In this video, the Synth Hunter shows how to repair a Roland Juno G with a damaged display inexpensively. A well-known issue is the failure of the original display. With advancing age, the adhesion of the ribbon cable loosens and the display only works partially or not at all. Apparently there are no original displays as spare parts. Roland has dropped support for this device. For a long time there was no solution to the problem, but now there is the possibility to repair a Roland Juno G using the microcontroller Raspberry Pi Pico and a conventional LCD display. For an experienced electronics hobbyist, this is not a big challenge, there may soon be a plug & play solution and then the conversion should be feasible for a layman.
In diesem Video zeigt der Synth Hunter, wie man kostengünstig einen Roland Juno G mit Displayschaden wieder reparieren kann. Ein altbekanntes Thema ist das Versagen des Originaldisplays. Mit fortschreitendem Alter lösen sich die Verklebungen der Flachbandkabel und das Display funktioniert nur noch Teilweise bis gar nicht mehr. Angeblich gibt es keine Originaldisplays als Ersatzteil. Roland hat den Support für dieses Gerät aufgegeben. Lange Zeit gab es keine Lösung für das Problem, doch jetzt gibt es die Möglichkeit einen Roland Juno G mit Hilfe des Microcontrollers Raspberry Pi Pico und einem herkömmlichen LCD Display zu reparieren. Für einen versierten Hobbyelektroniker stellt das keine große Herausforderung da, eventuell gibt es auch bald eine Plug & Play Lösung und dann sollte der Umbau auf für einen Laien machbar sein.

Hello, mine is working but it's not stable. What might be the problem? I soldered the wires directly to the flex ribbon and I think I did it right sinces it worked. It's opening just like in yours but it's not stable and gets off.

I did everything in order, but I stopped when connecting the wires between the components and I don't know what to do next. On the screen, I don't know from which side pin 1 starts. Geschafft 👍🎹 mein Juno ist wieder am Start. Er läuft wieder mit neuem Display. Die Mühe hat sich echt gelohnt. Ein Tip von mir, bei der Verkabelung sollte man genau aufpassen wo welche Leitung hingehört. Ich habe meinen Raspberry zum Glück komplett mit Steckverbindung aufgebaut. So konnte ich Fehler einfach korrigieren ohne jedesmal zu löten. Die Adapterplatine vom Juno zum Raspberry habe ich im großen Onlineversandhaus (Amaz..) bekommen. Es gibt sie wohl nur als 26 Pin Version. Geht aber trotzdem. Nochmal besten Dank fürs Video und auch an den Entwickler.

Halli hallo, wir haben alles in den Startlöchern für die Reparatur von sage und schreibe zwei Juno-G. Eine Lösung für die miesen Flachkabel ohne Platine ist erdacht und kann umgesetzt werden, allerdings würde ich auch gerne das ganze mit Platine durchdenken. Kannst Du mir sagen, welche Platine Du wo in der großen Bucht gefunden hast?

@@e667bot Hallo, ich habe bei Amazon die gefundrn: FPC FFC PCB Konverter Steckerplatine 20P 0.5mm auf Buchsenseite 1mm Rückseit auf DIP 2.54 mm Das als Suchbegriff sollte reichen. Habe leider keinen Link. Achte sehr genau auf die Verkabelung. Da schleicht sich schnell ein Fehler ein. Lieber mehrfach kontrollieren. Viel Glück

Geniales Video, mein Juno liegt schon 2 Jahre defekt zu Hause. Endlich kann ich die Reparatur angehen. Hätte allerdings eine Frage zur Verbindungsplatine. Wie wird die Belegung 1-18 gezählt? in der Reihe oder gegenüberliegend? Vielen Dank Gruß Volker

Hallo, Cooler Kanal, gut Erklärt! Mich würde es mal interessieren ob man bei einem „Yamaha QY100“ ein beleuchtetes Display einbauen kann!? Hab mal ein Bausatz gekauft, wo man LEDs bekommen hat die man Seitlich ans Display kleben konnte, die dann ins Display reingeleuchtet haben, die waren meiner Meinung nach zu Dunkel, vielleicht hab ich auch nicht die richtige Spannung angelegt!? Vielleicht bekommst du ja mal so ein Gerät, das fände ich interessant!!

