaly paints old master studies where he (most of the time) applies this byzanthine icon technique. You should watch some of his demonstrations, it's a very sound and logical technique and I really think it was used by many old masters.

Estimado Cesar estoy realmente y gratamente en shock con los close up que demuestras en la pieza en el 8:01 las veladuras, las grietas del canvas, la forma de la pincelada etc. Usar la técnica de Caravaggio es algo latente en mi trabajo desde que me dedico profesionalmente a pintar hace 4 años y jamás se deja de aprender.
