The Story of Graphene
www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk/...
"Fascination with this material stems from its remarkable physical properties and the potential applications these properties offer for the future. Although scientists knew one atom thick, two-dimensional crystal graphene existed, no-one had worked out how to extract it from graphite."
Scientists cook up material 200 times stronger than steel out of soybean oil
www.abc.net.au/news/2017-01-31...
"Many production techniques involve the use of intense heat in a vacuum, and expensive ingredients like high-purity metals and explosive compressed gases. Now a team of Australian scientists has detailed how they turned cheap everyday ingredients into graphene under normal air conditions. They said the research, published today in the journal Nature Communications, may open up a new avenue for the low-cost synthesis of the highly sought-after material."
Physicists patent detonation technique to mass-produce graphene
phys.org/news/2017-01-physici...
"Forget chemicals, catalysts and expensive machinery-a Kansas State University team of physicists has discovered a way to mass-produce graphene with three ingredients: hydrocarbon gas, oxygen and a spark plug. Their method is simple: Fill a chamber with acetylene or ethylene gas and oxygen. Use a vehicle spark plug to create a contained detonation. Collect the graphene that forms afterward."

don't forget all the other stuff we got recently. Like (maybe) metallic hydrogen, crystal data storage, the beginning of quantum computers, various other new space flight technologies, getting closer and closer to the singulatity and also literally sci fi warfare with drone swarms, masers, lasers, rail guns etc we really made some good progress as a civilisation recently now we only need to figure out how to use all this stuff. also we need to find some sort of solution for overcoming the aproaching barriers of the fermi paradox but I guess this won't happen anyways.

Also, there is talk about using the nuclear waste we have lying around and storing them in industrial diamonds. They can make, a bit weak, but long-lasting batteries, which is awesome for pacemakers. And because it is in a diamond, the radiation can't get out. What a time to be alive!

His point is that graphite works as pencil lead because it is fragile and flaky, leaving behind a trail when rubbed/scraped. Graphene, though the name is similar, is completely different than graphite and wouldn't flake when rubbed. If it was pointed it really would be more of a weapon than anything.

I thought this video was going to be about the new MIT method where they use a spool of copper foil and move it through a reaction chamber sort of like a pizza oven. Space batteries. Graphene (like carbon used in the first nuclear graphite pile reactors) easily absorbs beta and alpha radiation (which can't penetrate skin or a sheet of paper). Unlike other materials it turns that radiation into electricity instead of heat. Heat is really difficult to get rid of in the vacuum of space and requires backbody radiators (heat sinks) in order to dissipate the generated heat. If RTGs could use a radioactive material that primarily emits beta and alpha radiation (e.g. Amercium found in typical home use ionization smoke detectors), then not only do you have a source of electricity that doesn't require heavy and cumbersome heat sinks to be lifted into orbit, but you also don't have to put the battery out on the end of a boom arm so it doesn't destroy your electronics and people.

Should probably clarify that the CVD-grown large film of graphene is *NOT* a single graphene sheet. It is made up of many tiny grains of 2-3 um sized graphene sheets. Thus, it is *NOT* mechanically strong, and would immediately smear like graphite if you ran your finger across it or tried to grab it. It is meant for electric applications (like screens) where proper mechanical support is provided, not as a building material itself.

I’m really worried about what might happen ones we start using graphene a little too excessive like we did with plastic. Like the story of King Midas, everything he touched turned to gold, but so did his food and his daughter. Leaving him starving and alone, knowing that his powers have turned to a curse and already being too late to take it all back. This story is exactly like us when we first discovered Plastic and how this would “solve everything “. With all it’s amazing properties and the cheap cost of mas producing them, we took it all for granted making it a huge problem in our lives. Destroying each one of us like the curse of King Midas. We should be careful and cautious about the risks of using graphene on the long run. But better yet HOW we use graphene and to always remember that nothing this GREAT ever comes without a PRICE TO PAY. So just please be careful and don’t ever let our arrogance use this amazing material taken and used for granted. So I leave you with this question: Are we ready to take on another amazing power/material or would we just take it all for granted? Again...

Charles DeSol We also need a Secretary of Education that works to get rid of Common Core throughout the United States, since Common Core doesn't teach math fast enough for students to be ready for calculus when they enter College, and they need to take a whole extra year in order to start into math, science, and engineering degrees, which then discourages students from starting those majors.

Also full audio spectrum earplugs (with audio player functionality of course. Something tells me that the edges of those spectrums may be stretched a little with this too. Physics in general will just have to reboot and rebuild itself. Will be amazing. I sincerely hope to see it happen.

Yes, I agree. I hate the whole pop culture garbage that sets the "cool" stereotype as a sports-worshipping football player while shaming anyone with a brain. It lures kids in, tells them that they have to act a certain way in order to have any friends, and puts them into a career where they have a microscopically small chance of winning anything. If they do win, they beg the government for multi-million dollar stadiums with little scientific use, and continue to spread the destructive and misleading message of "sports=cool".

I'm using a bread batter method. Trick is to suspend the graphene in a carbon foam that is super heated till all the organic material is turned to carbon. At this point I can super dope it with other graphene because it will still be porous. Also my batter will have a few other oxides added but that's a secret.

the better question is "what am I building?" Switch explosion to implosion and think of your energy transfer mechanism backwards... then instead of scattered veins of graphene you'll get the most dense formation of graphene relative to the amount of material (carbon, aerogel, ?, ?) there are more components necessary but I'm not gonna do all your work for you... nice video, appeals to all kinds of thinkers and creators... cheers!

If the graphene can be braided or twisted than placed into a more stable carbon fiber nanotube jacket then coated like electrical motor winding wire. It might be able to be used to wind electrical motors/generators, which would drastically reduce weight and potentially improve performance.

Can graphene be used for underwater exploration. Because if it's stronger than steel we can use it for to dive deeper in the ocean so it can resist the extreme pressure, and if it's lighter than a plastic bag we use it for buoyancy. I'm working on something myself but it practically us going to take me forever to figure this thing out.

I once had a dream about a skateboard rolling down the sidewalk. After it rounded a corner, it disappeared, then reappeared with electronics on it. There was a motor the size of a mini-water bottle with a built in speed controller that doubled as a heat sink by absorbing the heat from the motor, and using some kind of peltier module technology to power itself and the rest of the control features. The motor itself was powered with a next-gen graphene super capacitor that was as thick as a credit card, and was the shape of the board. The battery sat inbetween the top and bottom layers of the board-keeping it protected. It was designed in such a way that other battery cells of the same kind could be snapped on to increase capacity. The top layer of the board was some kind of reinforced solar panel that constantly charged said battery.