Hallo Synth-H! Liege ich richtig, dass in der Verdrahtungstabelle noch ein Fehler schlummert unter Tabelle "Display zum RaspPico". Darin steht "VDO" auf "3V3" ?? Ich denke der Anschluss daneben ist richtig, also "3V3-EN" Zumindest erkenne ich, dass Du diesen Pin verlötet hast. "Dann wäre ja auch "3V3" frei für die Verdrahtung zwischen Pin 1 der Verbindungsplatine und RaspPico ?! Gebe mir bitte mal eine Info dazu. Vielen Dank Schotti !

Hallo, da muss ich nochmal schauen, bin dafür nicht mehr im Thema. Es war nur der eine Fehler in der Tabelle wo die beiden Kontakte vertauscht waren. Ansonsten so verkabeln wie beschrieben.

Hello, I've been this problem in my Roland Juno G for years 😢 I've never found a solution and only it sees orange. Roland Service said that the display is out of stock. What a pity, I really like this synth, I'd like to have the opportunity to can repair it. I'm excited to search this video, I'm going to check the info. Do you think that I can have a solution? Hello Carolina, in any case it is worth to save this synth. The instructiion in this Video should help and is suitable for every Juno G. If you have the skill and the Tools you might handle it. The parts are avialable on Aliexpress.

Hallo und vielen Dank. Ich bemühe mich gerade, eine Vorlage für das Adapter Board in KiCad herzustellen um eine Kleinserie anfertigen zu lassen. Da muss ich mich aber erst noch reinfuchsen, das Programm ist Neuland für mich. Wenn ich die Zeit finde, werde ich noch ein paar Prototypen anfertigen, dann kann ich dir eine Platine zukommen lassen.

Does not matter, as far as I know the Contrast poti has different funktion...I have not tested.

In the pdf you wrote: 2. The contrast control for the display on the back of the keyboard no longer has a function. That is a mistake. On my original github and I think on the fork also, the contrast control is connected to the ADC in of the raspberry Pico and i used it to change the background colour of the display.

Hello Pieri, thanks for the tip. It's obviously clear that I've completely overlooked this. The controller has no function on my Juno, so I didn't think about it any further. But I'm sure I connected pin 2 to GP26. I'll have to check that again, maybe it's a bad connection. If I find the time next week, I will also install the prototype board in the other Juno. Maybe then I'll get more insights. Thanks again for the notice.

@@Synth-Hunter-Germany the touch display should be use different lines to control the touch. The colour change function is driven by the adc line of the RPI nano. (Gpio26 -> pin2 on the keyboad, pin1 on the keyboard 3.3v)

Super! Ich bin immer wieder erstaunt, wieviel Mühe Du Dir machst, das Optimale aus einer Reparatur herauszuholen..! Ich selber stecke immer noch in dem Problem fest, den DMA-Chip von meinem Atari 1040ste brauchbar zu machen. Beide ACSI2SD Bausätze scheitern immer wieder an Datenverlust. Vielleicht hast Du ja eine Lösung...ich finde kein Schaltbild für die 10k-Pullup-Brücke, die die Signale stabilisieren soll. Bei Dir scheint ja alles geklappt zu haben. Liebe Grüße

Para la conversión necesitas al menos esta placa. Tienes que conseguir de alguna manera el cable de cinta al Rasberry Pico. Intentaré crear un archivo Gerber desde la placa adaptadora, luego la placa se puede crear profesionalmente. Pero eso tomará tiempo

If it displays nothing but blank orange screen, that means both ribbons failed. In SynthHunter’s original display, left side and bottom right quadrants are blank (0:25), as he has the left ribbon peeled off in his last video:) If you’d like to try resuscitate your screen, you may try reheating the bonds by cloth iron at low heat (for ironing silk and synthetic fabric). Alternatively press the bonding with a flat metal strip, while heating this metal strip with heating tool (eg. cloth iron, soldering iron at suitably low heat)

6:14 That part is a pain in the nether realms. It feels like I'm gonna break the board in two. Any tip on how to remove the plastic base from the pin header in a easier manner is appreciated.

Hello Jonatan. Check you have the right USB Cable. Press and hold the programmer butten on the Pico. Plug cable into PC. Release Button. Now the Pico should apear as a drive in Explorer. Drag and drop the program file to the Pico. Thats it.

Hello Jonatan, you dont need to do the procedure to build the Flash file in the Studio Software. You can find the upload file ready on the Page. Just plug in and drop the file onto the Pico. Thats it.

Normal display has been achieved, but the actual effect is not ideal. It has a strong graininess and looks not good. I hope the author can modify the code.
